Don't give a shit what happens to Jeremy Scott, honestly

But it'd be cool to see the Philips see money going their way ;D

Also love you Brink for bashing Target and UO

[close]

UO is wack as fuck.
[close]

Word. The store has zero coherence, the whole store is just a rip off of something.

And full of people who think they are clever for selling/buying ironic books about bacon or mustaches ...

It's not about UO, but I feel like this applies somewhat:

Santa Cruz just posted this on their Facebook page:

Quote
Expand Quote
We know there is a lot of controversy regarding fashion designers Jeremy Scott's new Winter collection in regards to the iconic Phillips art work similarities. We are aware and our CEO issued this statement......

""We had never heard of Jeremy Scott until it was brought to our attention," said Robert A. Denike, CEO and President, NHS, Inc./Santa Cruz Skateboards.

"This is not a collaboration or under license, nor did we or the Phillips family approve the use of this artwork on his apparel designs in any way.

"It's obvious to us, the Phillips family, the fans of Jim Phillips Sr. and Jimbo Phillips, and fans of the brand Santa Cruz Skateboards, as well as many in the global skateboard and skate art community that there is clear and obvious infringement by Mr. Scott. We are discussing this with our legal team to determine our next steps.

"These two artists and this brand are iconic. Any true fan of skateboarding will tell you how the Phillips artwork style, this brand and the activity of skateboarding has positively influenced their lives.

"It may just be artwork to Mr. Scott, to be used and thrown away by next season, but these artists and brand mean a lot to many people around the world. And by the looks of the outcry on social media, skateboarders and non-skater's alike are angry to have two of their most favored artists and one of the original true skateboard brands violated in such a way.

"I hope that Mr. Scott sees that his actions have hurt and affected many people, including the Phillips family, and that he has also severely damaged his own reputation. It is not too late for him to do the right thing, as an artist and creative person, and fix his error in judgement."

The emboldened text made me very happy.

What I'm curious about it whom might have taken the gig to re-illustrate this stuff. Maybe it's done in house?

Brink, why did you do that fashion thing with the girl with regular glasses and the overly whited asian? They were ridiculous. The fashion girl didn't seem to realise Jim and Jimbo were 2 people. At the same time she's crapping on like an authority. All her talk about Powell and being punk. Holy fuck.  ???

The asian, Mary, who is a long time friend and my old editor from Missbehave magazine, who gave me MANY opportunities to interview celebrities outside of skating ... like Kat Von D, Regina Spektor, Amber Heard, Lizzy Caplan and Jena Malone, to name a few ... asked me to.

When friends need you, you step up.

And because it was an opportunity to speak on behalf of skateboarding and do my part to stick it to this Jeremy Scott douche ... as well as share the video with our industry and fuel the fire against Jeremy Scott. You can't expect EVERYONE in the world to know EVERYTHING about skateboarding. You don't either. And there was a time when you didn't know who Jim and Jimbo were either.

The thing is, I'd rather take the opportunity to have skating's back ... and also educate non skaters at the same time, than to worry about people judging me for doing a video with some fashion chicks who aren't "core" skaters. They aren't calming to be, but Julianna, in the glasses, is one of the people who stepped up and had our backs on SPIN magazine's site. That's huge.

If you watch the video, you'll see she admitted to thinking it was the Bones Brigade stuff ... the point isn't about her NOT knowing it was Jim Phillips / Santa Cruz are exactly, but that it was SUCH AN OBVIOUS RIPOFF that even her, with her limited knowledge of skateboarding was able to place it as something skate-related.

She's not crapping on anything or anyone but Jeremy Scott. She has our backs on this one. Just like I stepped in when asked 'cuz I'll have skating's back until the day I die. I'd hope, if you were asked to defend skating and someone as legendary as Jim/Jimbo and Santa Cruz, that' you'd step to the plate too, no matter WHO you would be in a video with doing it. Watch it again ... with less negative, knee -jerk-reactionary eyes ...

Additionally, and this is a little career advice from me to you ... when someone like MTV, (who can open serious doors for you down the line) asks you to participate in something regarding defending skateboarding, and you don't have to look like a kook or sell your soul to do so ... do it.

Got me? Don't be bummed on the chicks 'cuz of how they look or what details they don't know about skating, be stoked they called this out and asked a skater to participate.

Don't take this as me coming at you ... it's all good. Thanks for asking.

Brink

It wasn't really just they way they look. More just their whole approach was lightweight and pretty shallow.

It was only a few months ago that I was aware of Jim/Jimbo being two separate people, but then I'm not going on a webcast to defend them. You'd have thought she might have googled his name? That isn't about being a hardcore skate rat, it is about looking a little sincere. Do you really care that much about an artist's work being copied, when you don't actually know you're talking about two people?

