I very rarely share this experience as most people could give a shit but some of you may appreciate it.
My band at the time played with The Fall back in 2004, which was a pretty big deal to us. At the time Mark E. Smith was experiencing pretty severe back problems, he was literally being wheeled around back stage on a hand truck dolly by their tour manager so he could avoid walking. He did the entire show seated behind a desk pulled from the basement of the club like some demented newscaster/talk show host from the 70's. It was equally absurd and amazing.
After the show we were all drinking some beers together and chatting as we had been throughout the evening, since before soundcheck had even begun. The band were all funny and lovely people. As The Fall were preparing to leave Mark E. Smith called me over and gave me a hug, told me I was a "good one" and to take care of myself. I was flummoxed and weirdly elated. A few moments later their tour manager came over and told me that in all the years he had worked with Mark E. Smith he had never once seen him do that.
I've always felt like that was a pretty special and odd moment.
