Smart Phone advice
« on: May 25, 2013, 08:09:05 AM »
My I-phone is on its last legs due to years of abuse.

I want to buy a new phone, thinking of hopping over to an HTC One or may be the Samsung G4.

Any advice? The I-phone 5 looks good too...

I have got a bit sick of the internet reviews, any of you own one of these three?

Thanks will do. It seems like quite a wedge of cash these days... I hate it but you start looking and then you get sucked in to the whole consumer loop... And they always keep it so in 6 months time there is a new upgrade with all the extra shit. :-[

htc 8x is a great windows phone

pros:
light
sleek
durable (dropped mine down a concrete stair well and you can't even tell. anyone other phone I've owned would have been destroyed)
built protective case
fast
fits well in pocket
build is not pretentious but has great build quality (nice sweet spot between apple and Samsung)

cons:
weak camera
smaller HD then some other phones (trade off to smaller phone)
windows phone app eco system is smaller than others (I don't really use apps so it doesn't really apply to me and they have armed which is the sickest game ever)

If you're due for an upgrade I say go for the iPhone 5. If it aint broke dont fix it ya know? Android OS is always a bit hit & miss & gets buggy after a while. Also if you're looking for a good case I say go for the LifeProof joints. they're expensive but the peace of mind is worth it.

Yeah, it seems like Apple has fallen behind a bit though. Still, I have had no problems with my old I-Phone... Tempted by the bigger screens etc. It is that silly situation where you need a new phone but there is always something else waiting around the corner. Sucked in...

Funny Wedding commercial - Switch to the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone

i'd probably go android over apple but i hate apple products. this guy at my work just got a new android that looked really nice but the build qualities are never as good as apple. but i personally don't like aluminum, it's heavy and cold.

Don't get anything with a MS Windows OS.  I would just go with an iPhone.

i'm in the same boat. i've been eligible for an upgrade since october, but there hasn't been anything i really wanted come out. i lean toward android more because it's what i have now and i'm pretty invested in google products (gmail, drive etc.). that said, google apps on the iphone have gotten pretty good lately. i just really hate itunes.

Yeah that's the thing with iPhones they just work. I've had android phones & I just grew tired of all bugginess. Other phones may have some snazzy new features you may or may not use but at the end of the day the iPhones are built better & are just more reliable all around.

I'm due for a new phone too. I'm just going to wait though, since where I'm working for the summer doesn't even have sprint coverage. Probably wind up with an iPhone though.

Do they still make those waffle grip vans iphone covers? If so then my decision has been made for me. I'm that kind of consumer.

Go try out an iPhone 5 first, see if you like the form factor. I can't get used to having to stretch my thumb that extra bit for the longer body, so I'm sticking with my 4S. I think you can get a 4S for super cheap with a contract.

I just got one for 99 cents with a new contract.

I went from Htc evo 4g to iPhone 5.  I couldn't be happier.  Even with my heavy otterbox case, it's plenty light and fast as hell.  I just wish the 4g coverage was better in Honolulu.  Camera takes great pictures and video.

Upgraded my iPhone 4S to a Galaxy S3 and I don't think I will go back to Apple. It can do so much more than an iPhone can plus I love having 80gb of storage, means i don't have to constantly delete songs to fit new ones on.

Plus it's also the best for porn.

most of the time when someone would show me their iPhone, they just show me some horrible bug ... how do you even hard-reset an iPhone? pull the battery out :D

just go with Android and support the microUSB charger initiative

I've never had any major bugs with mine & I've had it for years. Any small bugs are usually fixed by turning it off & turning it on again, but in my case that's very rarely ever happened.

I'd like to know what kind of "horrible bug" you're talking about because me & everyone else I know that has an iPhone have had no major problems with them

I've got the Lumina 920 as I was given one pre release from work. Look Windows phone is good, its a sick interface and the hardware in the 920 is great. I actually find it syncs everything much better and I saves me heaps of time. That being said, I would probably just go and buy an iPhone4s, the five is nicer but I've heard too many battery complaints and I don't think the difference between the two models is huge. I find that if your not going to be needing to keep track of meetings and use office on the go, ios is stable easy to use and reliable. Android is clunky as fuck and looks like total shit, but the HTC One is hardware wise such a decent phone and if I didn't hate android I would be getting it. MS app store while its safe, tested and growing so fast can really be a let down where as ios and android are tits.

Being tempted by a bigger screen seems stupid to me.
I bought an old, used iPhone 3gs without simlock some time ago and it works and works.
There is nothing essential the iPhone 5 can do but the 3gs can't. That way I save a couple hundred Euros. They only produce new stuff to keep their business going, it's so obvious. It's nothing more than a status symbol.
Better spend that money on travelling/ clothes/ skatestuff/ better food and beer.

I actually have a 3GS too and it has been great. Well, apart from the fact I had to buy it out when I left Japan and the bastards locked it and wouldn't unlock it. Ended up getting it jail broken and now I can't update the IOS to a version new enough to download any apps!

It has been dropped once too many times and a big piece fell off this morning...

Apart from the locking thing though, IOS seems really easy to use to me.

I bought a Mac book a few years back and I've found it way less hassle than previous windows machines. May be I should stick with Apple, fundamentally, I want something that works well.

So much shit written on the web. Leaves you not knowing shit, having read a load...

Buying outright. Can't be fucked with getting into a contract.

screen glitches and screen freezes, haven't seen any on Andriod, but I probably will when the phone gets older (still, it just shows that the OSes are equal in stability terms)

Having worked for a telco for the last 32 months, I can safely say all phones are shit. Every model we've sold always has customers coming back with issues. Windows phones come back a shit load. More so then Android  & iPhone.
