Moving to Melbourne. Looking for advice on beer and shredding
« on: November 25, 2013, 02:37:13 AM »
Me and my lady are moving to Australia in mid December to do a working holiday after traveling south east Asia for several months. Trying to stack some cash and get a taste of Australian life before we return home. If anyone has any solid advice on where to skate, see good music, or drink cheap beer let me know. Trying to meet up and cruise around with some locals when I get there. Also i posted on Gumtree looking for a place to crash but if anyone has any room  or knows someone please let me know. Figured I would skip the bullshit and try to get ahold of some other rippers as soon as possible. Email me with advice or anything. Thanks in advance. [email protected]  Also check the moon tower montages on YouTube for some solid Midwest skateboarding.

Check gumtree.com.au for housing/crash pads.
Go to the cricket and get drunk in the sun, it's great!
I will be there for a few weeks over the summer break, will be happy to show you some spots.
Buy yourself a slab of Coopers Pale Ale, an esky and some ice. You're welcome.

Melbourne is a great city man. I guess the inner North is pretty hyped, plenty of nightlife/pubs/shit to do - it can get expensive around Brunswick St/Smith St but places like Brunswick are taking off and rooms can be found for around 150ish/week. Sharehousing can be a a bitch to navigate through though.
Corner Hotel, Northcote Social, Hi-fi and the Espy generally get bigger bands, especially over summer, but theres smaller band venues that do live music every night for free or minimal entry regardless of what you're into. International bands can be pretty expensive (a common theme here) as Australia is so far away and only has 3/4 major cities to play.
Lincoln Plaza, Museum and the City Library for meet-up spots, particularly Lincoln. There's a bunch of skateparks around, easily accessible by train/tram. I've been loving St. Kilda, it's new, plenty of flow and is right on the beach so it's got a sick vibe.
But yeah, start earning Oz dollars and you'll be sweet. I'll be around over summer, and generally always down for a cold one.

Skate Riverside(city park) and Lincoln a lot and meet some people/make some friends. Famous spots are literally everywhere, but it would help having someone to help you around!

There are heaps of smaller bars/venues around the Fitzroy/Collingwood/Prahran areas too, there's a lot of night life I guess...

Me and my girl flew in the other day and we're staying at a hotel right now, but we want to get an apartment or room asap since we're going to be here for a couple of months.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas or friends who might know something?

We've tried the gumtree website but without luck. Are there any other websites we should look at?

Any help would be appreciated!

My aussie friend told me to never order a Fosters in a pub/bar. Basically slapping a big foreigner sticker on your forehead without even talking. No one drinks that shit there.

it's been years since i was in melbourne, but beer wise:
feral hop hog is a decent enough ipa
stone & wood pacific ale is the shit. i could drink it all day every day
little creatures pale ale isn't bad either. it probably most resembles sierra nevada pale.

They don't even serve that swill in bars. It's strictly for sale to foreigners.

Melbourne is damn expensive so where ever you're coming from you might want to bring some boards and shoes with you. Drinking in bars is expensive so your best off drinking before going out. All the places mentioned around Brunswick St Fitzroy are really popular to live in but again, pricey, as is St Kilda and every inner city area in between the two. A bit further out from Fitroy is Northcote where you can probably find a place to rent or share and not be too far out.

Skating wise you really don't have to look to hard for spots and if you turn up to Lincoln or Riverside you'll meet people. Just keep turning up and before you know it you'll find a crew to skate with.
