There's a new Van's 15 sec ad that plays before videos on Thrasher. In it Dan Lu does a grind on a rail that's up against a fence and he pushes off the fence with his hand and it fucking kills it for me! As do almost all clips where people push off with their hands.

So I want to get some opinions on putting hands down on wallrides and fence grinders. What are your thoughts? Are there any acceptable tricks done this way in history?

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you're an architect.

If they're not clearly using the wall to their aid I'd say its fine. Especially doing anything frontside its natural to touch the wall.

No touch is always better though imo

There was a funbox at the park i grew up skating where the ledge was close to the wall, i always discounted anything where people hands were touching. You could actually see a dirty line on the wall where everyones hands were rubbing on their frontside 5050s and tailslide shove it tailslides. Shit was disgusting twice.

Was about to post this. I think this also has to do with modern skating, if Dan did that in the 90's no one would care. I think Bam did the same rail later without touching...

A lot of stuff wouldn't fly these days. Tim O's ender in EE3... my lil millennial friend says its not a make cause he stepped off after landing... Trying to tell him we weren't so picky back then.

a guy i knew years ago could do em 'no-hands' but it was the ollie bash onto the wall ride down type. it was still very sick.

I've done 'em. The key is to point both of your arms in front of you, like some kind of old school surfer or something. Still, 99% of the ones I've done used a hand, and I'm ok with that.

On a ledge/rail with a wall right next to it, a tap or graze is different than holding on in my eyes.

Depends. I think a tap is ok, but really putting the hands on the wall is more suspect. Do something gnarly and do a baker maker, that's cool. Do something gnarly and do it clean, way better.
