What an excellent history lesson. Thanks for that.

His skateboarding is one thing, but are some of you really going to defend the guy's character? Becoming "born again" is hardly a free pass. Will we look back at Gator with such affection?

People giving their respects to his passing has nothing to do with promoting his beliefs. Regardless if he took on the role or not, he was very influential in the skate culture. I think that is more or less what people want to remember and acknowledge. No one is saying he's a perfect guy but bringing up his negatives in light of passing just seems kin d of fucked up. Like Dirtymac said above, we've all have had bad intentions one way or another and would want someone to bring it out after they are dead.

I know this is hard for some of you to believe but not too far in the past everyone bagged on gay people. It was the norm. Not saying it was right but general acceptance of homosexuality is a relatively new concept in this world. Jay or anyone else in that situation would have maybe gotten their ass kicked or even killed for not going along. As I've gotten older I've learned to generally accept anyone who isn't directly harming or affecting me in any negative way regardless of their race, sexual orientation etc. but I guarentee there's not a guy on here my age who hasn't at one time or another in their past ridiculed, made fun of or even just joked about gay people. Unless they happen to be gay that is...

this is true, and it's actually somewhat relevant.  however let me preface this does not EXCUSE JAY'S PAST VIOLENT ACTIONS.

But yeah, at the time, it was generally acceptable to make fun and humiliate gays.  Hell, even a lot of punk rock/hardcore with it's anti-right/anti-reagan liberal ranting would bash the oppressive christian right and make fun of "faggots" in the same sentence.  In retrospect it was incredibly stupid (and ironic... darby crash?), but it was the norm.

Again, THIS IS NOT MAKING EXCUSES FOR JAY'S PAST VIOLENT ACTIONS, just saying that at certain times and places people's thought process was different.

Also noticed MOFO was holding it down in the comment section

When my boi Luka Magnotta is dead and gone I'll just choose to remember the good. He had a deece cock, a tight haircut and cool taste in music. I won't do him and the gay porn community the disservice of remembering that he raped a dude with a wine bottle after cutting his head off and filmed it on a webcam. We've all wanted to commit necrocanibalistic acts on shy Asian students. Don't you dare hold me accountable for my actions.

Yes because punching some guy in the face a couple times is the same as raping and dismembering a dead body and sending the head to an elementary school. You're a fucking moron. Luka was fucking sick in the head. Jay just wasn't fond of gay people and who wasn't in the 80s AIDS breakout.

I took the flawed logic to an absurd extreme you twat. The point holds. Not all stories have happy endings. We don't need to edit history so that people feel good.

Why does the point hold? Because you say so? Nobody is editing history. REAL fans of Jay Adams know what he did. Most people were just kids that were reposting shit on Instagram and don't have a fucking clue who Jay Adams was.

I met this old born again christian who lynched a black guy once. But I know this is hard for some of you to believe but not too far in the past everyone bagged on black people. It was the norm. I don't think Jay was in the spot where he was really trippin on what people said. He seemed to be above that type nonsense That's not what I was insinuating. A lot of time has past since that stuff happened. I am not supporting physical acts of violence, either. I just think it's really bad taste to put out an article like that, especially if I don't think the writer would have said those things in person or written something like that if Jayboy was alive.

What? That gays were less accepted in mainstream society in the late 70's/early 80's?It's a perfectly reasonable and accurate statement. So fuck me I guess.
