Help converting HI-8 to 60p?
« on: February 16, 2018, 11:26:22 AM »
I have tons of HI-8 tapes from the 90's that I have captured once, just by using an old Digital HI-8 camera to transfer  the Video-8 and HI-8 tapes to my computer. But now I see old videos being posted on Youtube that were filmed in Video-8 or HI-8 that are now 720p60, Example:

Same with Mini DV, VX footage, example:

Does anyone know if this is a capture issue? Or do you use some type of software on the footage you already have?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

if the original file is 60i (interlaced 60 frames per second) which vx footage is or most NTSC DV cameras it will work so it depends on how you capture it. but you cant put just any footage in a 60p timeline and and have it be smooth, it has to be 60i originally.

Thank you Sir... Would you happen to know what device can import 60i?

here's my workflow for full res, online vx footage. works great if you can swing it.

edit the project in an HD timeline like 1260 x 1080 (you'll have the black bars on the side)
export it full res as a quicktime file
bring the file into MPEG Streamclip (you can download off the web for free)
after dragging the video into the window- select export to mpeg-4
limit the data rate to the highest kbps possible before hitting like a gig
select H264
select the correct aspect ratio (it usually defaults to it)
30 fps
deinterlace video

sounds like an obscure methodology, but it makes the footage look just as good as capture quality (akin to that t-funk video you posted)

hope that helps

I haven't in years, but we used to cut it like any normal low and then sticker over the exposed cut part so it was a little more comfortable
