do you really need wider trucks for a bigger deck
« on: November 23, 2013, 11:51:40 AM »
I moved up to riding an 8.38 deck but I am sill using the trucks from my 8.12 deck. Someone told me that only vert skaters use the wider trucks and if you are skating street to stick to the smaller trucks, I'm not sure what to do. Do street skaters on here ride wider trucks? I have Indy 129s right now on my set up

I think 129s might be too small for an 8.38. Usually I like the hanger width to be very close to the width of the deck. I had 139s with an 8.25 deck and put an extra washer on each wheel the increase the wheelbase although it did alter the turning of the trucks. Unless there is a noticeable turning problem, I don't think you should spend extra money on a new pair of trucks which will also take time to get used to. For the next pair, I think 139s may be a better choice because they are designed for decks 8+. Indy 149s are designed for boards 8.5+ i believe.

It's basically not a problem. You can line the deck with your trucks perfectly if you want to, but riding the trucks smaller isn't much of a big deal. I know Andrew Reynolds rides his tricks a 'size' smaller than his deck.

149s are pretty standard for 8.25 and up. A trick I learned is to hold the axle side of the truck to the top side of the board and if they line up similarly or with some slight overhang from the board, that's a good size.

And please chill out on clogging up the boards with new threads. This question has been answered before, which you can find via the search button.

I ride 139s and enjoy riding different sized boards.  I felt no difference riding 139s on an 8.5, but didn't like how 139's felt on a 8.75 when riding transition.

hope that helps

I ride Thunder 149 on everything from 8.125 - 8.38, and they're still good up to 8.5. I like having the wider hanger for a wider grind area.

All that said, it's all personal preference there are no 'rules'.

yes. 129 are too small for that board but it will only matter if your good. 149s are the best size for that deck but if you are just trying a bigger deck to see if you like it then get 139's so you can still use them if you size back down.

Yeah, I stepped up to 149's when I got my first 8.38.  I hate the feeling of small trucks with a big board.  It was a good investment for me because I started to ride only 8.38 and then I only skate 8.5.  I love my Indy hollow 149's.  They turn super well and are really light.  I'd say get some 149's for sure
the evidence seems to be in the highwaters.

i did 129s on an 8.125 for a while. i liked it for riding around.. felt nice and carve-y and scoopy. good for shuvit-type stuff and shit like that. bad for wheelbite. since bumped up to 139s and enjoy it more, i think. depends how you like to skate i guess

Ace 44 Hi's on everything forever and always. Unless I bump up to a 9, then I'll get some 55s

I invert truck and board size: 8 inch board on 7.25 trucks, 7.5 board on 9 inch trucks.
