First skate in over two months due to a stupid injury. Also first time filming myself. Excuse the cheesy slow-mo...

Bringing the best thread back to the top. 40 years old here, living in SE Asia currently, besides feeling less like jumping these days, feel as comfortable as ever. Even flipped my board this weekend. Enjoying lots of powerslide maneuvers these days. Basic slappy grinds, no complys, etc have been staples as long as I can remember, I guess the way I skate makes me look 'trendy' these days, but I just think it reflects my age. Anyways, lets hear some updates old dudes.  ;D

Any of you have (or at least remember) the Mike McGill hip pads? My first trip to the legendary Turf skatepark was also the first time I experienced having the wind knocked out of me. Fell straight on my ass in the Lipslide Gully. The next time I went there; I purchased some in the pro shop. They came with 2 hip pads and a little tailbone pad. I would probably still rock them today, if I had held onto them. Falling on my left (forward) hip seems to be my go to slam.

not much to tell on my part, as I skated about once in about 3 months, but I just had a random Alex Olson sighting in Paris this weekend, that was funny.
I was there to see my family and handle some work stuff, I'm walking near Bastille and I hear skaters coming. Just from the noise, I could tell they were good, cause they were going fast. So this big group of like 10 guys catches up with me and 2 dudes pop a huge ollie on the sidewalk bump. The first one landed in the street super close to traffic and I was like 'woah pretty gnar'! Then I look again and realize it's Alex Olson....

Always loved the way he skates and I was not disappointed with the 30 seconds I saw of him. That made me want to skate pretty bad, especially around Paris. Too bad I'm back in Belgium now, where all the sidewalks are fuckin cobblestone...

Turn 41 in Dec.

Was talking with wife the other day about 90's style coming back and said: "You should see the way the kids at the plaza dress these days." She was laughing about how old I sound LOL

41 in April buddy, right behind you. Like I said in my last post, I feel pretty OK at the moment, generally agile, though, I take care of myself, don't party much at all,  excercise daily. I wonder if it will all end suddenly. edit: I also get this weird feeling sometimes, like, why the fuck do I still do this, which is something I never had when I was younger. But, I realize, I'm pretty deep into it at this point, so, habitual or not, can't see it really ever leaving.

That was sick! Dealing with injury a bunch lately myself. Shoulder has become the big problem. It never really heals now & every time I fall and catch my weight with my hands (which is hard not to do sometimes) it makes things even worse.

Currently forcing myself to not skate at all for a couple weeks to see if I can heal more. What's frustrating is I can feel my skills intact underneath my malfunctioning body. Very strange feeling, this aging thing.:)

42 end of the month.....I had a good convo w. a dude same age.....still rips....he's throwing in the towel...it's a good reference point and conversation.  He only does stuff to 100% and he's super good.....I think it's a waste...but I get it....he picked up road biking or something that he can go 100% and not take a slam.....

Pretty stoked carrying on @ 60%......relatively injury free....

I keep filming stuff for this thread but it looks like barf.

The old knees gripe, while totally true, is getting trite. Although, I'm starting to enjoy that telling my age (39) elicits gasps from the young ones.

So has anyone else realized you're older than the security/police when they kick you out? That felt weird the first few times. Also, I could tell they were thrown off we weren't kids when they got closer.

Just happened. Was bombing a hill behind my neighborhood grocery store with my wife and son spotting for cars. 17 -18 year old came out with an attitude kicking me out. Had a strange feeling for a few hours.

This happens all the time. They roll up with attitude, then see gray hair and a full beard and kind of relax.
I'm not sure if it's because of the age thing or because skating is more accepted nowadays; but I've had a lot more luck lately talking them into giving me 5 more minutes. Which turns into 20. Also, (knock on wood) I haven't got a skateboarding ticket in probably 15 years. I got like 6 or 7 of them back in the 90's.

Had this female cop call me a loser for being out skating with all my shop shop kids who are half my age, accused me of being a pedophile. I've definitely caught way more shit from security for being older.

Way back when, we had a steel vert ramp and a 7' bowl.  Being the go getter that I was, I slammed too hard a few times, and would limp through high school for a week.  That really wasn't a good look as skateboarders were already losers back in 89/90.  I cracked the caps of my knee pads, so I ripped off the rest of the plastic and wrapped them around my hips when riding the big stuff.  My ass looked fat but I could blast without fear of hippers.  They fit just fine under my orange Life's A Beach shorts.  Plus I bought new Pro Design knee pads, man those were an upgrade.

^I still have those exact same pads. Actually, I never at any point bought better ones so my late 20s run at trying to skate vert ended rather quickly on account of knee sliding hurting so much.

Saturday morning, I'm digging through my closet, looking for a sheet of grip.
Sunday morning, I'm digging through my closet, looking for my cane.
What a difference a day makes.
Right ankle got rolled big time.
I guess I should consider myself lucky. No slam has taken me out for more than a few days all year. Last major one was my left ankle last December. Took me out for about a month.
Hopefully it will only be a month this time too.

Ice only my man, I promise.
Avoid heat for at least a week. Just keeps it inflamed.
I Ice my ankles all the time, helps speed up recovery after skating all day.
Gotta bring that swelling down, ibuprofen and a diet of anti inflammatory foods will speed up the process.
Good luck!
