Tony Hawk actually commented on that in his CBI interview somewhat recently.

Quote
Well, another source of recent controversy has been Tim Von Werne’s dismissal from Birdhouse, possibly because of his sexuality? Care to comment?

Let me try to explain this.

This is back when I was doing guest editor issues of Skateboarder Magazine. I knew that Tim was gay and figured that it could be an amazing article to have him come out to the industry in the magazine. This is right around when we were gearing up to start doing The End.

We’d talked to Tim about doing the piece and while he was a little hesitant, he was down. So we do the article where he essentially comes out and we’re in the process of putting it in a future issue of the magazine… I just don’t think I realized the gravity of the article in terms of someone’s life experience and being gay.

I don’t want to throw anybody under the bus here but our team manager at the time, you might be able to figure out who that was, found out about the article and freaked out. He calls me up and says, “What the fuck are you doing!?!”

“I’m doing an interesting article about a skater who happens to be gay.”

“If you do that, I’m going to quit and take the whole team with me.”

Basically, he began threatening to steal my team because of this article. In hindsight, I don’t think that it would’ve actually happened, but at the time, it was a pretty heavy threat for me as a company owner. I had put so much of my resources into the team and we had all these plans around this big video we were about to start working on… I had to make the executive decision to kill the article.

You can call that selfish if you want but it felt like a very real threat to me at the time. And while it was an interesting article, I didn’t realize the weight of the situation. While I obviously support the cause, I wasn’t sure if I was the right person to be championing gay rights in skating… if that makes sense. I underestimated how it would resonate within the industry or how it would affect Tim. He’s the one who I really feel the worst for in all of this.

But I did call Tim and tell him straight-up what was happening. He wasn’t surprised by any of it.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought was going to happen. I was trying to warn you about all of this when the article was first brought up.”

He was super cool about it. I guess I just didn’t listen in the beginning. But after all that, he obviously didn’t want to be on the same team with someone who possibly felt so homophobic about the whole thing… which is another bummer, because I feel like other riders get some of the blame in this when it really was the actions of this one person.

Who was the TM, j.Strickland?

^That was Strickland, I think.

I think this is only surprising to people from places other than California where you get a better indication of someone's political leanings by their outward appearance. In CA everyone skates and dresses in some kind of alterna wear arrested development adolescent gear and you think, "that guy must be cool" but he's really just some minority hating morlock who'd be wearing a MAGA hat one state over.

"Fuck Antwaun, Darrell, Forrest, and Keelan"-The industry

"Cory's sorry for what he did and doesn't deserve to go to prison"-The industry

I need clarification on the Keelan situation. I understand he was kicked off for asking for more money, but the Scumbag thing is a little confusing. They picked up a minor for their friend who is also a minor to have sex with and got in trouble by doing that?

Just going off memory, yeah it was a situation similar to that. 2 grown ass men going to pick up a child to go hook up with their wanna be famous child friend. Pretty fucked up, imo. And one of these grown ass men thinks "his name" deserved more than 10k a month. Keelan's a fucking moron

Danny Gonzalez said his career was cut short due to injury but I'm figuring it was partly because he sued Thrasher for using his likeness on the cover of Skate and Destroy. According to this article he kind of got screwed by the lawyers.

I came here just to bring up Danny Gonzalez. I remember seeing the kickflip melon Wallenburg when I first started skating and I was floored, and then I see a bunch of people losing their shit in Thrasher a few years later after Gerwer straight kickflipped it. Not for anything, but the fucking grab doesn't make it any less amazing. And now because Danny couldn't play the political game right, he was ass'd out. Obviously that's because of a lawsuit and not race, but that's the nature of not adhering to the hierarchy.

I like how people equally equate Trump/ MAGA to racism in this thread, that train of thought is equally as frat'ish as all the other industry cover ups and shadow racism we're claiming we're not about. Maybe it's just me, but all the people I know who voted Trump "a few states over" did so because the previous administration forgot about them. Idk if people truly realize the gravity of many of Obama's decisions on middle America, and the vast majority of these people voted in Trump's favor in an act of self preservation. To think that they would vote against their best interests and vote in someone who isn't even outwardly racist defies logic, and it leaves you with way less of an understanding of what's actually going on in this country.

