Bumping in case anyone checks this thread. I made a zine if anyone is down to trade.

I finished up my first photo zine not too long ago. Its 24 pages + cover, 5.5x8.5", full bleed, laser printed, hand cut and stapled, all that great stuff. Edition of 10. If anyone is interested in one, I'd be down to trade for zines, prints, drawings, or anything else you guys make. I have a few left, so if you're interested pm me your address and I'll drop one in the mail for you.

How do you guys get the layout for your zines?
is it something done in photoshop/illustrator?

I have no idea how to use either of those things, I can barely use MS Paint.

I'm thinking of making a rough fold and cut zine (2x8 panel a3 size paper) and stapling them together.
laying out the paper, pasting the images on and then photocopying that however many times feels necessary

it'll probably be super sketchy but we will see how it turns out.

hopefully you guys can help out so I can make it better

I just messed around to see what worked and what didn't. Looked at older Thrashers, Transworlds, and porn mags to get some ideas. A lot of cut and paste but the beauty of it is u can do whatever the hell u desire.

Was in the middle of making one (20 pages done) two years ago n  had my kid. Since then, the project has been at a standstill on account of I don't skate with anybody anymore and my bike rides are severely limited (Used to just run into people sessioning spots, ask permission, then take pictures). Shit, I got a pic of Tom K's first Zero ad just riding along the beach trail before work, Even got a Phanner photo a year before he was in any mags or videos.

Looked through whats done recently and decided to do it more like a skate/bike riding thing. Planning a ride from Long Beach to Oceanside (The Orange County ride) soon and see how things work out.

Glad to see this bumped. Just the other day I found an old skate zine I made for college, and while it was fun to make the content was very rushed and suited to appeal to a class rather than a wide skate audience. Been trying to brainstorm what kinda stuff I would write about if I were to make another.

Ideally you want to use a page layout program like indesign. I'd discourage anyone from using photoshop because that just seems like a nightmare. Illustrator would suffice, but only if you don't have access to indesign.

The thing with zines is they can be as rough or as polished as you want. you could take a few sheets of 11x17" paper, fold them into a book, then take prints of whatever you want as your content and tape or glue them to the pages to make a master copy, then photocopy that a bunch of times. It might take some trial and error, but you could do that without even opening a design program. For something more polished, you definitely want to use indesign or something similar. Set up your document with a page count in a multiple of 4, make sure you have facing pages turned on, decided weather or not you want your content to bleed (more work and possible more expensive if you do) and make sure you add at least a .25" bleed to your document. Then fill the pages with content and print using the print booklet feature. Make sure you select to have your crop marks and bleed marks printing and know that you need to print on a larger size sheet if you're going to be cutting it down. Then it's just scoring the pages down the center so they fold easier, cutting them out, then binding the book together.

If anyone needs more help, shoot me a PM.

Ah cool to see this thread, I just started work on a zine of my own. I did a quick sort of mock-up one just by hand on some 8"x11" paper folded over into a booklet. All hand drawn and written. I'd like to make a nice glossy one sooner rather than later, I need to look into costs etc. though. I have a feeling I'm going to lose money in the long run, but whatever I suppose. ART AIN'T ABOUT THE MONEY MAN.

Haven't put out a zine in awhile. For couple of issues, I actually had them profesionally printed but I really prefer the hand cut and paste and photo copy approach these days.

http://foulweather.blogspot.com

I'm down to trade. I' ve got copies of issues 2,3,4 of my zine foulweather. My last issue had a skate related story in it and my attempt at a horror short story... plus some other crap...

Thinking of putting out a new issue with my collage efforts and maybe some bad poetry...

Thanks to you guys for Inspiring me to do a zine . Reading your comments and seeing what you did was the push I needed . Someone recommended indesign and I totally forgot my friend marky is a graphic designer so he was able to do the layout in no time . I Took the photos . Pretty stoked how my 1st issue came out . Definitely a few things I need to add/fix . I’m down to trade .

Thanks JG Buttonhole!

I received a couple of copies of Planet Dearth. You guys should check it out. Great little insight into a subculture I've been curious about since I moved to this country. And a little tip on how to cure baldness. I'm kind of afraid to hop trains and put strange concoctions on my thinning hair but I'll gladly read about both.

