Tips for skating in the winter
« on: January 02, 2018, 10:41:22 AM »
Any pals have any tips for skating outside in the winter? Obviously layers, bundle up, etc. but anything that helps bear the cold. I'm not fortunate to be near any indoor parks but still wanna skate.

Related: any tips to dry the ground faster after a snowfall?

Never had to worry about this growing up in Australia but i moved to Vancouver a few years ago and its been shitty in the winter time. Obviously not as much snow as other places but it rains so much in the winter and when its not raining the air is just uncomfortabley cold, i try to motivate myself as much as possible to hit the streets when i can but ive been pretty lazy so far this winter, just counting down the days to warmer weather.

Under Armor Cold gear is your best friend for winter skating. Mittens instead of gloves. Layers. I recently started wearing a face mask when the windchill get stupid cold. Always worn one snowboarding and biking in the winter, but never did skating. Not sure why I waited so long. Definitely makes things a bit more bearable.

you got to have your flannels and beanies ready to go so that when the temperature hit's the 40s you have a chance to wear them but the key is to get to the park earlier enough that it's still cold enough by the the time it gets up to the 60s at lunch time. it's tough man but if you plan it just right you can rock that winter gear.

Nobody gonna say parking garages? Also a tip for people in southern california who aren't used 46-60 F weather i recommend wearing thermal pants. I always catch flack from my friends for wearing them but at the end of the day I'm usually the only one skating at 10 pm while everyone is indoors.

Does anybody else eyes water when skating in the winter? Whenever I'm doing a bowl run and it's cold out, my eyes start to water like hell and then I can't see where I'm going so I usually end up calling it quits lol.

Watch for salt on the sidewalks, streets, etc. That shit's strong enough to melt ice and fuck up hardwood and tile, so I'm sure none of you would want it on your board.

Got it on my grip tape,it's all white ,my deck is salty as chocolate balls and everything is still perfect for riding and I am abusing this setup from september...just clean and cream your bearings once a week!

Yea I was skating last week and was doing that awkward looking shit where you almost fall off your board for no reason while pushing because you’re trucks are super tight and your board is not turning with you at all.

This is semi-offtopic but do any of y'all have a winter jacket/coat recommendation?  Are there any that are sturdy enough to skate in without tearing? I was in the midwest this past weekend and got semi-hypothermic trying to skate outside(worth it though).  Probably won't be able to afford a good one till summer but appreciate any suggestions.  Also to the OP's question I can't recommend long underwear and mittens strongly enough.
All you got is today, get out and skate.

ok so this is a thing? I went for a skate on Sunday on a fresh deck, it was warm and everything was working (albeit my bushings were a little bit stiff). Jumped on my board yesterday and the thing just veers off to the left like the trucks are bolted on diagonally or some shit :o

in my experience bushings shrink and harden in the cold, so if your ride closer to medium youll want loose at room temp

There is one thing you should know about ceramic skate bearings: Most of the time, only the balls are made of ceramic. Which means that the cage of the ceramic bearing can rust just as well as a classic bearing if it is made of chrome steel. Ceramic bearings are less sensitive but not eternal either. If the bearing contains stainless steel, it will put up better with bad weather. On the other hand the set is far more expensive.

This is a dude I know who fucking rips but has committed to skating every day, despite having to travel for work and living in Snowy rural midwestern areas. You gotta just get a snow-complete and an open mind.

As far as frozen bushings go I just bring my skateboard inside with me during the winter as opposed to leaving it in my trunk. I skate fairly loose trucks as is, so it's never been an overwhelming problem anyway, but just making a habit of bringing it inside will nip that one right away.

As far as frozen bushings go I just bring my skateboard inside with me during the winter...

I couldn't imagine leaving my board "outside" (in car) all winter.

I've been skating transition a lot recently. Temps have been in upper 20s and low 30s. I've been wearing under armour cold gear as full base layer. Over the UA, I've been wearing on lower body, army/BDU shorts, pads, and knee high socks (full-on 80s style), and on upper body, long sleeve t-shirt, t-shirt, and windbreaker (elbow pads over windbreaker), and gloves. On head I've been wearing a knit hat, and on really windy days, I'll add an under amour cold gear hood/mask. This has kept me plenty warm. That said, more than three people ramp and you start to get cold waiting for a run.

Street skating: All the above, but no pads, and pants instead of shorts.

If you go to an indoor, have your board ride shotgun so it doesn't freeze in the trunk on the way there
