Is Kook really an insult?
« on: June 30, 2012, 10:04:18 AM »
I always thought it just meant a weird person, and frankly I prefer kinda weird people at least it means they are somewhat creative and think outside of the box. People who sincerely use Kook as an insult tend to to have in my experience the IQ's of trash cans, just skateboarders going with the flow always afraid of radical coherent thoughts that try to destroy the status quo anyways. People who are far too self conscious and concerned with always appearing "cool" to their peers. What do you guys think is being a Kook really an insult?
This kinda sums up my point

Dave Carnie once wrote about posers (TSM 2006/7), loving the term kook so much better. The subtopic of that article talked about a shirt his friend made which said "I dont skate, Im just a kook" around Independet cross. Dave is quite intelligent fucker so listen to him. "Pun" regarding listen-to-shirts might have been intended.

PS: I for one hate that stupid term even more. This is what Maddox has to say about its use: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=puns

In the general population, kook means weird, off-beat type person.
In the surf population its meant a shit talker who doesn't back his claims up on the water for a while, and then came to mean generally lame person. Then it spread into skate language.
In the end, words are collections of sounds created by people that are coded with a meaning. Are any words really insults? Should we be offended by any individual word out of context? Probably not, but there are many examples of times we are.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”
I quit skating for a time due to piling out

Good point Mr Reagan, Ive witnessed "skater" being used as an insult. Kinda funny, if somebody would use my nationality in a dimeening way id give less of a fuck then "skater". Way more proud of being a skater than a slave to an imaginary drawned lines on our planet.

"that guy? oh that guys a fucking kook" that always seemed to me like the adult version of "poser". Now if you got called that shit in middle school, it fucking stung.
One of my favorite fights i witnessed in middle school, two dudes, neither of which skated were arguing over skateboarding video games. i think it was over Mtv Skateboarding and possibly thps1, but one dude said Mtv skateboarding was for posers, and they got into this gnarly slap fight. i wanna say a teacher caught a hand in the crossfire.

Kook can be a negative, a positive, or just a neutral default. Like this guy... definitely a kook, but I bet he'd be an OK next door neighbor.

Yeah, but if he was my neighbor I'd change his decal to say, "I'm a fingerbanger".

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.
