Tame Impala Appreciation
« on: April 26, 2013, 06:31:49 PM »

Does anyone here like psychedelic rock? Ever heard of Tame Impala? Tame Impala is an Australian band created by Kevin Parker. I think Parker's voice is very John Lennon-esque. They have a mid 1960's sound. They kinda sound like a mix of Cream and late Beatles.

If you're into it, cool. If not, whatevz, it's cool.

They are my favorite band from the 2000s. In my opinion, most of their songs are good for skate part edits. Not only that... but their music is great to just chill in your room and listen to. And honestly, I don't think they get too much credit or too little credit.

he's got a point though. i think they suffered from over-hype, by the time i heard the album i was like "it's good, but it's not THAT good"

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

Believe this song was done before they were calling themselves Tame Impala (Dee Dee Dums) but I think this still belongs here.

reasons to be blissfully unaware of the hype machine. pay just enough attention to hear about new shit and no more. i still fucking love their new album, good memories of rivers and mountains and beers last summer

I was really hyped when Innerspeaker came out a few years back. What drew me to the band initially was their Beatles-esque vocals and overall sound. Fully backing them! Chill music is always a joy to listen to.

A few of their newer songs have been coming on XM radio lately, but (to me) it doesn't really seem like they're overhyped or anything quite yet.

Agreed. I like the throwback sound. Kevin sounds like John.

And John Lennon is one of my favorite musicians. So a modern day band that actually plays well together with a vocalist that has vocals reminiscent of Lennon is perfect.

They aren't bad but nowhere near as good as people make them out to be. If you dig psychy kinda stuff get the new White Fence record. Instant classic in my opinion, sounds almost like a heavy psych guided by voices.

Thanks for that recommendation. I'll check out White Fence. And honestly, I don't get the vibe that Tame Impala is over hyped. I haven't seen some over the top praise or ridiculous comments about them. I don't even think Lonerism is perfect. The vocals in "Feels Like We're Only Going Backwards" sound a bit pitchy. But I love their overall sound.

Speaking of the psychedelic sound, I think this is a really important song to pay attention to:

I believe that started the psychedelic rock genre. That Beatles song is the ultimate influence of bands like Tame Impala. Lennon's vocals in that song sound very similar to Parker's vocals in most Tame Impala tracks. There are many elements of music that impinge on the sound identity of Tame Impala. Cream-esque instruments. Pink Floyd-esque instruments. John Lennon's voice. Other bands have different classic elements of rock that make them great too.

also why is this in the appreciation section and not the music section? thats what pisses me off about this band. they have undeservedly been elevated to the plane of the appreciation section, home of such pop culture icons as wutang clan, the simpsons, and john cena.

I love the Beatles, their influence will forever be felt in music. And their psychedelic tracks (especially the deep psychedelic Eastern-influenced sound) are some of the best in their discography.

---BUT... If you guys are really going to bring up the origins of psychedelic rock, you have to look to the 13th Floor Elevators.
