Because I'm going to Bogota, Colombia mid February.
That couchsurfing app has kind of gone to shit since it got bought it. In the beginning, I'd say it was mostly hippie vibes you'd have to scroll through before you'd find a cool person to PM about crashing their couch. When it changed ownership all they cared about was getting more users so for a bit it seemed like the marketing was actually towards those bros. Either purposely or inadvertently these guys took it as, "BRO SICK WAY TO BANG FOREIGN CHICKS BRO!". There's still cool people on there but, like me, most of them seem to not give two shits anymore about the site so messages get lost most of the time. Along with the bros also came people who just want a place to crash, message you, but have nothing at all in common with you or want to hang out. Just search some keywords, best thing to do. I've had luck with crashing with skateboarders through SLAP more than elsewhere honestly.
Those CS events can be fun too - almost all cities have a weekly bar meet up. However, since the change and depending on the city, there's like a 70% chance it may be all old dudes and bros and 3 girls.
