Skate-Friendly Neighborhoods in HK, Guangzhou or Taipei
« on: August 05, 2015, 01:13:52 PM »
Curious what, if any skate-friendly neighborhoods their are in these, cities.

By, Skate-Friendly I mean:

-Can throw your board down and cruise right out of your building
-Local shop
-Able to push down the road/sidewalk without too much congestion or police interference, IE. cruisin ,Beer or food missions
-Nice plaza or chill park

Some areas of Taipei look pretty neat to skate through. Been eye-ing Kowloon as well, seems less congested than HK Island.

I'd say the best areas to be for skating would be near Tung Chung or Fan Ling, which have the best parks. I usually carry my board in a sling and cruise around on a Zip Zinger. In places like Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui, you have to really skate on the roads with the cars and some parts you will eat shit without bigger soft wheels. The police vary. Most leave you alone but just yesterday some hard ass stopped me trying to skate through from Central station to Hong Kong. I was polite and explained I was rushing for a ferry. I'm not sure what the laws are here, like in Japan or even the UK. If you need any more info, let me know, I'll try and help.

Ahh cool! thanks man! much appreciated, got some google earthing to do. I like your thinking on the Zinger as well, seems a lot of HK has the really loud square tile sidewalks that drive people nuts when your rollin with hard wheels.

Are you thinking of moving here or just for a trip?

Because the Central areas have crazy rent (probably the most expensive in the world).

It isn't really a noise problem, more a volume of people problem. Kind of like trying to skate through Center Gai in Shibuya. On the roads you don't want to be doing it on small hard wheels that will throw you when you hit a pebble/rough patch in traffic.

The cruiser makes the most sense to me. I'm old and need to preserve my knees.

PM me if you need any other help. I'm far from a native but can give you some ideas.

(also, tell me you pm ed me in tis thread, I never check that shit!)

To move, it's my top choice as far as Asia goes(inspired by my studies of Chinese migration), the company I did(still doing the online component) my TEFL through here has a placement service as part of the deal, has links to some schools and opportunities in HK. I'm trying to narrow down my choices to some suitable neighborhoods in a few cities, and seeing what offers i can get which would allow to live in a part of a city I would enjoy(skating is a big part of this), without too much hassle as far as commuting, though i don't mind a fair amount. Again Thanks!

Yeah, it's probably the best park here. Nearly always empty too. It is really fun to skate. TKO is newer but not as good... Tung Chung is also really good. Small but with a lot of character and empty a lot too.

All made by Convic (Australia) although I heard TKO was finished by local workers and it shows a little!

They also have a huge pool (at TKO) which they won't let anyone skate! For demonstrations only!!! It is probably worth more than you can imagine.

Had a ball in this part of Southern China/HK. As  for spots, HK was the best for just cruising and getting around, the rest of it we just had pictures and badly written instructions of spots we handed to cab drivers.

We managed to put this together...
