I was working for a shop a long time ago during a Zero tour, around the time Mystery was being introduced.  We had the line start outside of the shop and would let kids in once the team got in and situated.  There were about 10 of us in the shop.  Jamie was the first to come in and for some reason I thought it would be funny to run in front of everyone, put my hand on my forehead, gasp "Jamie!" and pretend to faint.  Being new, young and dumb, I knew this was my chance to shine among my coworkers.  Wrong.  Instant cringe.  By the way, I'm a huge Jamie Thomas fan then and now.  The owner was pissed and I don't even know if Jamie even saw.  I was made to ride in the van to give directions to the demo as some form of punishment.  I couldn't have been more stoked.   The best part was they gave me a Mystery shirt in the van and I immediately put it on.  When the vans rolled up to the park they were mobbed by the kids.  I got out of the van wearing my shirt and everyone thought I was on Mystery.. It rained that day so no one skated....

zero boards with better wood now?  sounds good, good luck man

I feel we are all forgetting Zero was one of the first companies to leave America and start producing in Mexico. Zero has produced sub-par boards for over a decade (not just since 2014 when Thomas moved Zero over to Dwindle). While Powell was the first skate company to really try to start producing outside of the States (1980s - China), Thomas and Mangum--along with the guys at Dwindle--help set the trend of non-American/Canadian made boards when it came to "new-school" skateboarding. (Note: According to Transworld Business, in 2004, the guys working at Thomas's factory in Mexico were making 45-55 dollars a week.)

My impression is that Thomas has sought out lower cost rather than quality for quite some time now and that along with skateboarding's continued decline in popularity, and the coming of new trends make it difficult for Zero to be the same company it was in 2002. We could also argue about brand image, marketing strategy, and various rumors but that would take us no where.

However, the key issue isn't just Thomas's pursuit of lower-costs (nor is he alone in this business model), we also need to look at our desire for cheap consumer goods, and the shop's need to produce some profit to stay in business. It is amazing how little those of us in the US are willing to pay for a our skate goods. Moreover, it is good to remember that the board wars of 2001-2006 weren't just blanks vs pro boards, it was shop boards vs blanks vs pro boards. What is more important supporting the local shop or supporting the pro company? If we didn't expect pro-boards with grip to cost $45 maybe we could do both at the same time.

way to waste your one question to the chief!
dear jamie, we have a saying here 'as jt's hairline goes, so goes central mass'. our economy was set to tank 21 yrs ago when you showed recession but then every video part your hairline and by extension, our economy bounced back. the bush yrs were lean yrs but your mane was strong under obama's first 4 yrs. last 4, haven't been super hot.
how have you maintained hair when it looked like you were going marc johnson way back yet every yr you held on by force of will? is going bald a choice? can you retain your follicles through sheer ferocity of spirit? jean-paul sartre said 'after a certain age a man is responsible for how his face looks'.

Chief, I'm not going to make a new thread asking for anything, but here's your opportunity to (maybe) sell me something. Since this thread became somewhat of an AMA and all. I saw an old Rattray deck for sale, one with a big blue gorilla looking all shook. The price is kinda OK, it's a bit too narrow for my 149 trucks, but I'd like to think that, somehow, I'm buying something from one of the all-time greats and a fellow PAL, so I'm torn. Should I bite the bullet and buy it? Best regards.

Iceman, let's see if I can convince you that participation and interest in skateboarding has significantly declined from the boom of the early 2000's.

First, a quick search on Google Trends indicates that "skateboarding" and "skateboard" are being searched significantly less often that they had in the past. While this is not a direct indicator of participation, it is probably good enough for the slap forum. (Excuse the Russian.)

Second, at IASC's 2016 Skate Retailing Summit summary stated, "many retailers openly admitted they have seen a decline in young skaters at their shops." Once again not a direct indicator of participation but then again it is yet another piece of evidence that skateboarding is declining among a key market that we need to keep it going. http://www.grindtv.com/transworld-business/news/skate-summit-2016-top-takeaways/

Third, Statista.com claims there were 10.13 million skaters in the US in 2006 and now we are at 6.44. However, since this is pay-for-play website and they don't explain their methods we can't fully trust this data.  https://www.statista.com/statistics/191308/participants-in-skateboarding-in-the-us-since-2006/

If you have evidence that this "shit's exploding," I'd like to see it and really I'd like you to prove me wrong. My town needs to rehab its park and if I can provide strong evidence that skateboarding is exploding, maybe that'll increase the chances of them fixing the park.

Modify: Typo and added missing link.

Also, IASC's numbers point to an overall decline see http://www.grindtv.com/transworld-business/features/the-state-of-skate-2016/.

Send me a board Jamie, you fuckin hoarder.

[close]

Why are all those boards on blankets? What's wrong with the ground? I understand not wanting to scratch up the graphics, but boards face up on asphalt temporarily is pretty safe. I do it all the time for product shots for the shop.

Also where did all those blankets come from? Did you buy them just to take this photo?

This photo poses so many questions for me.

I'm pretty sure I see a black fitted sheet, black flat sheet, a couple of quilts, and maybe a duvet cover under those boards.

Chief, did you just unmake your bed to flex on us with your almighty wood?

A post in the Embarrassment Thread reminded me that one time I was having anal sex with an Asian girl and things got a little messy down there and I got shit all over my dick. I was really bummed about it the time but after reading this thread perhaps it was a customary sign of affection?

The only girls you could backdoor and not get an elf shoe (shit on your dick) are porno girls. Watson you and I are similar in a lot of these matters I feel, so don't you sit there and tell me you were bothered for more than 3 seconds by it.

Elf Shoe, that's a new one.
Like, if it's a pre-meditated hook up, it's not hard to do an enema and make sure you're in the clear. Maybe it's more common among gays, but since anal is more of a special event for straights, I'd have thought the girl would be down to set it up right.

I don't know dude, that's the only time I've ever gotten creamy poo cream on my dick when engaging in such acts. It was creamy and stinky. I was bothered. Also I didn't like her so it may have been a different story if it happened with someone else. I wiped my wiener on a towel in the bathroom and went home.

It's complicated. I would applaud her if there were no poo but I wouldn't damn her if there was. That's were poo lives, after all. If I went in my shed I couldn't get mad about all the bees because I know my shed is full of bees.

I also had anal sex with an Asian girl I didn't like, but I took a full on shower in her roommate's bathroom (I really didn't like her) which was actually pleasant and luxurious and and then refused a ride home from her. "It's pretty far..." "I SAID NO." and it was a really weird night all in all. I walked home in November in Chicago across several neighborhoods even though there are taxis, buses, and trains I could've taken. I think it was a penance walk because I felt really ashamed of the whole thing even though it was kind of cool. Writing this has been good for me.

Congrats on going solo.

Now if you can reissue the skeleton graphic from 2001, I would be psyched. I think I skated 6 of those in a row. I cleared out the online places I could find at the time. (those were 7.75 at that time right?)

Even more, if you could put that graphic on a 1992 football shaped deck, I'd ride those until death. I love those shapes and that's one of my fave graphics ever (also a Misfits fan)

Also skated a bunch of the 3 skulls w/blood decks. Oh, and (wish I still had this) I had this old Toy Machine monster hoodie that had "Zero" (bold logo) screened on the upper back (Tum Yeto tag). Always thought that was awesome. Dunno why/how/when I got rid of that, sucks.

Anyway, thanks for all the great stuff over the years
