I think the arch pain thing comes from (at least for me) not skating for a while (i.e. longer than a week) and then skating like a mad-man for a day or two. Cause I fell into an awful routine of only skating every 10 days or so, and the arch pain was real harsh. But once I started skating more and more, it was like the  more I skated the less it hurt. Just something to think about.

Any Old Dudes in NYC wanna roll around the city some time? I think a large part of me not skating as much I should is lack of skate buddies

Do any of you guys over 35 have pain in the arches of your feet? I've had a regular arch all my life, I suppose. I've religiously wore Vans with waffle bottoms (mostly Half Cabs, Sk8-Hi's or Old Skools) for the 26 years I've been skating (give or take). However, now when I wake up in the morning after a day of skating, my feet begin to kill me as soon as they hit the floor. It's especially painful when I walk on the hardwoods barefoot. Again, I'm 38 and this has began to occur regularly the day after a sesh. I just thought I'd throw this out there to see if anyone else has this issue.

If you have good insurance, get some custom insoles.  My plan allows two pair a year and they are amazing.  I go to a sports medicine guy I met through running.  The ones I get retail for $600 if your insurance doesn't cover it.  I have them for running, skating, casual, and dress shoes.  The process is you bring in all your old shoes so they can see how the insoles, soles, and uppers wear down after you wear them, they do motion capture of you walking and jumping, then you put your foot in this box that is like a little MRI and makes a 3-D image of what you got going on.  2-3 weeks later you get a sweet pair of customs.

Thankfully I do have great insurance. Thank you very much for the tip. I had no idea this was possible.

Another random old guy tip- If you have good insurance, research the shit out of what they'll cover.  If you have a cool (Doesn't have to be shady, just know the system) Dr. you can get some really cool stuff.  Obviously don't go asking for random pills and shit.  My first boss out of college taught me this trick.  If your Dr./Masseuse can bill as a chiropractic appointment you can get free massages.  I get two a month from a legit sports place.  I don't think this can work at a strip mall rub and tug joint, but if the place is an actual medical facility, it works.  A lot of what insurance will or won't cover just depends on the code the Dr. enters.

I'd say the single most important change I've made that's helped me to keep skating and progressing is skating little and often instead of going out for a 6 hour binge once a week.

^ Same thing for me.

I'm 37 - and that kind of pain is almost chronic.

Although not in the arches but in the big toe mound of the pushing feet.
I learned that is called Sesamoiditis and there's nothing to do about it.
Just skate regularly and warm up the pushing motion gently.
I was afraid that it was some kind of rheumatoid arthritis.

Also, I learned that I'm becoming kinda apprehensive.

I got some custom orthotics like was mentioned earlier.....what tripped me out the most was how they support that area of my foot..... It's not like they are a cure all but yeah....if you have coverage well worth it....I can skate a vulc shoe again....

Custom orthotics sound amazing. I'm on the terrible high-deductible health insurance plan at my work right now so that I can take the most money home to my family, but that may change soon.  Would definitely look into that if i had legit coverage.

I've been having a new pain in the top of both my feet though.  More so my left (lead) foot than my pushing foot.  Dr. Google says tendonitis, or stress fractures.  Suggests rest for either, and more extensive warm up and stretching before activity so that the legs are better able to act as shock absorbers rather than forcing all the stress onto poor feet and ankles.  I just ordered some Lunar Gatos on Black Friday.  Like Sans Umbilical, I been Skating solid vulcs for as long as I can remember, so I'm hoping a little more support and cushion will improve the situation, without leading to rolled ankles.

Has anyone else on here(old guys not 20 somethings) had back/disc issues? I sure could use some advice, correspondence or just some good old fashioned comiseration on this issue.

Again, along with my arch issues, I have a herniated disc. I remember exactly when I did it skating. After an MRI, a months worth of prescribed muscle relaxers and lortab, I had a decision to make. A. Surgery B. Pain block shots C. Physical therapy. I decided not to go with any of those options and just see if it somehow worked itself out. Probably not a smart decision long term but I have little to no trouble or pain anymore. If I do have a flare up or whatever, I just don't skate for a couple of days. After a couple of days I'm fine. Again, I'm not sure this is the right way to go about this issue but it's what I decided to do for now.

