Old guy question:
Does it ever annoy you when playing SKATE with the younger generation they automatically assume that Berrics BATB rules apply? The reason I ask is that if by chance I get them to T I'm almost certainly out of flip trick variations from my bag and a no comly variation is what I want to take them out. That or a Sal flip.

Was shopping for new insurance this week and one of the questions
Progressive asked was do I have a skateboard ramp taller than 1 foot
on the property. Ha, never seen that one before. I just said no, all I have
right now is a quarter pipe and I figure I can tear that down quick if I need to.

48 this January. Been out w a ruptured disc for almost 2 mnths now. Have limited use of my left leg and not sure if its ever coming back . But after reading all these posts Im really glad Im an old transition guy. Theres no pushing involved and carving and slash grinding bring me the juice I need from skating. Also being involved w the building and modifying of backyard spots.Hopefully I'll be back on board soon. That is all...

The bottom line for me is: I will always love the feeling of just pushing and rolling. I still love doing tricks, and I hope to have lots more years of that. But in the end, when I'm too old to flip the board, I'll still love just pushing around some downtown or parking lot somewhere. If you get in touch with that essence of the whole thing (yeah, it's hokey but whatever), you'll always have fun - even if you're not having a good day, trick-wise, or your energy is low or whatever.

[close]

The above is exactly what I didn't understand when I stopped skateboarding in my late teens.  I have a tendency to get easily frustrated with myself if I am not performing at or near what I perceive to be a "high-level" in whatever discipline I'm involved in, be it photography, skateboarding, graffiti, whatever.

Rather than being a "quitter," I will give a thing my all for several years, or even a decade, only to finally decide their is no point in continuing to do it because I will never be "good enough".  Thankfully, I have disabused myself of this habit, and now find myself enjoying the things I love for what they are and the joy they bring me, plain & simple.

Returning to skateboarding has only been possible in light of this change in attitude.  Even if I never get fliptricks back, and never ollie higher than 2' again, I will be content because I have finally found that elusive"essence" you describe; in the most literal meaning of the word: that which is essential.  Fuck the bullshit.

i'm with you guys 100%.  one thing i've noticed is that when I was younger i never really just cruised around on my board.  it was all about getting to the spots... "cruiser" boards weren't really a thing.  it's one of my favorite things in the world to do now... just forget the car and haul ass down the street.  nothing more fun than that.

I'm an old dude...so I'll join in the fun on here.
Age: 41
Setup- 7.825 SLAVE or ZERO (I work for Blackbox), 50mm wheels (keeping it probably the lowest to the ground on here), low indys
Terrain- ledges that get lower and lower each year, manny pads, flatground for days...
Fav's- MJ, Creager, Busenitz, Gonz, Shane O'Neil, Hensley, Ray Barbee all day long
Music- early 90's gangster rap, Smiths, Cure, 80's punk
Occupation- Sales rep in Skate industry, head judge at most Pro and Am contests since 2000

The familiar theme on this whole thread is about warming up.  That's seriously the most difficult thing I deal with each time I go out and I battle and battle to get over it.  I was always the first try out of the car and never needed any warmup, so I really have to force myself to roll around doing barely anything these days just to get my legs going.  It probably sounds so stupid to someone who's younger, but it's the biggest thing I have to get past for a good skate session.
I 100% agree with people on here who have said that ollies just aren't crispy anymore.  You pretty much feel like a soggy, wet dog everytime you get off the ground.  Gravity is my worst enemy these days.
But...if I just go out and keep my flatground game somewhat tight (by going out 2 times a week), everything else falls into place.  I will not have skated a ledge for a while but if I've just been skating flat and keeping up with games of SKATE vs the homies, I can get down pretty easily.  If I go too long between skating, then it all goes to hell real quick.
Even working in the skate industry since 1998, you would think it's just like you can skate everyday, but just like everyone else and any other job, I struggle to find time to get out and skate.  If we're running a contest somewhere, sometimes we're there from 8am-7pm.  Even watching all that ripping...at the end of that day I'm still thinking about going back to the hotel and chilling cause I'm beat.  One thing we do have a solid tradition of though is at Tampa Am and Pro, I get the keys to the park and show up at 11pm well after everyone is gone to have a super rad private session with a bunch of old dudes.  Me, Josh Friedberg, Zitzer, Vern, James Craig, Sinclair, Bob Reynolds, Andrew Cannon (not old but old at heart).  That's the usual crew.  I realized that about 5-6 years ago that we need to take advantage of being so lucky with places like that when we can.

