Props to the Nuge and Shimizu, if you cant make fun of yourself who can you make fun of.

i appreciate their sense of humor, but when it goes past an inside joke and into mainstream consumption (board and shirt for sale) they should prepare for a backlash. call any asian over the age of 40 a "gook" to their face and see what kind of reaction you get. i seriously doubt they will be stoked. yes big brother and rocco pushed the envelope the same way, some of that stuff was almost 20 years ago. it's different times now. none of that stuff would fly now, so you can't even make that comparison. they term "racism" gets thrown around alot. i don't think they are a racist company. culturally intensive and lacking judgement is more like it. but then again this is a company of run by recovering addicts who sell a glorified image of party lifestyle.

who really gives a shit what's considered acceptable. plenty of things that are considered acceptable by some people are considered offensive by others.

boner pretty much nailed it earlier in this thread.

i could see people getting offended by a form of racism generated from hate but it seems that isnt the case, the reason that racist slurs such a big deal is because people make that way, if you ignore someone calling you something you basically take away all its power.

the incensitive type of racism will stop mattering the exact moment that people stop caring about the opinions of strangers.

Well what gets me is whether you find it funny or racist/insensitive I think it goes to show how dumb these guys are because they're putting this product out to sell and I can't see anyone on either side of the argument buying this shit which translates to no profit.

i wasn't trying to make that point but i mean yeah, i do think it's fine if one asian dude wants to call another asian dude gook, jap, or whatever. that doesn't bother me. it bothers me that baker put this dumb fucking shirt out and the majority of the people who will buy it and wear it are white.

and sleazy, maybe you should just shut the fuck up about race because it's clear you don't know what you're talking about.

Ive never heard the word "gook" before.
Here is its origin, an American near genocide in the Phillipines:
http://www.loompanics.com/Articles/DestroyAllGooGoos.htm

Watch people call me overly sensitive for posting a simple fact. Its really funny because some ignorant dumbasses already have, and I have yet to even comment on the shirt at all. Some people are overly sensitive about me calling out racism...hahaha

Oh, and  people telling people what actions and slurs they can and can't be offended by? Fuck you, not your role. People have the right to offend and to be offended. I forgot that the only type of racism we are allowed to be offended by is affirmative action or when people point out that Americans owned slaves.  Some white people are embarassing sometimes.

^ Yeah, fuck gay people's civil rights! People are too sensitive these days, with their demands of equal protection under the law! Poor Chik Fil A, all they did was donate millions of dollars to oppress others when they didn't have to, they are totally the victims!
Who the fuck tolld people its okay to boycott Chik Fil A! Making decisions in a free market about where we want to spend our own money is so unamerican... They need to pass a law that forces people to go buy food at Chik Fil A to stop these socialists who believe in a free market!
Seriously, are you that fucking stupid that you somehow think that we must tolerate intolerance and oppression? Whatever happened to fighting back against oppression? Or do you only do that when its a "government conspiracy" to take our guns and bibles?

The whole Chick Fil A thing has shown the new racist's mantra is clear as day- "telling me to stop oppressing others is intolerance, and is just as bad as me wanting to deny rights to an entire class or people"

Everytime I hear that, I want to punch the fucking idiot who said that in the face, and if he tries to do anything back say something like "Whatever happened to non-violence?"
Its that stupid.

Why do you buy into the conspiratorial right's BULLSHIT so willngly? You say you are skeptical of mainstream news, that's fine, but why the FUCK do you buy such stupid lines of reasoning from the hard right without ever questioning them?

First of all Gipper, I have to admit I'm biased on the whole Chickfila thing. But you know I'm a libertarian so I believe that everyone should have equal rights and those rights should be protected under law. So I don't know where you're assuming that I think people shouldn't be able to boycott and use the free market. I personally think its a distraction and a waste of time on their part, which I'll get in to. I mean come on though with all that is going on in the country and the world, this is news? An owner of a Christian company that is closed on Sundays was asked what his position on gay marriage was and people act surprised at his response? His beliefs are his right. Chickfila doesn't refuse service to gays or anyone for that matter, in fact I know gays who work for Chickfila. Not to mention Chickfila's are a francaise, so the owner of each store doesn't share the same views as the president of the company. Eitherway he's not infringing on anyone's rights, he's simply giving his honest answer to a question, which probably wasn't the smartest business move, but then again neither is being closed on Sundays. They also didn't donate millions of dollars to oppress anyone, I don't know where you got that bullshit info from, did you read into the companies they donate to? One of them is owned by them and its a marriage counselling group, and the other 2 were family groups. Most likely these groups share the same views as the president of Chickfila but they aren't oppressing anyone, they are Christian though so that should be obvious. Anyway if people don't like their views  and wish to boycott them then they can choose not to eat there that's perfectly fine and makes sense, even protesting is fine, but it's a waste of time demagoguing a fast food chain when their rights are already being infringed in the majority of states in this country, why don't they get organized and protest something that will actually gain them something? Because they are completely manipulated by the media, the media plays groups and classes like a fucking violin. Gays fell into this media trap hard, now they are wasting their time with another distraction, chances are the guy who owns the Chickfila down the street from them doesn't share the same beliefs as the president of the company but they'll sure waste their time and effort on him, while idiot politicians who you probably love want to try to block the company from opening a business in their city because of their religious beliefs and first amendment right. At any rate I don't agree with either side, I just get frustrated watching people fall into media traps and distractions over words someone said, and even though I may not agree with them they certainly have a right to say them. Then again looks like I fell into the trap too because I'm on here talking about it. Anyway I wouldn't say Chickfila, they are doing record numbers right now. But to be clear I'm not saying "fuck anyone's civil rights" no one is taking civil rights away here, the sad fact is the rights in question don't even exist in the majority of the country.

