Basically, Thelonious Monk is the man.
Some other favorites are Dexter Gordon, Bud Powell, and Wayne Shorter.
Jazz makes my day so much better.

Basically, Thelonious Monk is the man.

he's the only person who has stood out to me but i haven't really dove into the artists too much

i got into it during college working on homework in coffee shops. these days i'll usually start a pandora station based on thelonious.

Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Art Blakely, and Miles Davis (his non-jazz fusion years).

Fuck yeah, glad someone made this thread! I have been needing some new jazz to listen to. I have only been listening to it for 4 years maybe so I am not really well versed on lots of artists. I have listened to a lot of material on the ones I do know about. Here are some of my favorite songs by some of my favorite artists.

edit: I changed the video for "Manteca". I prefer the above recording.
Thelonious Monk - Evidence - Japan (1963)

This one is amazing, sort of between A love supreme and Meditations/Ascension etc. Some amazing Pharoah playing.

Some harsher Coltrane, some of the last stuff he did before his death

i love to play me some in the early morning just to set the mood for an awesome day ahead.

I dig the most the whole Impulse! catalogue. Everything is amazing: the music, the musicians, the era, the covers, the graphic design...

And besides Coltrane and Oliver Nelson, one of my favorites is Charles Mingus:

I really dig cannonball addereley, this track is awesome.

I once heard a insanely awesome version of this song on NPR, done somewhere live in France. But I could never find the recording. I also dig freddie hubbard pretty hard.

One of my favorite songs by freddie.

I saw him live at Yoshi's SF before he passed, unfortunately he was not up to par. Still awesome to have seen him.

Usually I listen when i listen jazz i listen to instrumental jazz only, or with female singers only.....
there's some stuff in this thread i know, but thankfully, also some new stuff to discover.

I actually don't give a shit about that whole jazzsinging-sinatra-kinda-stuff, with the big bands and all....But this song is magic, and this singer, damn, i love his voice, like evry word hold a lifetime or whatever....i'm taken over by the song.

There's another version with only Monk, which also is out of this world (no pun)