I don't want to be a pain or be the guy who's using SLAP to solicit donations but it seems like there's a lot of cool, levelheaded guys posting here and I was hoping that you'd be willing to at least check out my thread "Please Read And Consider Making A Donation." http://www.slapmagazine.com/component/option,com_jfusion/Itemid,4/index.php?topic=74683.0

We're trying to build a skatepark in the name/memory of a young woman who was killed by a drunk driver while riding her skateboard home from work a few years ago and instead of "black Friday" or "Cyber Monday", tomorrow has been dubbed "Giving Tuesday" in hopes of raising some of the $30,000 to buy the land to build the park on.

Please take a minute or two to read the story and if you feel that it's a worthy cause, donate what you can, even if it's only one or two dollars. The price of a cup of coffee really can make a lot of difference in a lot of lives.

I won't be offended if you guys aren't interested or can't afford to donate, just don't be pissed that I shared it here and tried to get you guys to chip in. I just figured that I'd try to share it with as many people as I could, you know?

Thanks. Thats exactly what Im going through(herniated disc) and the exact options I was given. I've had 2 pain block shots and they work great I just cant seem to get the use of my left leg back completely Its been a little over 2 months and my thigh muscles are still not responding completely and i swear theres some atrophy(sp?) going on. I've been thinking of doing some leg lifts on my bench press but if the muscles arent responding then it would be a waste of time I suppose. Did you have any of these symptoms in your legs after your disc problems. im going insane not skating.

When I was 23 (15 years ago) I ruptured my S1-L5, L5-L4, and severely herniated my L4-L3.  Shit hurt.  All my doctors told me if I was going to continue skating and snowboarding I shouldn't have surgery.  All you can really do is lose weight, rehab and stretch very regularly, and if needed get cortisone.  Strengthen your core religiously.

I couldn't skate after that for almost 8-9 years, I was too jacked up.  About 6 years ago I slowly started getting back skating, just skating tranny pretty much.  After about 2 years of that I finally started street skating again.  You've gotta come back slow, as much as it sucks.  Now, I feel pretty good, all things considered.  I'm 38, super broken, but I'll still skate stairs / gaps / handrails, whatever.  It takes a good 5-6 days to heal after I do, but it is what it is.

Past 5 years I've been getting cortisone once a year.  I get an epidural down around S1, and facet joint injections at S1-L5, L5-L4 and L4-L3 on both sides.  So it's 7 injections really.  For about 4 months I feel like a million bucks, then it'll slowly start hurting again over the next several months.  You can't really do that forever, but I plan to for as long as there's things I still want to accomplish.

skating 21 years
polar, spitfires, indies
I'll skate whatever, just not as gnarly of whatever as I used to.
Basically all the joints below my waist are fucked, except for my right hip I guess.  My left hip is the worst of them. Too many big hippers in my younger days.
I still feel like I have plenty of years left if I tone it down a bit.
I definitely feel a little more hesitant to jump down shit the older I get
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”
I quit skating for a time due to piling out

dude if you got smith stalls you should get smith grinds soon no problem! to me that was the eureka moment, after years and years of not locking in properly: just think I'm gonna do a stall and then carve a bit more. that way I finally got smith grinds on lock last year, at 38, and that's THE trick I'm chomping at the mouth to do again when my ankle is healed!

Smith grinds are that one trick I've always sweated that I never really had locked. If I could get em down clean, my comeback at 30 will not have been in vain.

I've always had flat feet and issues with arch pain and body alignment. As a teenager I wore orthotics but just stopped as I outgrew them. Went to the doctor a few months back and got a referal to a specialist that I saw on Tuesday, she took one look and said shed make me some custom orthotics this Friday. All expenses paid by the NHS so here's to universal health care and my tax money coming back around.

dude if you got smith stalls you should get smith grinds soon no problem! to me that was the eureka moment, after years and years of not locking in properly: just think I'm gonna do a stall and then carve a bit more. that way I finally got smith grinds on lock last year, at 38, and that's THE trick I'm chomping at the mouth to do again when my ankle is healed!

i knew you'd be back

Being old I'd like the new black high waters, everyone wants in.
