My feet were still growing, so I had to retire these quite soon.  :( Really liked the shoe, had no idea who Josh Kalis was.

My first ever skate shoe was British Knights, but the first 'real' skate shoe was Globe Focus SWYD.
I even bought another Focus with different design afterwards as my next shoe, the tongue was so nicely padded that I never hurt my feet while skating or get hit with my board. I wouldn't mind having a pair nowadays. I remember other kids at school thought I had the sickest shoes because it had naked boobs on them.

Almost certainly picked due to having swords on them:

My first legit skate shoes were close to those but peace signs. Grade 8 so that would be 87/88. I'm shocked I was able to find an image of them.

You skated Airwalks for 10 years? Cuz those Ipaths are from like '06 at the earliest.

I have a left Heretic 2 under my bed. Found them in a closet four years ago when I started skating again.

Shoes seemed to last forever when I was a kid, maybe cuz my flick was weaker.

This exact colorway, I have the best memories of these shoes. I probably had more ducktape than shoe on my feet at one point of life of these.

I'm curious what influenced your choice of the shoe? Design, brand, skater?

DC was the only skate shoe brand I knew, so I went to shop which sold DC's only. I had a choice between Dyrdek or Kalis shoe, wasn't feeling the Dyrdek so I went with Kalis, and I'm glad I did. I still have the pair stashed in my parents house.

I remember buying and skating 2 pairs of the black/gum ones. They did last for a while, could be that ahead-of-the-game rubber toe piece.

Whoa, my timeline is all fucked up. I was 19 in 2006 and there's no way that gap makes sense. I thought those were from like 2003, but even that is late.  I skated a lot of stan smiths and some converse basketball shoes for a long time, but definitely not past 2001. I had a pair of Lakai Worthys (that was a design, right?) which could have been '01. Maybe those were the next skate-specific shoe I had.  I had at least 2 pairs of Lakai Kingstons, which I guess were '02 then? I'm feeling old because I can't remember years. Help me out here, people

Pretty sure the first ones were Vans Wallys that I got for cheap at an outlet store, because I got them like five years after they first came out. Loved them.

At least they were fucking tanks back then.  I could not imagine having my mom pay some of the prices I've paid for the super minimalist shoes I skated for a few years that lasted ~15-20 hours.  Even $65-70 would be too much to admit to them.

These were mine:

I skated some Sears Vans before then but these were the first shoes I bought form a shop with the intention of skating them.  It was the end of seventh grade so 2002 I believe?

Would've been right around 2000. I've always been impressed how long Phelps still had them.

Would've been right around 2000. I've always been impressed how long Phelps still had them.

I saw him at the townpark in Oakland in 2011 and asked him about the shoes cause he had em on. He told me Emerica made him a few pairs when they were rereleased as the OG model not MJ. He even had a custom Phelper tongue emblem.
