IDs and flying: you don't need any ID to fly.  The airlines are in charge of security.  If they want to let you through without an ID they can do so, it's not a law.  I know because I've done it post-9/11, post-shoe-bomber.  And no, nobody checks your passport when you leave the U.S.
[close]

Who do you fly with man? I'm on at least four flights a year, wearing a Louisiana DHS badge and my full time state agency badge (photo badges on a lanyard), and I've still had to provide my license twice, every single time, for the past 8 1/2 years (my agency contracts with Southwestern, United, and AA)... and the TSA is a Fed agency, they check IDs while you're in line right before the anal probes/x ray nudes.

Edit... I finally just Googled the damn thing...
For what it's worth, current domestic ID rules:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/acceptable_documents.shtm

And this is in reference to passports, AA won't let you depart ( http://www.aa.com/i18n/travelInformation/internationalTravel/passportInformation.jsp ), but reading the link here: http://www.dhs.gov/xnews/releases/pr_1164210249468.shtm ...doesn't say anything about departure, just coming back.

I haven't clicked on any of your links Grim and I know you're a legit guy, but I'm telling you I've flown without an ID several times -- I lost mine one time and my Passport was expired so I had nothing.  They put you through extra screening but still let you fly.

I fly internationally every month and they usually only inspect Passports when I get to the destination.  They're really bad when I'm leaving a country though (France most recent).

Not making this up.

Edit: I clicked the first link.  One of the qualifications is this: "An airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)."

That basically gives airlines discretion because I think they pay for TSA.  This is probably why I could fly without an ID.  I agree that it's scary.

Been to Japan plenty of times and the airlines have always asked for my passport when checking in.
Apparently someone wasn't doing a good job that day and let Puleo get on the flight with an expired passport knowing full well that he would be turned around the second he showed up there in customs, pretty stupid on the airlines part as well as his part for showing up for an international flight with an expired passport.
Maybe they told him he could chance it if he wanted to and he just said fuck it and tried anyway.

josh's post should be mandatory reading for anyone who skates... serious real talk there.

i thought this whole thing was solved with hawk vs hosoi in the 80s but here we are in the 10s having that same conversation about longevity and style. hensely was the perfect example to use though.

i think natas is another great example because he had an impact like ricky. when he hit everyone was skating launch ramps and doing street plants in goofy outfits. then he dropped his video parts and that was the first time ever that street skating was shown in a way that was tight, it wasn't  just imitating vert. he made everyone want to move to venice and live down the road from the pier so that you could skate from your house to the beach and skate everything in your way.

Grim works for the state of Louisiana.  He's legit.

Yeah, it's the Louisiana Governor's office of DHS and Environmental Protection, I do emergency communications or geek shit during hurricanes, floods, or any disastrous event that might occur. I'm full time for another agency, and on call with our DHS. Not law enforcement or anything like that.

Edited to add: Few, my wording may have come out with the wrong tone... I believe you, I'm just honestly surprised at the difference between your experiences and mine (and my question about passports was completely based in ignorance of how all that worked). It just *seems* like it would be something they'd look at (in the context of the security bullshit I always deal with). Craziness.

Yah, but Natas's part changed the bar in terms of 'trickery', he did what Ricky did and pioneered a ton of tricks.  Ricky did one thing in skateboarding extremely well and then talked alot about it.

I can't completely buy the 'kids these days' argument either after seeing Brandon Westgate's part.

Didn't see any Kalis hate in his posts in this thread as COTG suggests and I'm a Kalis fan, but the thing about being not-so-stoked on Shane to stoked-on Shane when he was maybe-gonna-potentially get on DC is 100% true.  So is the Brophy claim and the picnic table inside Biebel's park claim.

I also completely agree with Josh's opinion that this is going to be remembered just like the pressure flip era.  I started skating right before then and I can see it all.  Maybe I'm wrong.  People are going to have to learn to apply power and speed with some of this ridiculousness, and the problem is they can't do it with everything.

IDs and flying: you don't need any ID to fly.  The airlines are in charge of security.  If they want to let you through without an ID they can do so, it's not a law.  I know because I've done it post-9/11, post-shoe-bomber.  And no, nobody checks your passport when you leave the U.S.

Oh, and I'm going to buy a Traffic board next.  They flow a guy in my city.

can you give an example of what the fuck youre talking about? who is doing pressure flip like tricks going slow? are you talking about shane o neil? because he goes fast, does a hard, sick ass trick that looks really good. even pudwill goes fast, not that i like all his combos, but i really have no idea what you mean.

