Hey guys, I recently broke my ankle in 3 places and could need surgery. I noticed people talking about new hobbies, what did you guys do when you were still in a cast.

I broke a couple of bones in my foot and screwed up my ankle and blah blah blah back on Memorial Day. I seriously went swimming every day/other day for two months straight. My ankle is still tight, but gets better each day. If you spell out your abc's with your bad foot/ankle it starts to get your range of motion back. I did the same thing to my opposite foot/ankle two years ago as well. That took maybe six months from getting hurt to skating again. It sucks but you skate so you should know what you're getting yourself into. If you rush it you risk taking longer to heal or even potentially never skating the same way ever again
fuck you bama

Jerked it, slept, watched skate videos, and hung out with friends while they skated.

Yeah Ive got a robot ankle these days, 19 screws, a plate, and rubber bands attached to my ligaments. I probably have 80-90% range of motion depending on the day, but it doesn't really bother me skating at all, oddly enough in ways I'm better at skating then I was before surgery. I do stretches, bike, swim, and a lot of the other things mentioned in here. I don't wear an ankle brace either, although I might wear one today after I rolled it slightly yesterday... I really need to learn how to slam better, as mentioned I always try to run shit out and get fucked up.

Well, I broke my foot last night. I haven't been to my orthopedic doctor yet. They're closed until tomorrow. I'm hoping that I don't have to get surgery. I'm really nervous.

I broke my ankle November of last year, it was fucking rough i dislocated my ankle and broke my fibula. I had to get surgery and got a plate and some screws in my ankle as well as a strap like thing in there to get my ligaments back into place. Surgery sucks but thankfully the younger you are the faster it heals. Do what you can to keep your mind off of the cast once its on and don't stress about not being able to skate cause it will go by a lot faster than you think (I was in a cast for 5 weeks and a walking boot for 6 weeks). Like everyone says make sure you do pt or your seriously fucked. It's not too bad and even walking once you're able to helps recovery. Getting back into skating again is a whole different challenge though, I've been skating again since the end of May and although my confidence is back I still don't feel like i did before the injury and i don't know if i ever will. I never got pissed or stressed I was just psyched to be skating again. I hope some of this helps, good luck man i feel for you!

thanks!
and it was skating of course... I jumped off my board to avoid a collision and next thing I know, my foot is bent sideways. I actually put it back into place myself, by instinct. lemme tell you, having 2 casts at the same time is a bitch!
the worst thing is, I think I 'm done skating. I'm 39, I got 2 kids and a job....I can't take those risks anymore.
Bye skateboarding, it's been almost 30 hellacious years! Good times, and pain.

I feel for you, shit man.  I just got back on the board after a 6 or 7 year hiatus, and two weeks into skating again turned my push-pop ankle on a bad heelflip landing.  I recently had my first child, and the first thing I thought after I heard the terrible "pop" when the ankle folded was: "FUCK.  How am I going to care for the little man when I'm hobbling around the apartment?!"  Somewhat miraculously, I seem to have done way less damage to it than I expected.  There was very little swelling and I have been able to maintain my range of motion through repeated icing/heating.  After 72 hrs I began doing the alphabet and standing on one foot for repeated intervals.  At 7 days I began with resistance bands and have continued with a bag of great exercises daily.

This video was helpful to me, Perhaps it can help some others looking for recovery stretching & Stregnthening exercises:

I wish everyone in this thread good luck with their injuries.  Yeah it's part of the game, but that doesn't mean we gotta like it.  ....

yeah it's a whole different ball game when your family depends on you. I'll definitely try some of the video's exercices when the cast is taken off, thanks.

Lazyeyes: I definitely intend to keep active! I go nuts without some kind of exercice. I'll probably do some mountain biking and diving, 2 sports I already practiced from time to time... I'll skate to the store and cruise around as long as I can, but "real" skating is over for me.

That's good to hear.  The whole sitting around getting fat and unhealthy is a bigger hit to my quality of life than the arthritic knees for me.  Just got to keep moving.

Thanks, man.
Went to the orthopaedic doctor today. They gave me a choice of either having a screw put in my foot or being put in a cast. I decided to go with the cast.

Actually that?s one thing that makes it easier to swallow for me: both my knees are arthritic as well (multiple meniscus surgeries), and I knew my skating time was going to end quite soon anyway. Strangely enough, I couldn?t play football, basketball or anything like  that without my knees swelling and shit but I could still skate tranny?
I'm quite envious of the guys who can still skate good past 30 or 40, but most of the guys I know have some part of their pretty fucked after 15 + years or more of skating...Maybe I should've given up sooner but I loved it too much.