So I have an idea for a zine and I have a few things I want to get at and I need you guy's help, this is what I got so far

For as many goddamned years I have put into this kvlt piece of wood with wheels, I have few bones to pick. I am here to let you motherfuckers know a few things. For everything we do it has been been bitten off by evil corporate succubus and silver tongued butthole lickers.  Music Fashion Chic couture

Hate the idea of your style being stolen? Be better then than them, we experienced it already throughout the early to late 90’s. When being punk wasn’t cool and just looked lazy to upgrading out kits with fitted Baseball hats, Polo, khakis, and cargo pant’s when that started becoming lame and getting used by your atypical bro douchebag we switched it up again. Ali Boulala Jim Greco were at the forefront of switching it up, although with questionable identities and sidepipe viewing tight pants like the Krew AR’s.

Even the worst parts of skating’s questionable fashion sense we’ve held true to our core beliefs.

Which leads me to this rant about how not to blow it when finding your identity in the skate scene, if you can’t make it with talent at least slow your roll and listen up to the older dudes on SLAP. Yes they’re a bunch of grumpy tinfoil hat wearing Alex Jones which will take a rumor and make an entire thread about a post or a team member being let go. However it is good to understand that skating and style are what speaks most of a person, the rest is bullshit, have a whack style or have some lame YouTube* Vlog like Revive/Braille you will be laughed at.  The best and most humble skaters are the ones who don’t speak much and let their actions speak for them.

*The only exceptions to YouTube is Ben Degros and those that are building DIY projects for everyone to use and respect

No vibing, No outsiders, No elitists, No kooks, this is our scene and not something to rip off by your shitty Instagram/Etsy social media.

i don't understand what you're asking for help with. but my suggestion is learn indesign, how image sizing/printing works, then get the content. unless you're trying to make something in Microsoft word, which might help given your typos in that post.

but if youre serious, i know there are little things you may come across like setting up page bleeds, file types and color spaces that are easy to forget but will make things come out exactly how you want in print. so feel free to ask specifics cause making zines is fun and really cool to be able to hand out to friends or sell to people.

Well honestly what I want to do with this particular zine is I am going to size it up and print it out and photocopy much like Aaron Cometbus. Half writing and cut and pasting and photocopying.

I just was asking for points to bring up in my rant of bullshit as an opener, does it come off as too preachy or condescending?  I want this to be a something with you guy's input kinda more angrier version of Lowcard but with shows shops to go to, record reviews, what is rad and and what is dogshit, not going to be lie I want it to piss someone off.

I think Zines are awesome and FMS does a great job on East Coast Overdose. Definitely take his advice on the subject. Including using Microsoft Word for spell check. Seriously dude say “Not going to be lie” out loud.

Also if its your first Zine it’ll probably only be circulated through your circle of friends so you can just save time and piss one of your friends off the normal way. Save a tree.

I have done punk zines in the past, I want to ask for others opinions on certain issues. right now I am writing how not to blow it at a demo or a meet and greet.

When at a demo or contest try to be observant and courteous they came to skate with you/for you. also no one wants a hometown hero trying to show off.

If you have questions or want to get to know the people of your favorite teams or whatever sit back and just watch listen and it comes your time to shine don't drop names as that makes you look like a dickhead try to be yourself and for fucks sake don't ask them for their board.

Are interactive .pdfs still zines?
Is it possible to have copy next to embedded videos thru InDesign?
Maybe a more suitable file format?

My friend at Vice told me it takes one acre of rainforest to generate a .pdf :’(

You’re right though, I always consider a Zine as a tangible item but it can most definitely be a file which saves money/time and has the potential to reach a larger audience.

I guess I just feel like a Zine should be made to be circulated through a local scene. If it makes its way somewhere else then thats awesome but if your doing it publically and hoping for a broad audience its more of a “Blog” in my opinion.

Started out doing a hardcore punk zine in 1999 called "Pulling Punches" for about a year and a half.
Then shifted focus to more comics/sci-fi/horror movies and a name change to "Too Cool For School" and that went for about 12 issues.

Currently working on a few zines, have one called "5 Questions for 5" that has interviews with Neckface, Steve Olson and others (hit me up for a free copy).

I think a zine can really be delivered in any way (digital or otherwise), one of my zines was released in an engraved bottle and written on a typewriter. I once saw a dude do zines on floppy disks and hand them out.

Everyone should make zines, it's so fucking easy.
A4 back to back, fold in half and staple...

EDIT: I do all my zines cut and paste, so literally print out screenshots of the interview and then cut and paste them straight onto paper (literally with sellotape), take them to officeworks and get them printed there.