If you are stepping in to represent skateboarding good for you. Their motives didn't really seem so clear. More like they were playing cool and didn't really care that much about the artwork being appropriated, more calling out a designer. A little storm in the fashion world teacup.

MTV and my work are worlds apart. Luckily, I don't have to worry about selling my soul too much...

All your other stuff is really solid, this just made me cringe a bit.

I suppose one could argue that fashion, skateboarding and forums are pretty lightweight and shallow too ... I love skating to death, its heavy for me ... but when I speak with a lot of people who don't skate, they view some of what I say as trite. And I get it.

And maybe you aren't going on a webcast, but you are going on a forum and posting about things you aren't entirely knowledgeable of ... that being what you are saying about a couple of women you don't know and so on. It's really the same thing.

These women aren't actresses. Better they don't "look sincere," as you say, but are sincere ... rather than them faking sincerity, right? They were actually being real and trying not to pretend they knew more than they did.

I see a lot of women ... and men, faking it so hard to be involved and make money off our industry on a daily basis. It makes me sick. One of the few things I loathe about working in skate actually.

One more thing ... this wasn't a planned out thing. I found out about an hour or so before we did this that they wanted me involved. Same for the girl with the glasses ... i can see how the time to totally prepare wasn't an option. I could also see how someone, who hasn't spent their life in skateboarding, might innocently confuse Jim and Jimbo in this instance.

I thank you for your compliments on my other work. I don't think you HAVE TO agree with me or like everything I do. But I am trying to make you see that everyone involved in this video, core skaters or not, had good intentions and had skateboarding's back in this case, otherwise I wouldn't have been involved, while also explaining that some smaller details about how they looked or a few errors they made don't really detract from the bigger picture of art theft.

Be happy that this whole thing exploded outside of just skateboarding ... and from now on, may set an example and prevent others from jacking more stuff in the future.

And yes ... I can totally see how this is cringe-worthy too. God I wish I was better on camera. But I'm not. I'm more of a behind-the-scenes writer and producer type dude.

Have a good one my friend,

Brink

I can see your point, but it is just how they came off to me that grated.

I'm living on a small island off HK at the mo. So after work, I'm usually having a few brews and shooting the shit on the net.

Usually Weekend Buzz and Free Lunch are a good watch to drink to. This fashion one, not so much!

Keep up the good work.

Jeremy Scott is Jason Dills favorite fashion designer, he said in an old Skateboarder interview.  Donald Dill, fag for life.

Jimbo Philips couldn't even win in court, the graphic has been changed enough.  Palace does the Chanel shirts, Supreme the LV, Jeremy Scott does the Jim Philips, at most he'll get a cease and desist.

Those cunts were dumb as shit. Glasses couldn't stop saying "like" for every other word.

I dont agree, maybe if he had ripped off 1 design he might have got away with it but to use quite a few blatant rippoffs and in the exact same colorway is just stupid. does this shit go on sale in shops or was it just for a show cos if they making cash off of this then some money gotta get paid to the artists.

I guess my complaint is that outside of being a complete and utter ripoff from a single source book, it's absolutely awful.  Not one thing in that collection would I give a second look at unless I were trying to self induce vomiting or come up with a third round of ridicule.  He stole icons and parodied them.  That doesn't fly in skateboarding.  Or are we not allowed to criticize because we are not in "high fashion"?  That may be like one of them saying Tpuds has a great skate style.  To which I would reply, "No, no he doesn't.  Get the fuck out of here, what do you know".

Here is a personal criticism Brink, and I know it was just a web thing with no notice.  But somewhere around the 12:20 mark you said "like" almost 20 times in a 45 second span.  Verbalized pauses, ouch.  Leave those for the 8th grade girls.  You are better than that, even if you don't think you are very good on camera.  I know it's not easy.

Keep up the good work, and thanks for having skateboarding's back.  Gnars to you.

http://www.highsnobiety.com/2013/09/03/nhs-santa-cruz-skateboards-jimbo-jim-phillips-dispute-fashion-designer-jeremy-scott/

If you don't want to read the whole thing, this paragraph sums it up:

Scott issued the following statement: ?I regret that certain pieces of my February 2013 Fall Winter fashion line incorporated imagery that was similar to images owned by NHS and Messrs. Phillips. I now recognize my mistake and out of respect to their work and their rights, the clothing and handbags at issue will not be produced or distributed.? Bob Denike on the settlement: ?We have to protect our intellectual property and trademarks, copyrights and brands and we have to stand behind our artists and skateboarders. Jeremy Scott admits to what he did and agreed to have all the items retrieved and destroyed. He states that in a press release, and I do not think that was easy for him to agree to do.? On the question whether or not there was also a financial compensation in place Denike responds: ?No comment on the financial aspects of the settlement.?
