I knew a guy who was classically trained in piano and was super fucking good, but didn't care about music in general.
My friend that didnt really care about music was one of the most naturally talented skateboarders I've ever witnessed and didn't really care much about skateboarding. He went skating and stuff but flaked on arrangements with sponsors or forgot to call photographers. The guy could land consistent 720's and board slide 14 stair rails in 1992 but couldn't get his head around commitments and I'm not sure if it ever bothered him.

Man, you guys make me feel old. I used to be a fanatic about music. Ravaged through pretty much every genre. Now I am indifferent. I think it's an age thing. Though, I have friends of the same age who are still rabid about music, but they are all musicians. Everyone else my age is somewhere between me and my musician friends.

But, that's one of the things I like about Brandon. He's hella mature for his age. I wish I had my current mindset at age 24...

I don't think it's an age thing, I guess I just don't understand how someone can bored with music. We're skateboarders, almost all of our documentation is set to music, and it can make or break that. Music has progression too, even if it's just individual progression plowing through genres and artists and finding what you dig. It's all about the exploration, the journey. Not necessarily the end game.

Oh, I find music is integral -- when accompanied by something else. Such as skating, or documentaries, or parties. But I rarely ever listen to it by itself. I think part of it is age, but another part is that A) contemporary music bores the crap out of me and B) I've researched the shit out of older music. I just feel like there's not much I haven't come across. And remakes are so vapid.

There's a lot of great contemporary music if you look hard enough. Or know where to look, or ask around. Or learn an instrument (assuming you don't already know one) I found that learning a new instrument really reopens the interest in music

I totally agree; I bought a drum kit from a buddy and working a bit on the drums re-energized a piece of my mind for listening to music that I'd forgotten about.

I could definitely see how learning an instrument might reignite the spark. But, I don't feel like anything is missing. I'm content with or without music. Who knows. Maybe that will change.

that's it right there. most people have a time in their life where finding contemporary music isn't hard because you are surrounded by people who are into music when you are young. but when you get older, just like less of your friends skate, i find that a lot less of them also are into music. so to find interesting new stuff it takes a lot of time and effort. i have a job that allows me to listen to music 4-6 hours a day so i put in some work on it. but for other people, once you start working full time and coming home to a tired wife and wound up kids, it's kind of hard to find time to sit down and relax to a new album.

except for stoners, i don't really know anyone my age that keeps up with music. but that makes sense because when your faded, you've implicitly got time to chill.