Anyway Gipper, you and I agree on this issue I believe, I'm just not as sensitive about the political correctness aspect.

Family research council isn't just a family group, and they gave large donations to them:
http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-files/groups/family-research-council

I also think religion is used as an excuse for oppression. Anti-gay views are not central at all to Christian dogma, but people who are anti-gay tend to use the religious angle to justify their views. The same thing was done for slavery and the Indian genocide. Today nobody would ever support killing off non-believers or enslaving people because it is central to their beliefs.
You can disagree with the boycott, but its not an infringement on free speech to conduct it.

You can probably get away with wearing that shirt if you're Vietnamese or Filipino.   To be honest, I always thought it was just a derogatory term toward the former but apparently it encompasses Filipino and Korean people as well.

The term was originally a slur the U.S. used for Filipinos  in the Phillipines war, and when the U.S. went to Vietnam they used the same slur, I'm pretty sure it was a carry over from one war to the other.

http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-files/groups/family-research-council
They've also donated large amounts to other groups who believe that gay is a "curable disease", and who think that it can be healed.

Chick-Fil-A has the right to say whatever they want, I don't think anyone is really denying that. It's just that everyone else has the right to point out that their views are bigoted, hateful, and makes them look like fucking assholes.

I am chinese but i have no sense of asian pride or shame. I judge people on a case by case basis regardless of race. there are horrible people of all races. I dont really care about my ancestors and what they've been through (building railroads were fucked but they are not me, so why would i care). I know its jacked to think this way but oh well.

You guys are way off. If a white dude were to wear a shirt that said "NIGGERS," would it be okay for him to say "don't get all bent out of shape" when people get pissed off about it? If something pisses you off, there's no problem in coming out and saying it pisses you off. If you don't, the white dude who wears the "NIGGERS" tee will wander around thinking there's no problem with him wearing it, make racist jokes with his buddies, and continue to belittle people and encourage other people to do it too, intentionally or not. If you're pissed off about something, sitting back and letting it happen is not going to help anything out.

By the way, dear white people, it's not up to you to determine what is offensive to other people.

To everyone who is talking about buying this shirt, be warned not everyone is going to get the "joke" and find it "funny". People in the skateboard community may get it, but I can imagine a white dude (or anyone non-Asian) walking down the street with the word "gook" on his shirt may not go over very well in certain areas. So be ready to throw down if necessary. I am a firm believer in the first amendment. Baker has the right to make these shirts and you have the right to wear them, just be prepared for the consequences of your actions.

You guys are way off. If a white dude were to wear a shirt that said "NIGGERS," would it be okay for him to say "don't get all bent out of shape" when people get pissed off about it? By the way, dear white people, it's not up to you to determine what is offensive to other people.

I feel like some people use the "laughing at yourself" bit as an excuse for not being able to stick up for themselves.
This shirt isn't that bad though, I've seen way worse self-depreciation (for the sake of acting "chill") when asian kids made fun of.
I don't know what it is with some people, but they think that being angry about something is somehow bad : "LOL UMAD?"

Everyone in this topic is missing the point.

Baker markets their shit to kids aged 11-17 and they're marketing racism to kids.  Yeah, most of us on here get it
and understand self-depreciation and realize that it is meant to be a joke.  However, kids are generally dumb as fuck and buy into stupid
shit and this is Baker making racism "cool" and picking on a seem ingly weak target (Asians).  So what they consider to be a harmless joke, turns into kids at the skatepark calling the asian a "fucking Gook" and thinking its funny right, because it is just a joke....

How anyone could support companies like Baker and Deathwish is beyond me...they are beyond the worst.   If they had any balls they'd  put Antwuan and Terry on a shirt on call it The Niggers of Hazzard....that should be fine, right?

Just kidding, but that's exactly what I was thinking when I saw this. It's not 'taking the word back' if a random white kid with a beiber cut, lazy beanie and skinny jeans rocks it, completely ignorant to what the word means and where it came from.

Said the same thing in a conversation about this shirt today. Yea its funny or making fun of yourself or whatever, but I think everyone can agree that The Niggers of Hazzard shirt would not be ok, yet this one exists. Obviously racism towards blacks is worse than towards asians but from what I understand gook has some pretty bad history as a slur. As an asian the shirt doesnt offend me, and its kinda funny but I'm not gonna say I wouldnt be bummed if kids start referring to me as a "gook". And I'm sure that people outside of the skate community will not get the joke, so unless you plan on only being around people that know about Nuge and Baker, good luck.
