Music and Skateboarding
« on: November 06, 2017, 07:15:37 PM »
Hey folks. My roommate is a turbo nerd when it comes to computer programming, skateboarding, and music. As such, he thought it would be cool to make an interactive graphical visualization of music in skate videos. And so he did. He scraped all of the nets for every instance of every genre, artist, and song in every skate video he could find to make this completely esoteric colorful piece of eye candy. So please, click, drag, inspect, and share. I guarantee you'll like it. If you don't, I don't like you!

This is really cool. Skateboarding needs more stuff like this.

Your roommate fuckin' rules. This is awesome, and I actually learned a couple things. I definitely would have guessed there was more hip hop than classic rock in videos. Good work, turbo nerd.

that was/ is really cool, dude has really done his homework on this one!
It funny to see how much 411VM skewed the results though in terms of artists like gang starr and down by law

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

I was curious who 'Sol' was - turned out he did the beats for 411VM. I suppose it makes sense for one of the first consistent forms of skate media to leave a media impact.

Fugazi was also used in a lot of the old Thrasher videos, and I remember The Beatles from old Plan B and City videos, as well as the Momentum wheels video, Un Momento, Por Favor.

My roommate isn't really a nerd. He's actually a total brogrammer. Everyday after he's done coding he drains 4 Buzzballs, hits the beach to surf, and then swipes Tinder for primo poon to pound. I was just trying to humanize him. Cool stuff though, huh?

I take exception to Beastie Boys not being considered hip hop. Unless the only song of theirs that was used was fight for your right to party, it doesn't really make sense.

This is really cool! Just curious if he cut out bands that were only used a few times to ease the process or keeping the visuals clean. Only noticed bands that were used at least 4 times(unless  just missed em) but can think of a few examples that a band has only been used like once or twice.

thoughts:

- where was this information gathered? like, what is the contents of the database of information?

- sol throws the data off sort of. is it just every time it appears in 411? but then it says it only appears 35 times.

- it feels funny that some smaller edits counts as equally (as it should) as a more legendary part. like its funny seeing CKY having more appearances than Dinosaur Jr.

- also I imagined Andre Nickatina, Mr. Dibbs, RJD2 and others that had a pretty big run in the early-mid 2000s higher up on the list.

I enjoyed looking at this and I'm definitely not criticizing. I wish I knew how to program so I can do data visualization with all my memories and stupid shit I think about. These are just thoughts I had. I'd gnar you and your buddy if I could.

edit: i read the bottom and saw how the data was imputed. I also read "quick" script so there ya go.

Beastie Boys used to be a hardcore band! Actually, they always mixed styles, that's what makes them so good. Also, this:

time for livin' and Carroll at EMB is a match made in heaven.
never knew this was the "official" film clip though...

My man

D3.js is the future

Also you mentioned Jim Vallandingham as inspiration on github, Josh Katz (not the skater, funnily enough...) at New York Times is the best data visualiser there, check out his stuff on their site
