Tall guy needs help landing bolts
« on: June 25, 2011, 01:26:16 PM »
So I'm 6'5.5" with big long legs (36" inseam) and I cant land bolts for the life of me! Lately I've been skating stairs and going through decks in no time, they last me as little as 10 days and if thats all I was skating probably like 3 days.

Anyone have any tips for landing bolts? when I try to bring my back foot forwards I can't keep my body straight, but when I land normally my back foot slams on the tail and cracks the deck pretty quick.

Also anyone know of any decks are longer? I think that may help me, like having a longer wheelbase.

Thanks

I'm 6'3" and I've got similar problems. Basically just practice, and really focus on keeping your feet over the bolts as you're coming towards the ground.
Look I'm not selling anything that doesn't have my jizz on it. I don't care how much is offered.

matter of fact

i've found as a tall guy with big feet that, if you just pop your tricks higher there is more time to see if you're in the board-breaking zone.  hard pop late flick, yeah... oh but you're going off stairs.  might still be useful?

I'm just saying, the better you are, the less boards you snap.

You should try that. Then you might learn a ledge trick besides noseslides.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”
I quit skating for a time due to piling out

fuck that is tall.

What size board to you ride? It seems like 9.25x33.5 or something monstrous would fit you and help with the bolts thing.

If dudes around 6' or even shorter are riding 8.25-8.5 x 32, you probably need something a lot bigger.

Yea I got a 9"x33" Creature that I'm really enjoying. Fickle Skateboards will be making big boy decks as well when they start selling their stuff. According to whoever I talked to on Facebook from them, their 8.9x33.5 rules.

Problem is most companies dont make boards that big.

you should be able to find some normal-shaped decks from the various pool-bro / old-dude companies out there. 9" or wider is easy. 33-34" might be harder, but they are definitely out there.
skull skates, sma, pool king, old man army, big mess, etc.

Lots of these old dawg companies use top-quality usa-made wood, too.

if you can't land bolts and you didn't start skating a month ago, that sounds like your deck has too short of a wheelbase imho.

Thanks!

I'm gonna see if my shop could get me something like this, I bought a 9x33 Creature that I'm really like but haven't too much to be honest. Really interested in a 9"x35" board that Skull sells.

I'm about your height, and (obvious suggestion) you should really consider riding bigger boards.

I'd pay top dollar for a Zoo York Matt Reason!

Im 6'2" size 13 shoe (sometimes 14) ride an 8 or 7.9, im usually bolts not to sound cocky its practice...but then again i do tricks i been doing since i was younger and a bit smaller so i dunno what it is i guess....just cruise around alot i do more pushing then actual skating with school an shit, but personally i believe it helps alot to just push around and like pop mini ollies off cracks in the sidewalk the ones where only your nose really comes up it builds comfort and stability even after almost 10 years i still think just riding my skateboard makes me a lil bit more comfortable each time...reverts help too, you wont believe how many kids out there can only revert one way maybe two but cant revert from switch backside or frontside little shit like that builds for bigger shit...

being tall has nothing to do with it. get a decently wide board you feel stable on and STRAIGHTEN YOUR BACK. thats some of the best advice you hear. it sounds obvious but actually make a conscious effort to make sure your back is straight and you squat your legs. people get into the habit of leaning over with their back before they pop and it throws you off balance, especially when taking fliptricks down gaps n shit.

STRAIGHTEN YOUR BACK AND SQUAT BEFORE YOU POP. YOULL BE PERFECTLY CENTER & IF YOU GOT THE FLIPTRICK DOWN YOULL LAND BOLTS
