If you read Blood Meridian, Ben Nichols(Lucero) did an ep based on the book. It's really good.

Nice, Saw him live for the first time a couple of weeks ago here in London.  Great performer and seems like a down to earth dude.

i feel like this is a cliche answer but personally just a fan of old country/honky tonk/rockabilly.  some of my favorites:

Hank Williams - Why Donīt You Love Me

Charlie Feathers - Can't Hardly Stand It

CARL PERKINS drink up and go home 56/57

Porter Wagoner - The Rubber Room

WYNN STEWART - Wishful Thinking (1959)

a couple of more modern (well, 80's and 90's) bands I dig:

Texas Funeral - Jon Wayne
their album Texas Funeral is classic)

DM Bob & the Deficit - Bad with wimen

also if you've never heard this amazing compilation, you're truly missing out:

with this amazing song:
Troy Hess - Don't Go Topless Mother

One could also bring up Johnny Rebel, but for obvious reasons I'll let somebody else put up the links

It weren't for GP, Burritos, and Sweetheart of the Rodeo I probably wouldn't ever have been interested. Mostly listen to Waylon these days but this was one of the first country tunes I was into:

Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs [Full Album]
Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs

Lee Hazlewood-Back On The Street Again
Lee Hazelwood - Back On The Street Again

Errrr, drawing some blanks; too much isopropyl & perfume in the afternoon...

Pre-80's (with a few exceptions) country is keen, amazing music; history & the representation of morays in rapidly accelerating world.

Would thoroughly enjoy exploring some really vintage stuff (pre-1950's if even existent), as alas this is one foray I have not delved too deep.
Roll for Rusty, Frip, Dapple and Tate

Ross Norman - Last of the Mohicans

Eddie Noack's "Psycho" has been on every country tape I've ever made for people who ask me what good country is.
Also STOKED to see people mention DM Bob and Jon Wayne.

I don't know how to embed video, but here are some good ones:

Sanford Clark "They Call Me Country" the entire album is incredible
http://youtu.be/qH3J6Tum1Ws
The "hit" that most people know from God Less America is on it. This song has really blown up over the last 5 years or so, and rightly so:

Johnny Darrell "Mental Revenge"

Carl Butler "Wonder Drug"

Early George Jones "Revenooer Man"
http://youtu.be/m2wX1FLEPZk

Arkey Blue "Living on Credit"

Buck Owens is the greatest country singer to ever live:

A+ on every one of those links... that Sanford Clark album is fantastic.

Also awesome to hear other people love Jon Wayne as much as I, Texas Funeral is one of my all time favorite albums.  Fucked up county at it's finest.  Also love the mystique that it had for many years, until people found out who made it.  Rest in Peace David Vaught.

Mr. Egyptian
Texas Oil

great live show (this might've been their only live show?):
Jon Wayne live at Emo's in Austin, Texas (2001)

(btw if anybody has their second album, Two Graduated Jiggers, and can send me a link, i'll donate my kidneys)

Yeah, the mystery surrounding it was really awesome. People thought it was members of Butthole Surfers, and even Rodney Crowell (although that may have some truth behind it?).

I have the second record somewhere, it's really nothing compared to Texas Funeral. Kind of experimental and obnoxious. If I can find it I'll let you know.

Yeah for the longest time a good friend mine, who was an older guy from the Austin scene, swore up and down that it was Gibby and a few of the other Surfers, fucked up just doing a one off country album.  Pretty rad that Jack White of all people recently reissued it on his own label.. that record is just too awesome.

I've heard some of the tracks from the second LP and even though it's totally different I like it a lot.. definitely more experimental and Butthole Surfers-ish.  I would be forever grateful for a download link!!
