Filming/Camera
« on: October 13, 2017, 08:52:13 PM »
Hey PALS,

I'm trying to start filming my friends and myself skating but am not quite sure what camera to get. VV1000 or HVX200? I honestly am not a filmer, but the crew I skate with doesn't really have one anyways. I just want to be able to film a part/video without breaking the bank.

Definitely start with a VD.  You'll have immediate street cred.

Then buy a cheap dslr and a cheaper fish eye to it and blam!  You're a filmer!

Better than a gopro attached to a VX handle from deathlens https://www.deathdigital.com/products/death-grip-vx-handle
Just hold your phone in your hand. Or spend 100 bucks on a handicam from sony or panasonic that saves video to sd card

Damn I left my bubbler at my parents house

you can make almost any camera look cool. it's not what you use, it's how you use it.

For HD the t3i is still decent enough looking and very cheap these days. pair it with a manybrand fisheye and you're good to go.

any dslr filmers here zoom while recording? i've read that it's up to the type of lens to be able to keep focus while zooming but have yet to find an example of such a lens. would it be cheaper to use a camcorder instead?

filming long lens on a DSLR is awkward compared to having a dedicated camcorder. for SD, think about a TRV900, PD150, or a DVX. these should all be in the ~200 range.

Yep, zooming on a DSLR is no fun. I haven't researched into a lens that has smooth transitions, but I only use my DSLR to shoot photos, or film fisheye / long lens shots with no zooming.

You need a camera lens with a fixed aperture to zoom on DSLR.  So if you're buying a lens and it says 2.8-5.6, the lighting will change when you zoom.

Basically you need an L series lens from Canon as your least expensive option.

And the zoom is still pretty choppy and hard to control.  Having a camera with a motorized zoom, like a VX or HVX is much easier.

I'm going to get kooked to shit for this, but the much maligned Canon GL2 is actually pretty good. I picked up a bundle of 2 with assorted accessories for $200 and if you you set it right it looks and sounds 90% the same as a VX for 1/6 the price. Plus I'm not afraid to do sketchy things with it and if it breaks I can just buy another. People can go on all they want about VX colors but all it really is is oversaturated colors with white balance set off the sky, it's not that hard to emulate. That being said you don't get the street cred a VX gets you and I'm sure they're a bit nicer to use. The major issue is that you can't mount a mark 1 to it. That being said I think the argument that you should either get a VX with a mark 1 or just go HD does have some credence to it.

Yes. It's pretty difficult but if you could somehow pull it off it looks good.

None of this is even close to correct.

I actually do shoot video with a dslr, I used a VX to shoot 5 videos over 12 years and needed to do something different.  So, I use a canon 7D, 8mm sigma circular fish and the Canon L 24-105.  Over time I've gotten good at pan and scan style of filming.  It's not easy, but once the lens mechanism breaks in the process is pretty smooth.  It's not as easy as a Panasonic or a Sony, but works for me.

Nothing will ever have the look and feel of a VX1000 with a MK1, but after a decade of doing the same thing, I wanted to learn skills with a camera that has better real world applications.  I still will use a VX to help friends on their own projects, but I'm all HD for my projects.

i hated filming skating with a dslr. VX series for SD, or hpx/hvx/hmc for HD.

The only camera advice you need my man. Cept not just how, but who. People need to want to look at what they're looking at
