10 years ago pros would say that's the way to prevent flatspots, kind of how it's good to keep your batteries in the fridge. Something about cold makes things last longer

Is there any truth to this method? Realistic or scientific?

Of course !!  It helps everything - even shoes, which is why sneakerheads say they got rare or collectible shoes ''on ice'' because they literally have them in the freezer.
