How tf is Mike Carroll still ollie'ing huge gaps? He so old. My 30 year old knees can barely take an ollie on flat. Pretty much can't ollie anymore without immediate pain and mental note of: "Yeah let's not do that." 12 months ago I was ollie'ing no problem over sh*t. What happened!!? Each added year takes a giant toll, damn.

So I've been off the board for 3+ weeks because I've been having pain in my knee joints- like they are filled with acid or broken glass.

Finally saw a doctor who said I've got the start of arthritis and cartilage thinning. Also have a torn meniscus and MCL but not bad enough to do anything about. Her advice was exercises and taking it easy when possible.

Bummed that I'm looking forward towards a more painful future and I'm probably going to be skating less - although I think i might get a little session tomorrow.
[close]

I've had meniscus trouble since I was 18 (4 surgeries to date) and my only advice is go biking.
basically my doc told me: don't jog, avoid running, avoid walking too much. Then when I asked can I bike? He said you MUST bike!

Haven't skated in about 6 weeks. Saw an orthopedic and have gotten an MRI. I have a bucket handle meniscus tear. Surgery is an option, but not haven't gotten it yet.

I can roll around and sort of ollie since I am regular and I hurt my left knee again. After getting ACL reconstruction on the same knee in 2006. Haven't tried a kickflip, but when I flex it and extend it, there's some pain. When I bent down and "tried" nollie/switch ollie. My knee tightens up and has little to no feeling.

For now, I just do knee exercises and walk for exercise.

Hell yeah dave! couldn't make it out on my phone screen but it looks good in the bigger window.

That garage TF clip with the no comply onto the steep ramp from the other day got me off my ass and on my board.

That bank is a sign tipped over.
A friend wallied into it years ago and I just randomly ended up trying it and the no comply over and into it worked.

How old is old? Cuz I'm only 28 but my body is old. I gained about 50 lbs when I got clean two years ago, I've torn ligaments in both my ankles, and I have a recurring pinched nerve in my shoulder blade and my pinkie finger has been numb for about 2 weeks. I'm feelin' it and I'm worried life is going to physically suck exponentially over time.

You wanna get that numb pinkie finger checked out stat. Numbness in that side of the hand is your ulnar nerve aka your funny bone. Sounds like it got pinched fer sure but when you have numbness you have a limited window for getting the feeling back (around 6 months.) Worst case scenario they just cut you open and move the nerve over a bit. It's honestly a pretty minor operation. You go under but you're home after it's all over and the recoup time is minimal. I had it done about 7 years ago and I only missed 1 day of work.

Fuck that shit. I'm 40+. I'm not dropping off anything higher than a loading dock and I won't be doing anything that involves a board flipping and shoving down it. Maybe shuv it heelfips because I've never been afraid to get wrecked trying those. Also skating like 20 times a year you only have so much confidence and that is what is needed for any gaps and shit like that. My buddy is like 45 is still has pop. I'm jealous. Must be his martial arts training or something. I never know how my legs will work each time I go out. I have more problems with distances than height now. It's a mind fuck to me. Like ollie a a cone or something a certain height no problem. Make it a bench or something with width the same height I get all sketched out and it's not even much wider lol

gotta give you props again Dave! saturday I managed to land a straight no comply down a curb, a first for me so I was stoked, but doing it on a real stair set seems not easy at all....

also I've been using my Zig Zagger cruiser to go to my coworking place recently and it's so fun. Best way to start the day, it's a 15 min downhill ride from my place, I just have to watch out not to crash with my laptop in my backpack! any of you guys commute with a useless wooden toy?

Yeah, I tried to do the skater/office worker combo once and trashed my laptop. I rolled kinda parallel to a big crack and back wheel caught..

I used to do the skate/tube combo
To work but now I just ride a bike. Two weeks after I got I new laptop I hit a slick patch on the road and went ass over tits with the laptop in my back pack but luckily it's one of those titanium MacBooks and I have a soft case for it so all it got was a little ding on it. Was a little bummed but it could have been much worse.

haha mine were probably 45mm 101. I was using my regular setup for everything so I went proper flying and landed into swimming position with the laptop under my belly (helped me skid a bit longer)

Long time lurker first time poster. 45 turning 46 in a month. Been skating since 1985, died down a little in the 90s after I lost my sponsors and went to art school. Picked it up seriously again in late 90s until the mid 2000s. Last 6 years have been at it again.  Now last month I fell like a stone to my hip and cracked the femural neck at my hip. Basic broken hip and I got three screws. Doctor said today I should never skateboard again. The screws are in for life and if I wreck them I am in trouble.  At the moment I am just working on walking again let alone skating but this was some harsh news. Anyone ever get this sort of advice from a doctor?

