Sorta new 30ish skater
« on: February 26, 2018, 05:19:39 PM »
I'm 29 about to hit 30 this spring. Nay skaters here in their 30s? So I begun skating at 15 cause I thought it looked fun and for the most part it was I ton a fun doing it and stopped when I was about 18. I was never really any good all I could do for an Ollie but it didn't matter to me cause I was having doing and to me that was all that mattered to me. I quit cause of the discouragement I got from the more experienced skater calling me a "poser" and shit but I never tried or act like anything that. Even though I'm approaching 30 I have different outlook on life and a more mature mindset I really want to get back into skating and I still think it looks fun when I see people riding or when I watch clips. Any tips on getting started?

Do it for fun and you'll be just fine. Don't worry about tricks. Get out and push around. If you enjoy it, you're doing it right.

id say dont distance yourself from the culture out of insecurity, its easy to adopt some sort of reactionnary stance but it will only limit the friends and experiences you can have. just do whatever you do and try and enjoy how others do it no matter how proficient or not they may be. just be genuine and you will have some good times. no one can tell you how you should or shouldnt do it, but learning and deepening your understanding is fun and enriching if you stay open.

Thanks for the advice!  I know what you mean about distancing myself and I will not be doing that. The first thing I'm going to cool is find a complete deck and a reliable pair of skate shoes and start riding! Once I build I feel li can start to grasp it and build up enough confidence I will skate at the park.

It just hurts more when you slam when you're 30, is all.  Go out and skate!

In middle school the better kids called me a poseur cause I wasn’t super good at doing tricks and stuff but the love kept me in it and later on I skated with them all the time.

I guess what I’m saying is if you love doing something just do it and if others who are hating see that you love it they’ll respect it. Just do you man, and make sure to stretch. Getting older in skating just means you have to skate longer and work harder to be comfortable on board and the slams are gonna hurt more but you’re gonna be more rewarded after. Have fun dude!

The good part is you aren’t going to get down on yourself for loosing tricks because you don’t have any to loose. Make sure you are on medical insurance because you are bound to wind up in the hospital.

The first thing I'm going to cool is find a complete deck and a reliable pair of skate shoes and start riding!
If you're budget allows it and there's a local skateshop in your area you should try to support them.  If not several Slap Pals run skate shops with solid online stores:
144p at 35thave.com(Tacoma area Washington)
Lance at http://www.seasonsskateshop.bigcartel.com(Albany NY)
Watson at http://www.ninetimesskateshop.com(Saskatoon Canada)
Also if you want to get an idea of what people are riding this thread is helpful:

If you're on a budget this thread is often helpful:
http://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?topic=59883.4170
If you want to completely lose your mind you can read the trucks thread:
http://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?topic=88869.3210
My advice would be to get a solid set of trucks that fit a broad range of deck sizes(Independent 144s, Thunder 148s, Ace 44s) and get the cheapest deck, wheels, bearings and hardware you can find.  In my view the trucks are the most important part of your setup and the only part that will have any sort of longevity if you really see yourself skating longterm.
All you got is today, get out and skate.

Thanks for the advice but at this point in my life I got nobody that I need to impress expect for my clients which I do with smooth words and a good sales pitch and if I don't impress them then I don't get paid. I don't want to break the bank too much that adult life can do some damage on your piggy bank. If people want to talk shit about me that's fine. Hell, I will even talk go shit about myself with them lol

I will look into that! I'm sure siri or google can help me find a good skate shop. I'm all for supporting small businesses that's actually what I do for my job is to provide benefits for small businesses.

Hey 30 year old man dont u worry about the lil bois at the skate park u go buy the frog skateboart that fits u best.  When those bois say hey pozer u just wipe those tears and tell them to frick it in thy butt.

Indy hollows r super light

Also try pushing up hills if u need muscle memory/balance in ur legs. Do it switch

Obviously stretch first and give yourself time to warm so don't get frustrated if it's not going well at first. And apparently never diss fred gall even if he slapped your mother.
Rest in peace Dick Dale.
