help with west coast ireland
« on: November 08, 2017, 07:38:44 PM »
I'm headed over in the spring and am staying. I'm gonna be on the west coast, what towns are close (15 -20 min  car drive) to 'good' surf?  I want to be close and be able to bike from town to the beach with my surf shit.  Even if you have to ask a friend and reply later I'd be real happy for some insight.  (and will for shore meet up for a skate!)

Lahinch is the only real surf town in Ireland. There is a good break right in town and more in the surrounding areas.  Locals are friendly and there are some fun pubs. You can purchase and rent boards here, which can be more difficult in other parts of Ireland.

I have surfed further south in Kerry at Inch beach, which was fun, and some other spots near Port Rush up North.  But Lahinch was my favorite.

It's a small enough country and you're never more than a 2 hour drive (on shitty roads though) from the sea.  Anywhere along the west coast will have something to surf - Tralee in Kerry (SW) is pretty good, along with Bundoran in Donegal (NW).  https://www.wildatlanticway.com/things-to-do/features/surfing is a good starting point - the Irish tourist board market the WAW quite heavily at folks into the great outdoors, and who'd be able to handle the cold.  Try Reddit or FB for more obvious starting points for info, etc.

Skatewise, Galway has some street spots, Limerick has a decent park (Mount Kennet) and some good street spots with a strong scene.  Dublin has the lion's share of parks and spots though.

Enjoy your trip!

Oh shoot, just seeing this now. Lahinch is great for surfing, apparently there's good spots in Sligo too, I can't remember where.

The Galway skate scene is getting better all the time, but it's still pretty shit at the minute. Limerick skate scene is decent. Cork is also pretty good.

Not surfing relates but make sure you take a trip to the Aran Islands.  It was the coolest place I went in Ireland and  one of the most beautiful places I've been anywhere in the world.
Jorts
Anklets
Rat tails
Sling shots
Toe rings
Shuv it tail grabs
Jump ramps

Aran, thanks.  I'll have all the time in ireland to do that cause I'm stayin, indefinetely.  If you enjoy lurking on the sk8park ledge and smoking dope, hit me up in a couple of months when I'm there.