Thanks... I just hope I can still do rock and rolls and grinds in a bowl again (me in the IG video) Nothing more than that is needed. I can be chill and stay within my ability.  I think I just have to be more careful and be in touch with my condition physically a little more. I was tired and stiff when I fell so hard. I suppose, In future I have to be more cautious but also more aware of energy levels.I dont want to stop skating bowls!

THIS! Doctors often say that you'll never skate again if you can get your strength back you'll at least be able to roll. If in doubt look at Cardiel for inspiration.

this is hard to answer cause it really depends on the doc. Some doctors think skateboarding is like satan reincarnate, others are more realistic. I think you should talk to him a bit more: can you do other sports still? which ones? If he says you can ski for instance, you can definitely still skate.
all I know is it's next to impossible to skate whithout slamming every now and then. that's my main objective nowadays though: don't fall!

Btw I skated that bowl in your vid! do you live in Belgium or were you traveling? that spot is not an easy one and felt more like a pool to me....props on the rock! all I got was some grinds in the deep    ;-)

Hey dude! Ya was good to see you out there...last March? Raimondo...was that when he hung up on the deathbox at kensington? Yes, I plan to do physio hard. Cycling! I was a bike messenger of and on for years so I still got the bike and equipment. Have been doing some research about my injury on the internet and its good to see other people's recovery stories, etc. I only ever had one catastrophic injury before...when I was 18! Chad Voght and I collided on a  vert ramp in Corvalis, Oregon and I had a tibula fibula fracture. That healed in 5 months and I was skating again. !8 years old you can heal up quick so at my age I realise the stakes are higher and maybe healing a little slower. I am determined to keep skating in any shape form or fashion!

The Doctor is Romanian and I am in Brussels and his english is not that great. I have a buddy come to the appointments with me and he translates a bit. He said I could play soccer again, etc. But no skateboarding, its too dangerous. I don't get that though. Dudes can get fucked up playing soccer!

But yeah, I cannot afford to slam like that again. But I also have to stop skateboarding when I am tired/hungover or have lack of sleep etc. before I broke my hip I was just getting over a tweaked  knee in I got in copenhagen at christiania bowl. Skating with 2 hours sleep and drinking beer in the afternoon. Dumb! When I broke my hip I was tired. I had already had a weird fall earlier in the session. The kind where you crumple up strangely with like zero reaction time. The hip break was similar. Hung up on an axel stall and just fell right to flat, no arms out, no reaction. Maybe this break will force me to study how my body is feeling more. Skateboarding is so physical but its also about so much passion and that balance can get skewed and we end up forgetting to stretch, eat and rest because we just want to do what we love.

Thats sick you came through Belgium! That bowl is in Halle, 7kms down the canal from Brussels. I live in Brussels but am originally from Vancouver, Canada. That bowl was crazy! It had a DIY feel and all the transitions were different. That rock was done in the one sweet spot. Props on your grinds that place was not easy to skate! Did you skate the weird bowl in the centre of Brussels at La Chapelle?

Did you skate the weird bowl in the centre of Brussels at La Chapelle?

dude I live in Brussels too! funny how the internet works....I'm french obviously but I've been living here over 10 years. as for the Chapelle bowl, man that place kicked my ass a few times... when they built it I was like, I'm going to rip this place!! Yeah right. after 3 gnarly slams in there, I've pretty much given up on tricks and just carve around.

Anyways, that's what I thought, the doc probably has no idea what skating is really like. If he says soccer is ok, you can skate for sure. I mean my knees are fucked and soccer/basket ball/tennis/ball sports is a no no for me but I can still somewhat skate and snowboard. (I actually skate a lot less than before cause breaking my tibula 4 years ago at 39, screws and all, really took its toll).

we should have a sesh sometime whenever you're healed! good luck et "bon courage".

That looks like so much fun....your clips are always sick....it's super hard to do two tricks in a row... Especially on film....

well, just do shitty tricks. But in a row.  ;)

spot does look super fun. And it's covered!

Edit: just to clear it up, Dave, I dont mean to imply that your tricks are shitty here, far from from it! I mean I'd rather do easy stuff and cruise than try a hard trick over and over for an hour...
