Long time lurker first time poster. 45 turning 46 in a month. Been skating since 1985, died down a little in the 90s after I lost my sponsors and went to art school. Picked it up seriously again in late 90s until the mid 2000s. Last 6 years have been at it again.  Now last month I fell like a stone to my hip and cracked the femural neck at my hip. Basic broken hip and I got three screws. Doctor said today I should never skateboard again. The screws are in for life and if I wreck them I am in trouble.  At the moment I am just working on walking again let alone skating but this was some harsh news. Anyone ever get this sort of advice from a doctor?
Yo dude, dont trip about it! Doctors are people too, that means some of them suck and dont know how to handle patient emotions and fears.
the bone broke, they fixed it, now let it heal and youll be a 100%. youre not young anymore so it would take some time (seriously lay off the alcohol and cigs, it would help ALOT) but once it heals theres no reason not to skate. bone will even grow stronger when its under strain. the only thing i would worry about is falling on it hard in the next 6-8 months. other than that you should be good.
the only complications i can think of is if they cut a muscle or hit a nerve while they did the surgical cut and maybe some loss of range of motion because of the screws or the fixation being slightly off but with time and physical therapy you should be back to normal.
another thing about injuries, sometimes you wont be able to get all the tricks you had back in the day but you will find a way to skate and learn new trick and keep things fun
i had a 60 yo patient with a hip replacement swimming an hour a day 3 weeks after the surgery and now he rides bicycle and runs long distances (falling hard on dirt road etc.)
You broke a bone and that sucks, but from this to actually saying you cant skate? he has no idea whats up.

Harsh indeed. I can offer nothing other than sympathy and hope that you can at the very least roll again.

Thanks... I just hope I can still do rock and rolls and grinds in a bowl again (me in the IG video) Nothing more than that is needed. I can be chill and stay within my ability.  I think I just have to be more careful and be in touch with my condition physically a little more. I was tired and stiff when I fell so hard. I suppose, In future I have to be more cautious but also more aware of energy levels.I dont want to stop skating bowls!

That sounds rough dude sorry. Sounds like he's just telling you it's not worth the risk to slam on your hip again. Not that it's not possible to still skateboard. It would make me think twice about it. You have a lot of life left to live to have a fucked hip and not be able to get around. Maybe look into some heavy pads you can wear under pants. There are some compression short type things that have pads built into them.

That was a nice and proper rock and roll!

I hope you are able to do them again. I think you will eventually be physically able to but you may want to consult another Dr. for a balanced assessment of risk.

You won't like this story but I know a guy, lifetime skater, vert ripper, 40s, who broke his hip doing an invert in a pool and walked away from skating cold turkey after that. Decided it wasn't worth the risk of missing out on the rest of a fully active life.

I myself have had some doubts since my last injuries but I can't seem to break up with the board.

You'll figure it out.

I think of my body like A car, it needs maintenance. I eat well now, i drink water, lots. I work out a few days a week, i walk every night. I stretch and do yoga every morning and night.
It's a lot, and most people expect that they can just going on like normal without some type of change.
All my friends say the same thing, they are interested in still skating but they just complain without the motivation to attempt to fix whats wrong. I realize it isn't the more fun option, but it keeps me skating daily.
Sorry if that isn't the feel good "You got this" response the world expects now, but your 30's can physically be the best years of skating if you prepare/plan. Old enough to be done drinking too much and job/schedule stability.
I work hard to still be able to skate almost daily at 43, i sacrificed a lot.
But no, it doesn't get easier, if you lack structure in your personal life, that makes it even harder.
Good luck hope you find a happy medium.

Doctor said today I should never skateboard again. Anyone ever get this sort of advice from a doctor?

When i was maybe 15 or 16 years old i was diagnosed with all kinds of problems in my back/spine and the doctors pretty much told me and my parents i should find some other hobby and never skate again. I've also had arthritis in both of my hips since i was about 18, which was also a "good enough" reason for the doctor diagnosing those to recommend never skating again.

Im 34 now and i've been skating constantly the whole time and now im slowly starting to notice the negative effects on my body but i still try to skate somewhat seriously and go out filming and challenge myself with new tricks (every day the no-comply to ollie ratio is more and more skewed towards no-complies, though). Im well aware of the fact that it might be hard for me to walk if i ever live to be 50 years old but a little effort and exercise can do wonders to keep your body in better shape and being able to skate at least in a close to the ground, low-impact way.

