Short friends
« on: May 20, 2018, 07:08:38 AM »
I was getting thru the JJ thread and got tight over all the short disses about being short.  I'm 'tall' but I'd rather be short.  You're a little better off I feel (safer, fit thru more shit in an escape situation and prolly hurt your back less doing sports) if your short.  But the main thing is my love for a lot of people I've been friends with that are 'small' or short.  The best people ever!!!  Being short is lifes motorcycle.  Ride on brothers and sisters.

"You can pop up that high because you're so tall"
This is a stupid comment, even if it's true. Which im not sure it is.

I think height only comes into play as an insult when the shorter person is trying to make up for lack of size in toughness or manliness, little man syndrome. As some who is 6'3 I've dealt with this shit since my grown spurt in 8th grade, grown men who try to step to me because I'm taller as some kind of test of strength or something.

as for height to pop i think longer boards would benefit taller skaters for pop as you could extend your frontleg further but no idea if the extra weight and stuff would cancel it out

I wouldn't say massive pop, but T-Funk skates with a lot of power for someone who is probably 5'2.

Not sure if he's actually short, or just average, but Christian Maalouf has some heavy pop.

My theory regarding skateboarding is that if you have to think about whether or not they're short, they're probably short. I'm guessing that Maalouf isn't any taller than 5'7.

Somewhat related: the people that comment on https://www.celebheights.com/ are absolute freaks. They estimate heights to the quarter inch and talk about morning and peak heights and shit.

i'm 5'6 and sometimes i hate it. i was supposed to grow much bigger tho and never had a real growth spurt, probably because my mom lived very unhealthy while she was pregnant. my dad supposedly was 6'2 and i on the other hand look like a person stuck forever in late puberty.

one of my best friends is 6'6 and skating with him when we ollie the same obstacle it's not even like we ollie the same obstacle. what's about knee high for me is more like a curb for him.

Feel sorry all you want but the back advantages outweigh insecurities.  At 5'6 you'll be 50 years old lifting stuff all over the place.

I'm 6'3 and I believe the advantages of being short outweigh the advantages of being tall. Lower centre of gravity, less time needed to complete a motor movement., and less distance to fall. Also most of my friends who are short and skate are also featherweights, which means less impact on joints, leading to longevity.

I second the point about longer wheelbases for taller dudes. I just moved up to a 15" wb / 33" long board and I am ollying noticeably higher

I'm 6'2" and have tried both longer and shorter boards. Don't notice any difference in the height of the pop but I can for sure pop a shorter board more quickly than a longer board. Also people can be cool or not cool regardless of how tall they are.
All you got is today, get out and skate.

I'm 5'6 and definitely skate a lot better on decks with short wheelbases, for sure. Once I realized that, it became a bigger factor in my choices of decks than board width.

Magenta makes two different types of 8.125's, one with a short wheelbase and one with a long wheelbase. Every time I order I always triple check that I'm not getting the long ones by accident. That's happened to me before and I can't skate those for shit, I lose my marks on the control of so many flip tricks with a rotation, and grinds and slides feel different. I'm sure the taller you are the less different wheelbases can be felt, but standing with short legs on a long board feels unpractical like things are disproportionate.
