Finishing up my final year at college and when i'm either at school or at work I'll often go on hiatus with skateboarding for months. How do you guys balance other stuff of your life with skating?

It's pretty much the same way that you would fit anything else into your life. People find ways to fit in going to the gym, its the same type of shit.
At least when you're a washed-out hipster douchebag in NY, you can milk it at some decent looking, hard to skate spots. In LA you're just a tan-lined faggot in a school yard somewhere.

This is actually a good question but also has a simple answer: everyone has a hobby. Video games, the gym, getting fucked up at the bar, bird watching or skateboarding.

You may have to cut into your other leisure activities and the way you skate may have to change but you can keep it going a couple times a week if you really want to.

As good as skating is, by your late 20’s you should be doing something a little better for your personal stability most of the time anyway. You just gotta find the balance. Don’t sweat it and enjoy embarking on a new phase of your life.

Get into skating bowls. You'll still be ok at it even if you can only skate like one day a week and when you start getting fat from sitting behind a desk for 40 hrs a week, it's actually an advantage because a dad gut helps you go faster on transition.

You don’t really...I’m about to turn 31 and I’ve noticed it’s getting harder to get out over the last 12/18 months. At some point you gotta realise that you can’t do it all the time anymore and have to ‘grow up’ in some regard...I’ll still always try to get out atleast once a week though. Don’t get me wrong I’ll never stop.

Instead of going to the bar, skate. Instead of going to the movies, skate. Instead of sitting on the couch, skate. Even if it's for 30 minutes, skate as much as possible. Cruiser run, thats skating. Some flat ground, thats skating. I've managed to hold down full time jobs, sometimes 2 jobs, going to school, the whole deal. If you want to skate bad enough you'll figure it out.

Get a job where you can take skate breaks. I really should be at work at 9am tomorrow but fuck it., I'm going to the park for an hour or so... b/c I'm the boss. Could mean answering a few emails and texts between slash grinds but so be it...

I like 9-5 jobs because my schedule is set and I can skate evenings and weekends. Like most things, you just gotta make time.

Honestly it blows that I can't be out there skating 6 hours a day. Also I live in the North East so there's about half the year where skating outside becomes rough as hell. But when it's nice out, I prioritize skateboarding over just about everything else, still usually get to skate like 3 or 4 times a week. I do programming for a living though so I'm hoping I can move towards remote / flexible hours and free up more time for skating (and music and art and all the other shit I've had to neglect).

Hyped to see an SB-C OG on Slap. Glad you're still skating dude.

Morning sessions are where it's at.
Your local park will be full of busy people who are getting their fix there. You won't come across any big egos at 9am either.

To be honest it is easier to find a balance between work and skateboarding than girlfriend and skateboarding...

I work a 40+ hour a week job; I just skate on my days off. Sometimes on both days, but always on at least one of those days. It's getting warmer out though so I'm gonna try to start going more during the week when I get off work.

Morning sessions are legit the best. Used to have them at 7 before school everyday. Nice and cool in the summer, park is almost always empty for you and your bros. You can decide to skip first period or just not go to school at all. Good times.

Before I became a crippled as bitch I would meet up with some buddies at like 9:30 PM and hit the skatepark up. We all worked in restaurants so we pretty much would all get off between 9-10. Like others have said you just gotta make time

I agree with this.  I love waking up early and hitting my local park with a coffee on Saturday/Sunday.

You start skating less which makes you skate worse and then you start blaming your setup and buying a surplus of gear to solve your problems when deep down you know the true problem is your lack of time on the board.

.........or at least that's what I hear from a friend

Yeah it’s sucks entering that new phase in your life, but you’ll find a way. Just like all of us. If you do get worse at skating because of it (like me), just accept it and have fun for what it is and be thankful that you still have skating in your life.  I don’t know if anyone mentioned it yet, but move closer to your job if you are able to. That way when you get home you can squeeze in an hour or two of skating and still have time to do other things ppl do after work.
