8.38 & 8.5
« on: December 14, 2013, 02:03:09 AM »
I've been looking to setup a complete just for stairs/transition. I already got some Indy 149's, but I don't know if I should get an 8.38, or an 8.5? Is it a noticeable difference? I don't want it to be too wide, seeing as how I wear a size 9, but I don't know if an 8.38 is wide enough for stairs/transition. Every 8.4 I've found has too short of a wheelbase, so that's out of the question.
This has me cracking up, what exactly does Black Flag have to do with measuring your dick starting behind ya nuts?

Skateboarding is nothing but a game to find the right fits to appear like you're a proportional human being instead of a midget or a giant.

Shit I skate a ton of stairs on an 8.25 in a size 10 & it's the perfect fit for me. I'd say just start off small just to make fliptricks that much easier & if you feel you need more room then just step it up tr next time you get a new deck

I don't know what 8.38 shape you're looking at, but I know the deluxe 8.38 x 32.56 is actually shorter than the dimensions say.  I think it's right around 32 in length.  However the 8.43 x 32.56 shape is spot on and it's got a really good wheelbase at right under 14.75.  There's not that much of a difference between a 8.38 and 8.5 but it's noticeable when flicking and stuff.  I think wheelbase plays a bigger role when the difference in width is so small.  But anyways I think 8.38 is big enough for transition and whatnot.  In my opinion, 8.5 feels better but I have size 13 boats so you know..

Currently skating an 8.475 baker (the B16 shape) and it's one of the better boards I've skated lately. At first I didn't really like it, but after I got used to it  I'm really diggin it now. It's a lot shorter than a lot of other 8.5's I've ridden, so it was hard to get used to at first.

I've skated the 8.38x32.56 dlx shape on an anti hero and its really good.  I highly recommend it.  the 8.5x32.18 is too short for me.  I have really long legs and big feet so I'm gonna get the 8.62x32.56 shape and see how it goes.  I bought the 8.75x32.75 shape but I'm gonna return it because its a tad too big.  Get an Anti Hero they have a wide variety of bigger shapes.
the evidence seems to be in the highwaters.

Anti Hero makes an 8.4 x 32 now that seems just about perfect. I'm riding an 8.4 x 32.25 Polar now and it's a little too long for my liking. I had an 8.6 x 32.5 Welcome Squidbeak too - and that thing felt good in bowls and transition, but was kind of a boat to fuck around when trying to skate street.

I find when the length is 32 it helps placement on the coping to be stable and grind my trucks - but that's just me (I'm 6 foot, 200 lbs and have a size 10 foot for reference).

And don't sweat all the sizes - that's just alotta "marketing" from what I've heard. The only real differences are when you go up .25, say from an 8.25 to 8.5

Just my two cents.

Shit, try the 8.5, when it breaks buy 8.38, when it breaks buy whatever one you liked better.

I have size 8 feet and skate a 8.5
I have actually learned new flip tricks after stepping up to 8.5, and have not lost any either.

Its just a matter of getting used to it.

i disagree, i just switched from 8.25 to 8.12 and it feels way more comfortable for me. then again, the 8.12 is an inch shorter because at 8.25 x 32.25 long i had such little board control

I have skated pretty much every size from an 8-8.5. I like the 8.5 alot but it will mess with your flat ground game some because it flips so slow, but there is def a difference. I just switched from an 8.25 to an 8.2 and I can tell a difference but thats just me.

I know what you mean - you can't propel/push the board as much when it goes over 32, or you can't pop it where you normally would. I upped my wheel size to 56 and threw some 1/8' risers on my 149's - but I think I'm going to take the risers off because I can't pop the board for shit now...been skating the bowl at second nature In Peekskill this winter, so it's been good to mess around with my set up and see what works and what doesn't. My trucks are fucking shot too...

I heard that about Deluxe boards - that their 8.38, 8.43, and 8.5 are only different from one another in length and they're actually all the same width. Not sure how true it is though, never tested it, but I will say I've been able to transition from 8.38 to 8.43 to 8.5 Deluxe boards and back without much adjustment period. Probably because it's really just not a very big difference.

I skate 7.75 for everything.
I'm seriously considering going sub 8 next board. It's good to try different things.

exactly! my flatground was never so terrible. the 8.38 x 31.75 politic i had worked WAY better for me than that longer board. im guessing because it had a smaller wheelbase as well. (the longer board was 14.25) i feel like by sticking at 8.12 ill be able to get the perfect wheelbase and length more often, and i like the width better than 8.25 now.  FRACTIONS OF INCHES MAKE A DIFFERENCE
