Stockholm
« on: December 04, 2013, 09:25:01 AM »
I did a search for Stockholm and just found a few posts about visiting and I might be living out there for a while so I had some questions I was hoping I could get some help with (I started a thread on Odense awhile ago and have since found out I'll likely be headed to Stockholm, Thanks for the help on that one anyways RoedGroed).  Most of what I can find on Sweden focuses on Malmo but I have heard that Stockholm is just as rad, I just can't find a lot of info.  Thanks in advance for any help, I would gnar the fuck out of you if I could.

Any good websites/shops to check out?
Pretty much all I have found are Bellows https://www.facebook.com/bradkultur.sthlm, Bradkultur https://www.facebook.com/bradkultur.sthlm, and Polar (unfortunately Polar is pretty focused on Malmo from what I can tell).

Best way to find out about all the skateparks?  I found 2-3 on Google maps and Concrete Disciples has some good ones http://www.concretedisciples.com/skatepark-directory/skateparks/sweden_c118/.  Any other lists/websites/books to checkout?
I found this but they don't ship to the US...http://transition.tictail.com/product/transition-2-betongparksguide...is it worth trying to get my hands on?

Any suggestions in terms of general areas where a lot of street spots are?

If you could choose any area in the city to live for it's accessibility to spots/parks where would it be?  I am going to be working on the northern side and wondering where a good place to live without having to commute a ton would be.

How the fuck do you handle the winters?  I am ok skating in cold weather (-10C - 0C) but how do you deal with the 2-3 hours of sunlight.  That's new to me, does skating just shutdown outside for the winter or are there still options?  The Pontus Alv vids and Coping Mechanism http://skatemalmo.se/coping-mechanism/ paint a pretty good picture of Malmo, is Stockholm similar weather/temp wise or is it a rougher since it's further north?

Polar is focused on Malmo cause Pontus is from malmo and lives in malmo . Malmo is also abit tighter with Copenhagen since there has always been abit of a semi friendly hate / hate relationship betwen stockholm and malmo . Or maybe Malmo vs rest of sweden ...

If you dont have alot of money its much cheaper to live in the outskirts / suburbs of stockholm and commute into the city . Subway / train and buss tickets are pretty cheap and reliable . Trying to live close to all the skatespots in stockholm would prob cause you to have a super high rent bill .

Malmo is abit warmer then stockholm but its pretty much almost the same . The lack of sunlight is something you just have to get used to or get fucking depressed . Just do what you need to do , or you can do like most swedes and just chill more indoors , movie nights with pizza , stay on the computer or get together with friends .

Stockholm is a pretty nice city so make sure to walk around alot and check it out , look for spots and sights

As far as shops go, Bradkultur is the only 'core' shop in Stockholm and they have a good selection too. There's also a place called Hollywood across the street but they're pretty... lame.

When it comes to spots, check this guide out which has both indoor parks and street spots (which you wont be hitting until april at earliest though): http://www.tacky.se/skateboard/spot/

If you're going to be working north of Stockholm, I'd try and get a place in Solna or Sundbyberg if possible. Its 10 minutes to the city but still has a smaller town feel to i, I like it alot. If you wanna move further out than that, I'd try to get a place in Jakobsberg or Barkaby which  is like 20 minutes from the city but is still a bigger place with more shit to do.

I've lived here all my life so if there's anything you want to ask or that I can do for you somehow, I'd be down to help out. Just write here or PM me

Fj?lltr?sk! When i lived there we used to skate subway stations in the wintertime since the indoor parks are often crowded.
Also some street spots can be skated year round, depends on how motivated you are. Get used to shoveling snow and such.

some of my go to winter spots when i lived there:
Tekniska h?gskolan station
R?dhuset station
?hl?ns parking garage
St:eriksplan parking garage

then you have the indoor parks.

A lot of areas are nice to live in, if you are gonna be north of the city i would say Sundbyberg for sure. But as long as you have a busstop or a metro station close you will be fine.

As far as skateshops go i would say coyote grind lounge is nice, but i haven't been there in years.
Also check out https://www.facebook.com/FabrikenSkateboards for a rad stockholm based company.
Coping with the winter equals beer and chilling indoors mostly,

so yeah

Holy shit, thanks for all the info!  That helps a lot in terms of giving me an idea of where to start looking. http://www.tacky.se/skateboard/spot/ has a ton of spots and I found a skatepark like two blocks away from where I might be that I didn't catch with all my previous Google Map scanning.  Good looking out.

I am glad to hear that the public transportation system is pretty dialed because every U.S. city I have ever lived in, it's been pretty shit and wasn't much of an option.  Also, it really helps to know a few towns to start looking at and thanks for the quick description of each.  I'll probably be out there in Jan/Feb to check things out which is going to suck relative to skating but at least I'll see the worst that I'll have to deal with in terms of cold as balls darkness. I am more worried about the darkness fucking with my head more than I am the cold at this point.

Thanks again, SLAP you never cease to amaze.

Bellows is owned by my old friends Martin and Love, they both does alot for the scene.
Since i live in Gothenburg now, i doesnt visit Stockholm as frequently as i want to, most of my skate friends lives there.
let me know when you are going and i can set you up for a session with some older shredders.

Here is an old movie from the Swedish scene around 95-96, with a young Ali, a 14 year old Pontus and many more rippers.
