How did the no pads/no helmet trend start?
« on: February 11, 2012, 11:11:05 AM »
No one would have skated 9-12 foot high bowls/ramps in the 80s without being fully padded up, yet if you watch something like Tent City, there is not a pad or helmet in the whole video.

When and how did skaters say "fuck it" to elbow/knee/head protection?

I think skaters started coming from street backgrounds and just felt awkward in pads.  I feel so stiff on the rare occasion I get padded up.  A park I grew up skating a lot required knee/elbow/helmet on the street course.  I always felt like I couldn't even ollie when I went there.  It is pretty rad watch someone learn a tough trick on tranny who knows how to knee slide properly.  They can go for it so much harder than someone who has to reley on running out every attempt.

People figured out that pads condition you to fall, and landing your tricks feels better than slamming.

That's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure anyone wants to fall even with pads. Couldn't you also say that pads reduce risk, so guys push their abilities more and improve faster?

Being able to ride big tranny without pads shows such a crazy amount of confidence in your skating.  That's what i think is most impressive.

the only real difference with skating big tranny with pads is that you can hold on a little longer and skating without pads has such a better feeling, it is way more dangerous skating without pads but for the most part people who skate padless dont think of these's dangers, its just about having that feeling of trusting your self and your skating. But in the contest world padless skating can be frowned upon because its "breaking the rules" it seems like the majority of people would rather see people go a foot or two higher with pads then without. But the core skaters really are the ones who can appreciate padless skating.

Also, some bowls and pools aren't even conducive to knee sliding in the first place if your pads are just going to slide back to reveal your exposed knees to the abrasive surface.  I don't think anyone can rely on knee sliding some place like Pizzey.

I just figure that street skating weeded out pads because it's goofy as fuck to skate street spots fully padded. The next explosion of parks hit and pads didn't come back with it.  It's a little crazy to see dudes like Grant Taylor and Ben Raybourn going as big as they do sans pads but skill is always the best measure of safety.

I feel like a complete shithead when I knock my knee/elbow really hard and end up dealing with an injury that I am pretty sure wouldn't have even happened if I had pads on. Just keeps you honest I suppose.

If you're referring to Grant, Raven, etc. skating a vert ramp or a pool padless, they're not trying nollie 360 heels and shit, they're just grinding and doing airs ("just"), also, it looks like they run down the tranny easily, seems like an easy out most of the time.  If you got bad knees and can't run out of tricks down the wall, then yeah, pad up and kneeslide.
example. i cant cast a spelll or love potion on a girl and she falls total in love for me
but i can show a girl my tv youtube clip on my or her phone. but there's a difference ok

No one wants to look likea football player all padded up and shit, i mean surfers don't wear life jackets or floaties right? Why don't skaters all wear like sweat pants and athletic wear instead of tight jeans?

i'd rather skate at my level and skate small tranny than wear pads so i can skate a 10 foot concrete bowl. i'd guess the new crop of pros are doing the same but just at a much higher level.

What like you mean if you're fat and out of shape?

Skating padless feels great, but when age comes i may succumb unwillingly.

Actually if you're horribly overweight and you try to knee slide and do it wrong, you could end up shattering your knee caps.  Those things weren't meant to withstand that much weight (knees or kneepads).

Big wave surfers will often times wear helmets.

It isn't I trend
More of a statement that you don't give a fuck about the consequences of slamming no pads. Like when cardiel shredded shit with vert pros back in the day
Imagine the vert pros now days pulling j720 kickflip indys no pads across the mega.
You'd be like damn that dude don't give a fuck about his shit

Seems more likely to be pad wearing if the ramp is wood/masonite/skatelite as opposed to concrete.  Maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see.

No I just mean bad knees.  I watched a fit twenty year old with existing knee problems run out of a crailslide on a vert ramp, and his shit just blew up.
