Chronic Pain
« on: January 16, 2020, 03:00:17 AM »
I've been experiencing lower back pain on and off for a while now. My doctor said she wants to test me for sciatica but if anyone has tips for dealing with chronic pain, that would be great. So far I've taken every type of over the counter drug, muscle relaxers, ibuprofen injection, topical ibuprofen, cbd massage, ice packs, seen a chiropractor and doctor, done stretches, and even took kratom thinking it might help. Been stuck in bed for about 4 days since it hurts to walk. Seriously feels like someones stabbing my spine. Any recommendations for pain or any time wasters that I can do from home (in bed), really anything, would be great because my cabin fever is pretty bad at this point. Anyone have luck with unconventional pain stuff? I'm pretty much down to try anything (outside of hard drugs) to manage the pain.

Never been to an osteophat but tom knox seems stoked.

Also, i kniw you said you tried stretches but a friend of mine had bad back pains and now stretches every morning/night by hanging from a horizontal bar, which llhelped a ton (he does have to keep doing it).

My homie swears stretching out in pigeon pose (IIRC) has helped his messed up sciatic nerve.

I’ve had sciatica for a couple years now, stretching is key, if you can swing it a physiotherapist does wonders but it’s constant upkeep if it’s bad enough

working your core can help, helps with posture and not favouring the side you get the pain running down.

Can't help you with the pain you're feeling now, but generally bridges, superman stretches, and bicycle crunches helped me. But yeah, you have to keep doing them.

How about some yoga stretches. I have really bad body tensions. Like my muscles always feels stiff. And my back always aches from my shitty chair at work.

This summer I got like 2 months where I sat in a private office undisturbed and just did stretches and pushups and squats the whole time lol. I did yoga type stretches not a straight up yoga routine but my body felt totally different. No aches or pains. Everything felt loose it was really weird. I wish I could stay on it but I get lazy and my studio is so small I would have to move shit to stretch. You want a firm flat surface. It doesn’t work for me trying to stretch in bed.

*To clarify. I was supposed to be doing a computer based training in a private office but all I did was post on slap, draw, watch skate videos and do workouts. It’s probably a big reason why I don’t know how to do what they were training me to do.

I used to have the same shit for a couple years. There was times when I was literally just laying on the floor for a couple days straight because it hurt too much to walk or sit. Sneezing would always feel like someone stabbed me in the spine and my legs would almost give out. Started going to the gym, working on my core and stretching a lot, and got myself one of those massage rollers which I can't recommend enough (fixed my knee too). Took about 6 months to a year of pretty consistent work, but it's been good ever since.

Also before that I was basically just laying on the couch/sitting in school, or skating, so pretty much going back and forth from one extreme to the other. Feel like being more active overall and focusing on having a good posture in all situations helped a lot too.

Tried some mild painkillers, but those would only help a bit, and then it would be much worse the next day. Drugs and other types of pain management is the last resort if nothing else works imo, as those won't do anything for the actual problem.

I hope you don't have arthritis, sciatica and arthritis pain have similar symptoms. Osteoarthritis is more common than sciatica. I got diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis ten months ago, bone on bone. Skating is impossible, walking feels like I'm getting stabbed from inside my joints, going up and down stairs is torture. There's no cure for it. I'll probably never be able to skate again, it's really hard to deal with emotionally.

Just take it easy. If you have good health insurance or the money get an MRI done. I wish I had. My first doctor diagnosed me with tendonitis despite not doing an x-ray or MRI. He prescribed a physical therapist who had me doing weighted incline squats, which is the worst thing for arthritis. It backfired and further ruined my knees. The only thing I can do now without pain is riding my bike and swimming. Be sceptical of a diagnosis done without imaging.

Isn't it possible to fix that with surgery?

