I am beginning to think 149 is too small for 8.5. I think you need 169 for a 9 inch and no smaller than 159 for 8.75. Spacers only push the wheels out .125 inches per wheel, so really 149 with inside spacers is ideal for an 8.25 deck. Up to you but I have been playing around of late and lurking hard in trucks thread. You could get ace 55 also.

I have 149s on an 8.75 and 60mm wheels and it's perfect. When i had 169s i only liked them on at least a 9 inch

Word, that is pretty much what I was envisioning for the next step, 8.75" with big conical fulls (58mm though). Are you running extra washers or nah?

No extra washers just one per wheel, everything is flush with the deck.

Lol, yeah, I am cheap. For the price of a branded deck, I can get 2 blank decks and grip tape.
I'd rather do that and save my money for good trucks, wheels and bearings.

I really would like to find more big & short boards to skate. Been skating a lot of the Polar Dane shape and also had one Prime Woods Dune board. Which companies make boards over 9" wide and under 32" long?
Theories has one shape called The Delivery Board that looks pretty good, anyone skated it?

Currently riding:

Dane1 Polar 9,72"
Ace 55's with Bones Mediums
Krooked Risers
56mm Spitfire Classics with Bronson bearings

Check out the Deckcrafters Killdozer/Sharkdozer (same shape/different graphic: 11x 30 7/8, 16.75wb), Blue Haven Pool Cue Snub (10x30, 15.5 and 16.25wb), Double Double (9.25x31.75, 14wb).

Also the Dogtown Bigfoot and Bigfoot II.

edit: snub is 10x30, not 33

3 over 9 set-ups

A) Cruiser
     Earthwing Thruster 9.5x36
     Bear Trucks
     Powell ATFs

Best feeling concave on a cruiser/downhill I’ve ever felt. Perfect pockets. Only problem is that it was really warped, I had to screw 2x4s and weight it for a couple weeks to get rid of it. But it was really cheap.

B) pool/tranny
     Powell Flight 9.26x32
     Indy 169 stage 10
     Bones Laseks SPF

Indestructible, and fun on street too.

C) old-school
     Black Label Auby Bullnose 10x31
     Indy 169 stage 9 x bones mediums
     60mm Rat Bones 85a
      Rib bones

Bonelesses have come back, I’m using this for street and feeling like a kid again

I reckon Welcome currently makes the best big boards. I've been rocking two 9" boards for a while now and absolutely love them both. Growing up and starting skating in the 80's I'm really happy that it's getting easier to get good bigger boards again.

Welcome Sledgehammer 9"
Independent 159 trucks hollow and classic 11
Rubber risers
Rails
Ricta cloud 78 on the cruiser deck and Jamie Foy Spitfire  F4 99U on my street board.
Independent Black bearings

Been on 8.5” for a while with indy 149s, want to move up to an 8.75” or a 9”. Can I counteract the overhang with some extra washers and big conical wheels? I would love to not buy new trucks.

Love this thread, been lurking forever and keep coming back to look at these setups.

You could, but I reckon you'd be much better off with a set of 159s they work fine for both the 8.75 and the 9". Personally I love an excuse to buy shiny new kit...

I went from a 7.75 to a 9 in the past 2 weeks.

A friend of mine kept asking me to try his 9.5 at the park and when I finally did, I landed a kickflip and a tre flip first try. “hmm?” 🤔 I thought. “well, if I learned treflips in 1991 on a 9 inch board, then surely I could do no wrong getting that size now” ☝️😀 (I’m 41)

The beauty of doing flip tricks on a larger board is that the chance of over flipping is virtually none. It’s refreshing coming from a 7.75. I was always trying to master just the right amount of flick and shuv. Now I just pop and kick the shit out of it.

Last weekend my friends at the park were looking at me cross eyed and asking “why I’m riding a cruiser” and what not. Not sure if this big board phase is sort of a “rebirth” of my decades of skating or the beginning of the end. My money is on “rebirth” 🤞 but I’m in my 40s so only time will tell.

Here’s what I’m riding:
Chico Brenez 9’

Indy hollows 149 (this is the exact type and size Chico skates with this board)
OJ key frames 54mm

Polar 90's shape with 159's, risers and 54's. Fun as shit.

awesome, we have the same set-up!!!  8)

I've switched last year from 8.75/8.8 to full 9.25 -9.5, it was a lot better tbh.

The idea for 2018 was to skate as many different shapes as possible and always changing but once I went past 9" it was done deal.

Also, I'm a 11/10.5 so it works better having more standing surface.
The '80s were the worst period. You had these horrible pop bands growing their hair and calling themselves metal.

Trackers have a good turn imo but they have to be falling-off-loose tho.  Try it out.  Trackers are cool cause when theyre that loose theyre still pretty stable.
