not a bad idea...

Just wondering though, do glow in the dark materials ever "run out of juice" kinda like rechargeable batteries?
well I suppose they could do a fresh paint job but it would seem like a bitch to do haha

well yeah that's what I'm assuming, but can it be solar activated forever?  That's why I brought up rechargable batteries, eventually you gotta replace them.

Thats not an island

quite right, it's a peninsula. but i think that pointing that out completely misses the original intent of the thread, which was to discuss the pros/cons of a luminous skatepark. Personally, I think it's a great idea and it's probably cheaper/more sustainable than having big lights. Furthermore, lights can be turned off by the city to end the session, whereas the glow in the dark cannot be deactivated.

this made me giggle.

to the poster asking about the life of the paint: a glow in the dark paint will last the same as any other paint. it will fade over time like other paints, but by no means would "run out of glow"

It's just glow in the dark paint, can be done to anything, and it's a gimmick. Coming to a tf near you.

What's really more interesting is the form of it.  It was designed by architects that don't skate and it sits on the grounds of a museum, so it has some funky features.  There are tunnels a few weird bumps and bits of transition.

The paint is really the least cool thing about it, but every idiot likes shiny and glowy. So the architects must have at some point just said, eh whatever, give the masses what they want.

if it acts like any other glow in the dark product it gets recharged by direct light. so when the sun is beaming on it all day it should glow good during night, and yeah a fresh paint job will help

That's what I was thinking this whole time. Not saying it is really that well designed, but very interesting. I would love to (try) to skate that shit.

i don't think it would be that great to skate at night, you would still need lights set up. it would be too dark, and the glow could possibly even be annoying aswell. although it will be cool to see someone skating it at night and i think it looks rad.

Exactly what I was thinking.
I think it would be a good idea to put those solar powered garden lights in parks.
Obviously they should be a little bigger but it would save lots of money and energy.
I dont recall ever putting on anything Southpole in my life.

that is exactly what our local park needs. then we could skate there when ther are no scooter kids because it would be past their bed times