Sorry for the old ass bump, but I just broke my ankle about a month ago and had surgery a week ago where I had a plate and a few screws put in. My fibula broke completely and my tibia was partially dislocated. It'll be about seven weeks before I can get rid of this boot and and once I can walk normally I plan on getting back to biking and skating. Although Doc says it'll be 4-5 months before I get all my muscle memory back and can skate like normal. I'm only 18 so obviously shit's gonna heal pretty quickly, but what I want to know is, how do you guys go back to skating from shit like this? Judging from this and the other thread, it's sounding like you guys just jump back in. I don't jump down shit or do crazy flip tricks into grinds or anything, but could I hop back on board and immediately start doing ollies and boardslides and 50-50s or do I have to start real slow like just start out with cruising and slappies? I ride loose trucks so that'll help with building my strength back up and then like I said I bike virtually every day as well, which will also help. I fully plan on doing rehab/pt because I'd rather not have a ton of lifelong problems because of this.

I saw your mom do a ollie to cooch drop straight down the big black pole, it was gnarly. she defiantly shut that shit down

just cruise to shops/bars until it feels comfortable enough again
then you can get back to tricks and such

Get on PT hardcore. Do the exercises at home 3 or 4 times per day too. Ice then heat after.

Stretch alot. Basically physio is going to become a huge chunk of your life for some time.

Eat lots of protein and healthy fats to aid in inflammation and the healing process. Get used to bathing with epsolm salts to relax tense muscles.

Learn deep tissue message to break up or prevent scar tissue from forming. It hurts but it works.

By a tens machine if you can to reduce pain and inflammation.

Don't fuckin drink alcohol. It slows recovery time alot. Smoke or eat cannabis instead. Also NSAIDS should be avoided to if possible be ause they too slow the healing process.

Watch movies, read books, do art of any sort, just to keep your mind off not skating

Sometimes, if you take it seriously, a person can come out of an injury better then pre injury. Focus on being one of those people.

And best wishes, injuries fuckin suck

I have to wear ankle braces with hard plastic on both ankles if i skate.  S-One used to make them but i think they went out of business.  I roll my ankle just walking off a curb wrong.  I was told by a doctor i need surgery on both ankles and they would be cauterized (burned) to shorten the ligaments.  I am not doing this right now because they said i'd be on crutches for 6 months.  If you have really weak ankles I suggest going to a place like walmart and getting a legit brace or they will probably keep rolling, i have only tweaked mine with the good braces: being able to skate the next day as opposed to 2 weeks.

I've seen people recover and skate harder later
and seen some others barely walking like a 80 years old grandpa after the injury

Take your time and let your body heal

I broke my Fibula from the bottom and my ankle was affected too when I was 24 (I'm 27 now) My feet was dislocated by 90? and I had surgery and 12 screws on the ankle and Fibula. This happened on January 12 and I was back to skating around 4 months later, as some people said here I been on the lucky side to go back to skate stronger than ever.

I did around 3 moths of recovery in a public centre (I'm from Spain, it's free here) but I had to do a lot of homework at home. My process was like that, Electrostimulator every day (I bought one), even 2 or 3 moths after been back to skateboard. Then I started with the balance board and static bike and after a month and a half, I started with a normal bike (that was like my methadone while I wasn't skating).

Right now I never felt hurt again or something, I just have a bigger ankle even when I took away the screws a year ago. My advice is simple, never force yourself, if you have the rush to be back on board that will affect your future even for walking. It takes time but I think it's worth to wait for it.

I know that sucks but try to do everything that is in your hands to be back stronger and take care with the diet because it's quite easy to win some weight and that will not help because your muscles will be weak than usual!

I broke my left fibula and dislocated my ankle pretty bad in March 2015. I got a metal plate on my fibula and two long screws connecting my fibula and tibia. I wasn't able to walk until late June and I never tried skating until August. I'm regular and it hurt really bad to try flip tricks, It also took me like 30 tries to nollie pop shove it which I used to land every try. Two years later and I'm pretty much back to where I was before the injury. I'm sure I could of gotten back into it earlier but I live in Alaska and can't skate during the winter. My left leg feels different but it's not really a bad thing.

Ouch! I had calcaneal cysts for 2+ years and had surgery to remove them about 2 years ago. But it did damage to my peroneal nerve (the nerve that runs down the outside of your leg) and it still is bothering me. Any pals have experience healing up from nerve damage?
