Portland, OR
« on: July 24, 2012, 10:50:57 AM »
Transferring to Portland State (I think) next year.  Campus is located downtown (west of river) and if memory serves me correctly its not far from Burnside, and Brooklyn Street DIY spot.

Anyways I may sell my car before I move out there.  How is public transit?  Or is driving not bad?

Wondering what the skate scene is like too

Yep, not far at all.

Public transit is good, or just ride your bike everywhere.  Pretty bike friendly town.

Everyone pretty much skates in Portland, or it seems like that.  Winter will suck.  Only show in town is pretty much Commonwealth, which is good, but it's not as fun as the old DOS.  I heard Pharmacy may be opening their shop back up, so hopefully they can get back on their feet and get an indoor going again.

Is winter that bad?  I was hoping to at least be able to skate burnside or an indoor park a couple times a week during winter.

I should pick up a bike while I'm out there.  Or I'll put my 29"er back together.

It sucks that Department went under.  I remember reading an article about it being a great park in a Transworld a few years ago.

You can usually skate burnside in the winter. There will be certain parts covered with water depending on which direction the wind is blowing. It's usually not completely shut down though. There are also a lot of little covered private spots that you just have to meet people to get access to.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

The transition at Commonwealth looks pretty fun.

Considering getting a year long bus pass too.

When I lived there you could only do month to month bus passes. If they do year long though then get on it. The tri met is really extensive.

Small skater owned shop on Morrison on the East side.  Cal Skate is a great shop, too.  Huge selection and Paul Fujita is a great guy.  Exit is in NW. Good shoe selection, but kind of boutiquey.  Rip City on Sandy is a big longboard shop with a good selection of regular skate stuff too. There's other shops around, but I usually just went to Cal Skate.
