the older i get, the more i appreciate music that is quintessentially american.  big fan of ~60s country,
buck owens, charley pride, marty robbins.  but i really like country-tinged rock n roll, like NRPS, Flying
Burrito Brothers, early Dead, Byrds, Neil Young (harvest/harvest moon) etc.  i play in country bands too.

lately, this has been on repeat in the car:

Any of you guys ever listen to GG Allin's country stuff? I had one of his country albums when I was in middle school and didn't get into it. Checking it out now, kinda cool if you're into that classic outlaw country with the GG spin on it.

If you aren't already aware of them, you might want to check out Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen.

I haven't thought about this band in about 3 years and just remembered them today. Fred and Toody  from Dead Moon. I've never liked Dead Moon's music, but Range Rats are pretty much what I've always wanted Dead Moon to sound like.

Bet you fuck with The Band then! Did ya know that the lyrics "Cripple Creek" was taken from a bluegrass classic?

whoa, fuck yeah that's right up my alley, thanks for that. I just started playing pedal steel so I need to study bands like this to get my chops up.

damn straight I fuck with The Band. didn't know that about Cripple Creek, interesting. I actually visited Big Pink a few years ago while passing through Saugerties, NY. looked exactly the same as the album back cover, which was heartwarming.

The Band is the shit, those guys (and Neil Young) make me feel alright about being from Ontario.

Yep. The Band and The Grateful Dead are filled with little "throwbacks" to the OG country, bluegrass, and blues dudes. The song "Deal" by tGD is a throwback to this Charlie Poole number.

Although considered more straight up rockabilly, West Virginian madman Hasil Adkins released an album called 'Moon Over Madison' which is mostly slow weepy rockabilly/country songs and it straight up rules.  I'm sure most of you know him but if not, GET ON IT

Anyone into Sturgill Simpson? Yeah, I know he's for cool dads who listen to like, Wilco and wear corduroy jackets. I dig his stuff though and find myself listening to him pretty often. I heard this song on the radio and was immediately stoked:

i appreciate modern guys like this that write back-to-the-basics tunes.  my bass player showed me this guy, i like him.  also, i find myself liking jeff tweedy more and more now that i'm pushing 30.  i like country-ish wilco for sure.

^Yes, Steve Earl had some really good stuff in the movie. Here's Mercenary Song. I fixed the link up there so you can see a full scene without renting.

I randomly saw Terry Allen walking through campus a couple weeks ago. I kind of regret not saying anything.

Got around to uploading a couple songs I couldn't find on YouTube:

Johnny Dollar - Do Die

Beautiful fuzz guitar

Ferlin Husky - I'll Sail My Ship Alone

The reverb...

Dave Berry - Go On Home

(yeah, not actually country, but it's a Sanford Clark song... and that fuzz) I might have already posted this one

I got a million country songs to rip from vinyl if I ever have free time again.