fuck it, i'll play along,
37, turning 38 shortly, married, two kids
Riding an 8.25 Krooked, always Indy's, 139's, and 52 Spitty's.
I'll skate anything and enjoy it all.
Don't get to skate nearly as much as I would like to, but my 4 year old got himself a board and padded up this year. We'd skate flatground for an hour or 2 and it fucking ripped.

I hope to be able to skate forever, we'll see if my carcass will allow it.

I'd love to work in skateboarding somehow too, but I live in Canada, and have to bills to pay.....

Beazelocal...I'm lucky enough to live here in SoCal to work in the skate industry.  If I didn't live here, I would be doing something else for sure (but still skating).

Right on, I'm glad so many of you checked in and introduced yourselves. There's more of you than I thought there would be and I don't recognize a lot of your names as regular posters in the everyday threads here (although I don't pay much attention so I could be wrong.) Keep it coming...

Rothdigga, it seems that you're living every old dude in here's dream hahaha. The Cold War video was fucking regular. Jamie really put it down for us old guys and Tommy and Dane set the bar a little higher for the stair/rail/gap dogs for sure.

I hear what a lot of you are saying about the inevitable body breakdown, but it's not affecting me too severely yet. I don't take great care of myself, I do bad and good things, and I'm not overweight and in good shape. I get up at 4:30 every morning and lift heavy shit until 2:00 for work. But my knees, wrists, elbows, ankles, fingers, toes, feet, hands, and neck are totally destroyed from skating. I'm constantly covered in scabs, limping, everything is popping and cracking, and I'm in some kind of pain hahaha. The funny thing is, I don't feel it when I'm skating most of the time. I don't know if it's the adrenaline or what but I usually feel better after a session than I did when I started, and usually feel better the next day too.

I've done bigger stuff this year and learned more tricks than I ever have in my life. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hyping myself up; I still suck compared to most people. But I think that my positive attitude and the fact that I'm having so much fun plays a really big role in what I've accomplished lately.

We're having a warm snap here; it's supposed to be close to 60 tomorrow. I always skate on Sundays and hopefully we can get one last REAL street session before the snow starts falling.

I'm pushing 40, but enough of the dating bio thing... let's discuss "old guy stuff".

I guess you could say I'm going through a skateboarding crisis. Been skateboarding for so long and was semi decent, but nowadays when I step on a board I feel like I'm going to fall over sideways ala Koston as Chaplin in Mouse. It's quite sobering to go from taking pros out in S.K.A.T.E. to struggling to 50-50 a ledge (some days). I don't know what happened these last few years, but not being able to just roll around and consistently do even basic tricks puts a serious damper on the fun level. The ratio of bummer skate days to semi-ok ones is far too great. I feel conflicted. If I generally don't have fun skating does that mean it's "time to put the skateboard away"? If so, can I? It's my true passion in life. I can't see myself ever being able to get it out of my mind. The alternative seems worse: being a skateboarding fan while not doing it. Just like every other fat old dude cheering for their favorite sports team. I need a therapist.

I'm lucky to live in LA and work in the industry. Loads of inspirational guys around all the time! More so, there is a park near my place with a lot of dudes that are in there 30's and the all rip! It's been really good the last year skating with so many guys my age who still want to skate at a high level for their own enjoyment. Skating with pros can be really fun and very inspiring but can also be a total fucking bummer. Still trying to film that "last" part and feeling drivin for it to not suck.
