Need advice for buying a CANON DSLR camera
« on: September 01, 2011, 02:10:57 PM »
Just started up my fall semester in College. Turns out, I need a DSLR camera.

I want one that shoots at least 12mp and also does HD video

the only issue is....

I've only got $450

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated

also, I'm a CANON fan boy

I can't really point you in a good direction for a camera that shoots HD vid, but you should check out places like http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
and http://www.adorama.com/ because they have student discount programs. I have a student discount with B&H and they do have really good deals, depending on what you're looking for. That's my 2 cents.

I'm also a Canon guy, born and raised.

No problem man. At least for B&H, they'll need to see your class schedule and a college ID or something just to prove you're a student. Also, if you're on the East coast, they ship super fast. I buy film from them all the time and I literally get it next day, free shipping, I think, with the student thing.

Isn't there some connection between megapixels and the size of the prints you can make?

yes, however if youre buying a DSLR, megapixels dont matter because if you want to do large prints you can just shoot in RAW format which is kinda like infinate pixels

seriously though, i think you got that whole "raw"-thing wrong. its just unprocessed, a larger sensor will deliver a raw-file with better resolution.

WHUT?! heck no man, raw just mean the camera doesnt apply the usual jpg/tiff compression and extra's like shapening etc.
it records the light exactly as it was at the scene this makes it easier to fix white balance etc in post production.  megapixels do matter A LITTLE, if you want to print big your gonna need some megapixels but everything around 10 and above will be fine for your needs.  the thing is sensorsize > megapixels. the bigger the sensor the more information you can record. this is why fullframe camera's (like the canon 5dmlk2) have way better low light performance than crop sensor cameras (7d, 450d , ect)

also this lens : http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-50mm-f-1.8-II-Lens-Review.aspx
this is the one lens to get when starting out

either way most people getting DSLR's arent going to be making 1Metre prints, but its good to know you can.

Personally i look for specs that are more important such as how many FPS it can shoot, and what the higher isos are like etc.