I'm all for calling out racism since everyone should be judged by the content of their character, but don't join the opposing fraternity just because you're looking to project ignorance in an equal but opposite fashion.

Steven Fernandez is also a victim of child abuse. The situation is definitely fucked up but he was 15 at the time of his arrest. That is by all legal definition a child. Fuck the overzealous LA District Attorney's office and their bullshit politically motivated "moral outrage."

Also, the narrative that poor working class whites voted Trump into office is misinformation. Unsurprisingly, it was middle and upper class white people. Incomes of 50K and above.

I definitely know what you mean with people covering for their friends and family. I tend to favor the friends and family who're willing to compromise their relationship to tell you the truth about when you're fucking up. I've been lucky enough to have those types of people in my life, and they've put a lot on the line in order to see to it that I made myself better. Brand loyalty in lieu of sacrificing the individual, whether the brand is friendship/ family/ country/ your favorite board brand, will essentially kill everything we loved about those things in the first place. Hopefully skateboarding is willing to follow suit and clean up its own mess...

Yeah, but it was neglecting the poor whites that were neglected during the 8 years of Obama that threw the election in Trump's favor. Say what you will, but it was brutally close. Had the democrats not screwed Bernie and he went and pandered to them, they would have won by a landslide.

I lean left and am down for being PC but the Auby situation was not that simple.

I dont have a strong opinion on the "hang with the bros" side of skateboarding.  On one hand, it is pretty stupid and im sure tons real individuals were pushed out of the industry because they were too odd ball, but I also wouldnt want to be in the van with jimmy carlin for a week so I understand it.  I doubt a person like gonz and his antics would be accepted by an established team these days.

I do fully agree that many minorities do not speak out on issues to their team or sponsors because of that, which is a big reason I support being vocal on SLAP, because speaking out on moral issues shouldnt be a bad thing.

Delete your SLAP account then. Destroy any gear that has anything to do with all these evil white frat bro Nazi's. Only buy gear from minorities, only skate with minorities, hunt down and kill all whites that don't understand the gravity of their very existence of pure violence and privilege. Then when the job is done, kill yourself. Rid the planet of whites. Every single thing wrong with history can be traced back to white people. Genocide is completely acceptable this time around because we are on the right side of history, according to our subjective opinions. Which are always right and never extreme or flawed.

a lot of this mentality came out in the BA documentary sadly, i.e biebel's response being "hell yeah bro more pussy for me" and pros having to even say something like "skaters arent even his type!!!!" and reiterating how manly/good at skating he is, insinuating that there are clear boundaries for only the right type of gay person to be seen as acceptable in the eyes of the industry.

(110% stoked on BA coming out, the response to it jus showed how weirdly conservative the skating industry can be

BA is among my favorites and that documentary was quite powerful for our culture, but I often wonder how it would have gone if it was made about somebody less beloved than Brian. If somebody most of us would consider a kook came out I can't help but think that it wouldn't go as well for them. Brian's not the first gay skater in the industry, he's just the first public one that we all like. Don't forget that Osiris fired a filmer for being gay.

Have to say from what I know there isn't much more to the Auby thing. He ripped, ledges and now transition. All the transition came after the krooked situation. Pretty amazing to learn a whole new style of skating. Not to mention he's a rad dude. Big ups to Auby for being him. Not letting a shitty industry get him down. The industry is wack. Everyone wants to make sure they get their next box and have a seat at the premiere.

Jeremy Wray got pushed out of the industry by being a nice, honest human being.
Why wasn't he put back on Plan B, instead of Sheffey?
More marketing money for Plan Jock to be made outta Sheffey, than honest, sobor and 100% good, solid dude Jeremy Wray.
Not taking anything away from Sheffey, he's fucking gnar, but Jeremy said that he's in great shape and ready to go film a full video part, right now.
Sheffey?
A montage, maybe?

Hawk's excuse for not running the article about Tim is as flimsy as a philanderer's promise.
