"The 90s were arguably the purest time period for skateboard videos. The campy, day-glo, skit-filled vert videos of the 80s had given way to raw street skating spliced with irreverent behavior and scored with edgy hip-hop. By the mid 90s consumer video cameras had shrunk to palm-sized and become somewhat affordable, leading to an explosion of amateur footage. Suddenly it seemed as if every kid in every town across America was filming his scene and his crew's antics. The videos reflected just how small and insular skateboarding was at the time."

He's full of shit and everyone is gonna be like the skate turds in KIDS except worse because they can't get actual experience. Fuck denim dude he's just making shit soft and when shitty rap music has its teeth in it now there is nothing less. He can Larry Clark it or Harmony Korine it all he wants, but people have moved on. As they should skateboarding is on the decline, just deal.

I have no idea why this person is so fascinated with repeatedly snapping portraits of people in front of a vignetted photo of his own possessions on a shelf.

This only served to remind me that I so miss the campy, day-glo, skit-filled 80s.

Don't get the hate. He's letting these kids be themselves and putting out great skate videos, for free more often than not. And "golden era" was exactly that to everyone in that age bracket.

While he's concerned with regressing there are a ton of people creating a new 'golden era.'

Dime
Sabotage
GX1000
The crew that put out Beef Patty, Paych, and countless other videos and clips
Bronze
Josh Stewart and co. are always doing cool things
Chris Mulhern is a genius
Polar, Hopps, Magenta always put out memorable, interesting stuff
There have been a handful of sick videos out of Virginia in the past few years..

And that's just on the East Coast.

I really liked how they talked about these no personality skaters that these big name companies try so hard to market and still no one buys their pro models.

Seriously. Are there any good skate companies that refrain from using nostalgia as a marketing tool/aesthetic?

Most companies who represent what I view as the good side of skateboarding tap into the mindset or feeling you had when you first started skating, how fun/new/irreverent/whatever it was, so I'd say...No? At least not the companies that make skateboards.

I don't have a vast knowledge of art, design or advertising history, but Isle seems to be on their own path visually speaking.

This is silly. If he wants videos to be like the 90's, he should focus on what really made those videos good...the skateboarding. Tim and Henry Pack of Lies (probably my favorite 90's video) was good not because it was "raw" and "pure." It was because Henry set the standard for street skating for years after that part. 90's videos were very progressive in regards to tricks and no amount VX filming of dudes pushing down the street is going to recreate that.

Even Eastern Exposure was very new when it came to tricks. That wasn't some video trying to represent an earlier time. Even what was seen in Eastern Exposure didn't dominate most of the 90's in terms of imitation. Don't forget that this decade also produced Hocus Pocus, Video Days, Love Child, 20 Shot, Trilogy, Rodney v. Daewon, Questionable, Virtual Reality, Second Hand Smoke, numerous 411's, Photosynthesis, Welcome To Hell, Jump Off a Building, etc. All of which were well produced videos trying to set new standards instead of imitating old ones.

i just read it and what i got from it was the interviewer was the person that brought up the 90's..the only thing Strobeck said that had to do with that time was that the length of Cherry was to be like tim and henrys.you guys got it wrong, seems like hes talking about the energy of those times is what he thinks skateboarding is lagging.look at the Stereo sounds video a visual sound, those guys were doing simple stuff but with good style and i think unique.

his fetishized nostalgia for that era of skateboarding has become so stale, he has trouble innovating so he has to resort to mimicking. get a fucking grip, strobeck.  he and jason dill get away with so much.

And I'm not a fan of how the intro was written. This thing about Cherry being like "Eastern Exposure Era videos"? Outside of maybe the Sub Zero video there were no Eastern Exposure type videos...there was only Eastern Exposure. That video did bring skateboarding back to a good medium (skating faster and getting wheel sizes back up), but I would say that Hocus Pocus or Questionable had a bigger influence on the whole decade. I love the past but damn, let it go sometimes.

And of course it's easy to look back at the past to see the energy of those times when you're facing your inevitable demise as an adult now. Everything looks so fun and energetic because everybody was young and stupid.

He says a little more than that, but for real, read closer and don't make a negative opinion based on the clickbait title.

Regarding nostalgia, it doesn't have to be a dichotomy of biting old shit vs. aggressive progression. Stuff like the Bronze and Strobeck vids are rad because they take influence from the past to do something new. One step back, two steps forward.