Ive been back and forth to the doctors for a while now due to chronic pain in my right testicle... Shit sucks... Apparently its something truck drivers get or people who sit around all day... I'm a video editor so thats what I got it from... Ran all sorts of tests and its just chronic inflammation of my epididymis or something like that, no stretching or anything helps... So they have me living off 500 mg of Naproxen... I wish it was something I could stretch out or something... It hasn't really fucked with my skating too much... Other than being too afraid to do nollie heels anymore... Those have a history of shooting right up and credit carding the shit out of me.

damn, bud, i wouldn't wish that shit on anyone.

Look up psoas nerve flossing or nerve glides. Compression and inflammation in the psoas and periformus create ungodly and barely manageable pain. there's stuff that eventually you can do for this, but it takes time and periods of intense effort/constant awareness of how you're using the body.

the psoas is a huge, deep muscle that starts on the upper low spine, wraps around the hip and connects at the bottom of the pelvis. When it's tight or overstretched, it's gonna twist the rest of your body in a direction that's not neutral.

I've been working with this issue of sciatica/psoas related pain for a couple years now and i learned a few things that help reduce pain

-nerve glides
-proper footwear (laugh away, but crocs are incredibly supportive and seem to allow for an anatomically neutral yet still lightly supported foot). I bought a pair of classic new balance last week, after not having worn sneakers for a year or so, 6 hours in I was limping...
-restorative yoga
-massage
-oh yeah, I couldn't do it when pain was peaking, but hiking, or really just walking up stairs or steep grades strengthens and stretches. made a huge difference for me
Well-defined ambiguity, I'm already on somebody's list as a casualty

Get in the pool and swim daily if possible. Stretch lots, especially in a nice hot shower or sauna.

I beat sciatica but I worked my ass of for about 8 months to do so.

No lingering damage other than some dead nerves in the right quad. If i stand in one place too long it feels like someones putting out a cigarette on my leg.

Honestly I have no idea. I've seen two different doctors and a chiropractor (although it was The Joint, which is like the fast food/joke of chiropractors) and they literally don't do anything. Both doctors just told me to take ibuprofen and one said "maybe you have sciatica" and then didn't explain anything or try to find out? Literally getting billed to get no information whatsoever. It's really frustrating. Really appreciate everyone on here, got a lot of good info that I want to try. I definitely have been stretching more but it's not something I think of a lot until the pain comes back, which is stupid.
This was seriously more helpful than the dumbass doctors i've been seeing.

Also, puffinmuffin I'm sorry you're going through that, i know it must be hard. Once a skater, always a skater. You're still fam here no matter the abilities of your body. Nothing but support.

Do yourself a favor and see a physical therapist and have them look at you.
Don't listen to somebody else on how they addressed their own issues.  Symptoms may sound the same but chances are treatment isn't going to be the same.

Also, don't be fooled by words like arthritis, degeneration, etc. etc.  They're just words to describe normal tissue changes and don't always reflect your level of pain.  Listen to your body and work with your therapist to find things that work for you.  Chronic pain is more complex than just "stretching, strengthening your core, work on your posture, etc."  because studies are showing more and more than they have very little correlation with pain level.

Well, ive been video editing for a job since I was about 22... I'm 31 now... That's a lot of time sitting down... The pain started when I was about 27 I think... Went to a few doctors and they didn't know shit... Even got two sonograms done... Couldn't find anything... The pain would come and go but it was always a little sensitive no matter what... Right before Christmas I was editing like 10 - 11 hours a day and I guess that made it way worse... I couldn't even sleep some nights because of the pain... That's when I was finally told by a specialist about what it could be... Nothing they can really do, at least thats what he said... Just take 500 mg of Naproxen when it hurts... Don't sit or stand too long and try to make sure your balls are up on your lap or something when I sit... I didn't quite get that last one but Im willing to try anything...