I'd wager the Japan trip left out of Newark International, that airport is a hellhole, there should be no surprise Puleo got on with an expired passport.

Now that you say that, I could see the same thing happening at New Orleans Intl. I flew out with what looked like an expired license (the renewal was a PAPER sticker on the back that had rubbed off because of skating with it in my pocket)- TSA stopped me for it trying to leave Vegas, sent me to the fucking thorough search line, but when I explained what was up and showed my badges (as I'd done to the first TSA twat) they were like "You were sent over here for this shit? Go on man, sorry for the delay."

Also, Vegas' airport... goddamn I hate that place. I hate airports in general, but on top of the chaos in there, there's the constant bloopity bloopity coming from those fucking poker machines. I spent about 8 years bartending/managing at some places with video poker and the collective sound of dozens of those things just makes me want to dig my ear's innards out with a buck knife.

I have to go to the vegas airport on an almost weekly basis (not for flying, but for taxi'ing my dad to and from Kingman AZ), and that place isn't even 1/2 as annoying and fucked up as Dulles Interntional Airport in Washington. I kinda like watching people play those slot machines while I'm waiting too. usually its their first gambling experience when they get into town, and they get so psyched when they win back half of what they put in, and then think they're on a hot streak and lose it all in front of their friends, kids, and family.

Haven't done Dulles, Reagan is really nice though... you can use transit to get into the city instead of paying out the ass for a cab.

Edit: on the flipside, my favorite is Denver because they have a really grimey smoker's lounge. I tested myself with my e-cig by hanging out there about two hours during a layover, and two years before hung out there just smoking cigs until I almost got sick (I'm a wreck during air travel). LAX used to have an outdoor smoking area but they fucking closed it... it was walled in and secure, but haters gonna hate.

that's a fair point jsoy. natas stepped up every aspect of skating while also giving it a better direction and asthetic, ricky only did the second.

ricky did some shit right and he did some shit wrong.  But he left a ricky oyola shaped hole in the wall, for better or for worse.  Not many people in life do that.
The best smoking lounge is in SLC and the worst airport is dallas/ft. worth.

Wow classic. Glad to hear the reminder everything has been done long ago, refreshing. No need to be so uptight, oh nbd whats been done, skateboarding is for fun. That is so funny using Daewon as an argument, and the year he changed up his skating was when Almost 3 came out and Skate More came out the same year, then Cheese and Crackers came out shortly after.

I actually used to get kinda annoyed when after his re-approach, that tons of people now were saying Daewon is their favorite skater. I think the first time I heard of Daewon was some old world ad of a fakie 5-0 at pier 7, something like that, then I bought round 1 when it came out. That year, the videos that were coming out were legendary, and fuck hardly anyone I remember was Daewon is one of the best skaters on the planet. But I thought he was, maybe not the best, but the dopest. Now people reference Daewon in a completely different light.

I read some of the posts in the thread before watching episode 5, and the surfers are regular comments I think you guys didn't get what he was saying. Lost is like the og deathwish type marketing shit. In surfing there are different genres of style, like old man long boarding, tow in big wave, north shore oahu, so cal, and east coast, etc. All different types of weather, and lost was the gnar core shit, that would release 4 hour long vhs surf videos, that basically would be marketed as those 4 hour porn videos.

Just bullshit storm surfing in horrible conditions, filmed really shitty, distorted as fuck punk rock music, lifestyle shots of drinking, drug use, sex, etc. Thats why he was saying the dudes at Lost are regular, hence the name lost, like you're on so many drugs brah and you're LOST, duh!?! and not like billabong, quicksilver, rusty, etc...

Skaters don't use slang anymore, they just repeat stupid catch phrases, kook, fanning out, dick riding, buttery, banging, hammer, etc.. I'm guilty of it, but people need to show some individuality, again...because that was original trend, skateboardings not a team sport, it's an individual sport.

You don't need a coach or a team, to go skateboarding. Thats why traditionally skateboarding attracted the type of people it did.

No, I hadn't. Thanks, that was a good watch. That's what skateboarding is about more than the crap he spouts in EL.

When I was in Denver a year and a half ago i could only find a smoking area connected to a restaurant, had to buy a $3 coke to smoke my cig.  And yeah, airports in general are lame.  (strange how the last 5 pages of this thread are airports and adoption v. biological parenting topics)