I guess what im trying to say is that you shouldn't listen to doctors rather than your own body. And always keep the mentality that you're going to skate in some way no matter what, even if it might not be on the same level that it was in your early twenties or so.

doctors are wrong as often as fast food clerks. they're just people and people are dummies. wasn't it a doctor who told cardiel he'd never  walk again?
keep doing it, LS and everyone. don't let other people talk you out of anything.
i'd rather be crippled at 50 than 50 and regret not skating all the preceding yrs.
remember that anti hero/hemingway ad was like

mm I knew that came out wrong....Was trying to be positive too. Especially since we're the same age and you're skating way better than me. I know for sure since I tried straight no complys down stuff like you did!

Also I totally ascribe to that 'body as a car' view. I've gotta start applying it myself. I had a nice little sesh yesterday with an old buddy and today my back is fucked. I have to do back/core exercices everyday like I did before to be able to skate properly again. I'm still nowhere near the level I was at before breaking my ankle... But I try not to let that stop me from having fun.
The strange and awesome thing is I realized that when I'm cruising around the city, weaving in and around traffic/pedestrians, is when I feel like myself. I barely skated for 3 years after my injury and now I realize how much I missed it. Even if it's just cruising! Unfortunately winter's coming so....
Right, end of old man rant. Keep it up all you old farts worldwide!

I have one guaranteed skate day a week, others are take them when I can get them. The past three in a row have been called off for weather and it's driving me fucking insane.

Old fart, new part.
Filmed from November 2016 - Sept 2017.
So I got a month of 39 in here. Otherwise all 40 club tricks.
Personal highlights:
Without a doubt; more lines than I've ever had in a part. I'm pretty sure I've filmed whole parts of single tricks.
First kickflip varial I've filmed this century. Those are still legal, right?

Old dude checking in. 32yo, about to turn 33 in a few weeks. I just started skating again back in April after not doing it for a few years (got married/divorced) and recently relocated to Portland, OR.  Finally feel like I'm getting tricks back which is good, looking forward to actually learning new ones though. I think the toughest part of coming back to skating after years of not doing it, and especially in your 30s is how fucking horrible it feels to warm up to skate. When I first get to the spot/park I can't even ollie up a curb and occasionally eat shit on just flat ground ollies haha. It's fucking demoralizing. It usually takes like a half hour to warm my legs up enough to actually start doing shit, too bad I can't skate for more than an hour though before my legs are exhausted. How long are you guys able to skate? Have any tips on how to increase skate endurance? Is warming up this horrible for everyone in their 30s?

Those clips were rad man!
I'll see if I can post something here for the sake of it, ha.

I'll be 36 next month. I skate about twice a week, usually between an hour and a half and 2 hours, with friends or whoever is at the park. I live in the sticks and also regularly go for quick solo skates in my village, a quick skate lasting 15 to 45 minutes. I like taking my time to warm up, I just can't start the sesh with a game of SKATE with tons of flip tricks like most people younger than me do. I often skate with kids and find their energy and the way they try new tricks quite inspiring. I always walked a lot so I suppose this helps me. I also try to avoid booze if I know I want to to skate the day after as even mini hangovers destroy my legs these days.
Well, I guess my point is that the more often you skate, the stronger you'll feel, the longer you'll be able to skate every time you step foot on your board. No rocket science here but it's how it works.

Have fun!

Cry a little.
Then move onto his G6.
I've got 3 more pairs of the Lows in the box. Love that shoe.
I just got a pair of the G6's. The all brown ones. They feel almost the same as the lows.
I'm not allowing myself to skate them until I finish off my Low stockpile.

fuck handsclapanin, that was epic, really motivational stuff (though I don't think I'll ever post any of my footage on slap now)

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

some tricks come easier than others. but that one was a battle.
in the beginning I was giving it my best Rob Welsh impression. really trying to nollie out. but I kept landing with only half of my nose on the next ledge. 50 - 70 tries and a couple hours later, I realized the way to make it work was to just haul ass and pretend the gap didn't exist.
