Protecting your phone while skating?

How do people prevent damaging their phones while skating? I used to never skate with my phone, but now I'm so damn dependent on it, I know it's not really possible any longer.

I currently don't use a case for my iphone6, and wear it in front-right pocket. Has anyone damaged their phone while skating when it's in your front pocket? If so, what happened? Would a case have prevented the damage?

Seriously. Leave it in the car or your backpack. I have the 6 as well with an otterbox on it, its huge, wouldn't want to skate with it in any pocket.

The only people I see skating with their phones are young spoiled kids whose parents will buy them a new one when it inevitably gets destroyed.

I hold it above my head with a straight arm to get the best angle on my clips.
