Risers or not
« on: September 07, 2017, 04:12:28 PM »
Will I need risers for 56mm and 58mm wheels and if so, should I go with 1/8 or 1/4? My trucks are medium loose, and I'm a bigger guy at 210lbs.

Risers for sure, especially with wheels of that size. I usually go with 1/8 but I skate high trucks and 54s ( granted my trucks are pretty loose as well)

Thanks for the reply Moe. I'm getting wheel burn with 53's so I'm thinking about going with 1/4 just be safe. What do you think?

Unless your wheels are 58mm+ I'd advise against going 1/4".
All you got is today, get out and skate.

you definitely don't need them, especially if you're riding stage eleven independent trucks

1/16th is enough to significantly affect turning in my opinion

I have used them before. But always end up taking them off after setting up a new board. Hit or miss for me. But they are cool

56mm wheels with 1/8th" risers seems ideal. Wheel shapes start getting obnoxious at 58mm--usually chunkier with a wider riding surface (aimed at pool skaters to lap over big coping) which necessitates 1/4" risers. Also, forged baseplates may lower the truck height a little.

54mm without risers because I use hard bushings, with loose trucks probably I will use 1/8 risers. It's funny because I used them for years thinking that will help me to not break many boards and 2-3 years ago I stopped using them and I haven't broken any deck since that...

If possible I'd set it up and try it first.....how and what you skate makes a difference too.....

Thanks for the advice everyone. So after skating 1/4 on my 56's I decided to go with 1/8. 1/8 feels way better.  I'm going to try 1/4 with 58's and see how it feels might go down to 1/8 on the 58's depending

I have a quiver and have gone back and forth....risers make some sense but it feels sketchy being that high up especially if you are skating ACEs or indys.....the other thing I realize is wheel bite namely bothers me when I get bucked not landing a kickflip right.....I don't get it carving around much....so these cruiser set ups I don't even flip my board or get much height anyhow...a lot of the boards have small wheelbases so high set ups feel dumb....

My new compromise is smaller wheels no riser.....or the little shock pad.....

i skate 56 no risers. used to use them but dont anymore. i skate my trucks real loose and get wheelbite on the regular on the flips, but it doesn't bother me, just figure i need to do it better next time

I have to use them on 55+ wheels. But it also depends on truck and deck width and wheel shape. wider set ups =  more leverage = more likely to get wheel bite. 1/8" only. 1/4" gets a little too high on anything but a cruiser. don't be afraid of rises through. they can also help some trucks turn even better.

I ride 56mm Red Bones Clears Wheels right now, I don't use risers and I'm doing just fine...
