the Microphone is much different. Maybe the new Mic has been real-world applications but for skateboarding those high-ends really pick up on the vx1000.. popping, grinding sound so good.

I always thought the vx2100 looked really digital. Vx1000 almost looks like film compared to today's cameras.

the mk2 fisheye isn't nearly as good, which is the lens that fits the bayo mount on the vx2100.

I don't believe you can mount a mk1 fisheye to it unless you physically cut the bayonet mount on the fisheye to the vx2100 specs, which is pretty much ruining the value of your mk1 if you ever wanted to sell it. The nice part about buying the vx1000 / mk1 set up is that you can eventually sell it for nearly the same price you bought it. It's like having a free camera for as long as you want... if you take care of it.

There's a company that makes an adapter for the mk1 to fit on the VX2_00. http://www.bayorings.com/index.php/online-shop/vx2k-bayoring.html

If you do go VX2000/2100 route I'd suggest getting an Opteka Ultra Fisheye lens

Lol no

I have both,  vx1000 does have better colours but after messing with the vx2100 i was able to make it look just as sick, as well as being able to film better at night, i also bought a mic for my 2100. If i could only chose one i choose 2100 because of night filming, but a 1000 with mk1 is right behind it.

Somewhat dated thread but as a former VX1k, VX2.1k and DVX100 owner I feel inclined to comment  :D

The warm tones, sound, and classic vig of the VX1k / MK1 combo has made an unmistakeable place in skateboarding history.

The biggest upside to the VX2/21 would be the low-light capability IMO.

Personally, it would be hard not to go with a VX1 for pure nostalgia but realistically, if planning on filming in low-light and night I'd probably opt for the VX2/21.

Anyone ever own the little brother TRV-900? ;D

a friend of mine used to rock the trv-900 century baby death combo. it was a decent setup. made quality clips. the only downside was the lack of a handle and no external mic. but the footage looked amazing and really similar to the vx1k.

I own 2 and both are sitting in my closet collecting dust. Used them around 2002-2004 and again around 2006. It is a good camera. Colors similar to a 1000 and I always felt it performed better at night.

About the Japanese VX1K, what are the real differences in all the versions? The euro, Japanese and American? Is there any benefits to any of them?

Japanese has a widescreen format option. US version does not. Other than that, they are the same.

Euro is in PAL format (lines of resolution are vertical instead of horizontal). Simplest analogy I can come up with is it records in a different "language". Google "PAL vs NTSC" and I'm sure you will figure it out.

So that means the Japanese VX records in 16:9 if you want it to? Does that make any big difference or are those two version almost the same? I'm just buying a VX this summer and want to be sure I got the best with my money.

When I was a teenager Transworld published an article matching up the VX1000 versus the VX2000 and dubbed the 2000 the winner, so I went with one of those.

I ultimately regret never getting a VX1000 MK1 setup.

I originally had an Opteka lens but then bought an MKII thinking it was an upgrade. The depth of field isn't even close to the VXMK1, there's no vignetting.
Are you me? Haha

I read the same article and one of the filmers (Dan Wolfe?) said that he preferred the PD-150, which is the "professional" version of the VX2000. So I got a PD-150. It's been a good camera, but I wish I went with the VX1/MK1 combo. I have an MK2 but it's not even close.

I prefer shooting long lens with my camera though. It has variable zoom, which means that if you press down harder on the zoom button, you zoom faster. The VX1 doesn't have this I believe.

One thing that's kind of annoying is no one knows what a PD-150 is so when people ask what I film with and I tell them a PD-150, people tend to assume it's like a VX knockoff or something. Nowadays I just tell people I have a VX 2 haha.

Yes, the Japanese records in both 4:3 and 16:9. The US version records only in 4:3. Does it make a big difference? Well, decide whether or not you want to record in 16:9. I have owned 3 Japanese VXs and have never even bothered to switch this feature on to be honest, because I don't see the need to shoot SD in 16:9.

In total, I have probably owned 7 VX1s over the last 15 or so years. The best ones I have ever had are from ebay user mullermanjr. He rebuilds them and you can just tell how good the quality is. When you use a VX1 vs a VX2 or VX21, you will notice the VX1 just sounds clunky and fragile. It's an older model camera. The VX1s I have gotten from mullermanjr sound so much more solid than your average VX1 because he trolls through the internals and ensures everything is tight and well put together.

Hell yeah! Thanks for that, a lot his prices seem lower than what many of the ebay guys sell it for. I guess all I have to do is wait for him to get an "excellent" condition camera and buy one. Thanks for the help man.
