Minding The Gap
« on: January 28, 2018, 02:14:54 PM »
Apologies if this has been posted (searched and didn’t find anything) and/or it belongs in Photo/Video, but I was surprised to see a skateboarding documentary (rather, documentary featuring skateboarding) on a top 5 documentaries from Sundance list.  Film is “Minding The Gap” and accoding to Vox “director Bing Liu grew up in Rockford, Illinois — one of America’s most dangerous cities, partly thanks to an exceptionally high rate of domestic violence. To make the film, he trained his camera on three of his friends, all avid skateboarders, for years. The result is often troubling and deeply moving, a story about the ways that generational violence and poverty affect families and cities. But it’s presented through the lens of the characters’ individual stories, so Minding the Gap never gets too mired in its own seriousness. As a work of nonfiction, it’s stunning; as a piece of storytelling, it’s heartbreaking.”

Looks like the site for the film is mindingthegapfilm.com  It looks like a film that does skating justice, albeit it plays a ‘supporting role’ to larger themes.

Anyone know more about it?

He did the Yeah! Boardshop video, right? That dude filmed that video 100% differently than every other skate video maker out there... that's gnarly. Will see if at all possible.

Is that the one filmed on a gimble from sort of shoulder height or above? I loved that video. Really made me think about less explored angles and how sterile skate videos can be.

Title is very 90s - 00s romcom.  Like an American woman meets Hugh Grant in the London Underground yadda yadda.   If I were the distributor, I’d switch it up fast.  Stoked about skateboarding stories/Films being told by people who get it and aren’t spectators or tourists.

Bing is super awesome, and it's honestly hilarious to watch him film. He just runs with his camera next to the skater, but it turns out really well.

I went to a screening of this a few months ago and loved it.  It seems like the guy that made it is a true skate rat.  I have a feeling that most anyone that grew up skating will find things in this film to relate to.

It's not the most uplifting story, but I highly recommend checking this out if you get a chance.  I believe that it recently got distribution and should be out later this year.

It is up on Hulu and other places on the internets today.

It is really good.

Here is an interesting q&a that explores a little more about the film and the skate background.

I watched it last night and thought it was pretty special. Good for him for linking up with Kartemquin. That's some heavy backing.

I caught major Midwest nostalgia. Made me wanna move back to Chicago.

A good tearjerker skateboarding movie?  Yeah!

I really loved it.  A wonderful contrast to all the documentaries/movies about skaters who are pro or getting hooked up or trying to get hooked up.  Not a single bit of that, just three real average skaters and their lives.

And Bing weaving the unexpected common theme among them besides skateboarding really caught me off guard but was done exquisitely.
Keep Rolling!

That one rapid fire skate sequence where it is all filmed at or above eye level was done exceptionally well.

When I moved to LaSalle/Peru IL in 94, my buddy and if drive an hour to Rockford park every other day. There was a decent scene in the streets there too. Going to watch this tonight for sure.

Chicago has all kinds of rad scenes all over though. In my experience that's not the case in LA. Honestly, I can feel myself getting priced out too. The pizza here mostly sucks really hard.

I dunno I left for a reason but the grass is starting to look greener again. It won't when it's covered in snowy dog shit of course.

Honestly, this is just the kind of film the skate scene needs right now.

Forget the hate and go back to what brought us all together.

We are all fucked up in our own way, but we decided to ride a plank of wood and get away from it all and perfect our craft in any which way we could.

And, damn did it and does it feel good.

Just finished it. Definitely pretty close to my reality. Could relate to a lot of instances, growing up with a crack head “stepdad” that would steal my shit and try to get me to buy it back. Ended with us getting into a fist fight and the cops coming and essentially kicking me out when I was like 17.

Worked out for the best.

You know you're a special filmer if you can make people focus on your filming style instead of what a shithole northern Illinois is lol. Seriously though, that dude is special behind the lens.

Surprisingly, Minding the Gap made it on to Barack Obama's best films of the year list.

It was definitely the best of the skate oriented films this year.