I've tried... Editing while standing sucks... I don't know how people do it... My buddy has one that goes from standing to siting... Thinking about investing in that... The damage is already done unfortunately... The doctor also said a standing desk might not be the best answer because any which way for too long isn't really a good thing... Sitting or standing that is... I was essentially told, if you sit for long hours... Every 30 minutes or so walk around for a minute, stretch a little... Also, while sitting try to keep your balls up... Which is strange and annoying but if it works it works... And don't wear underwear that is too loose or too tight... Also, funny enough, there is a pretty good spot at my urologists office... Not sure if its a good idea to skate it or not...

What about getting a little treadmill?

I give you props. I do geospatial analysis as a side hustle and can’t be in a chair for more than half an hour. I usually end up standing and hunched over. Granted my 9-5 is as a natural resource technician and I don’t have indoors hours ever. Maybe your body will adapt if you give it a try for a year or so?

I have another friend who edits on a treadmill! He actually just suggested it to me the like two days ago... Also damn dude, those both seem like pretty rad jobs... I fucking edit the behind the scenes features for straight to dvd sequels... Its fucked... Like Grand Daddy Daycare, Backdraft 2... I think I got Jarhead 4 coming up next... I broke my balls for Grand Daddy Daycare... It sucks.

Have they tried Neurontin on you it's also called Gabapentin. That would narrow down your possible pain issues.
I was on it for nerve damage but i quit.

Do not take more than your supposed to people using to get high they call them Johnny's im not going to say why but

Like lsd there's a ceiling on how much can bond to the receptors.
I saw gage eat 75 of them. $1 a piece and boom he ate them all.

We walked and he chewed them all with no fucking drink

Gage is a mad man.

I still live with the pain today it took like 10 years but im ok with having a line of pain from my back to my knee.

Its mostly numb but if I touch my outside thigh it feels like broken glass is sewn under my skin.

couldnt justify starting a new thread since this one had some great stuff. first off, OP, sorry you are or were dealing with that. i hope you are feeling better now. i would love to hear any insights/advice.

bear with me and only read the below if you are bored or have a while - im going to be annoyingly long with this one haha.

i have been dealing with chronic pain for like 5 months and wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy. starting around november i have been absolutely miserable and consumed by pain unless the distractions were helping (those being weed and alcohol). when things are the best, it feels like i was stuck in the back seat of a small car for 4 hours on a road trip type pain. other times i could literally cry from the pain. i'd say its somewhere in between those at all times, and leans more toward the latter. its weird how a somewhat dull pain can actually be an insane pain at the same time after a while.

started with an upper shoulder blade and rotator cuff thing that would progress to neck pain thats always bugged me off and on but then it just got unbearable. i was getting migraines, felt like i had clogged ears, couldnt think straight. went to the doc around thanksgiving and got a doc who specialised in orthopaedic stuff, so i've felt very well taken care of. i prob have not been to the doc since i was in high school and im in my mid 30s. this shit has had me at the doc/PT at least 10 times since thanksgiving and i am basically going at least once a week to somebody.

the xrays showed arthritis everywhere in neck/shoulders and then degenerative discs in c5/c6 of my neck, which means they were basically touching. also diagnosed with carpal tunnel and de quervain's tenosynovitis and a sprained rotator cuff. doc said he's confident that its a structural thing and we can fix it. he did OMT every couple weeks, saying that all my muscles have been doing the wrong thing to try to help me from feeling the pain i should be from whatever nerves are pinched from the disc thing. i think it would help but it was not significant. after a few months, i do feel like it helped my neck/shoulders from being rock hard. the PT was doing dry needling a few times which again, maybe it helped but at this point ive lost a gauge on pain.

the doc put me on a few diff things (welbutrin?) and then most recently pregabalin. the pregabalin seemed like a game changer and ive been taking a lot of walks with the dog and able to live a little without being consumed by the pain. im also taking some prescription anti-inflammatory (been doing that a couple months, would not say i can feel a difference).

the interesting thing is that all the docs seem like they immediately know where to go when i explain it all, whether it be the dry needling or OMT. i felt pretty stoked that they must know how to fix this. but at this point im at my wits end because it hasnt really resolved the issues. i have random bruises at all times because i catch myself subconsciously pressing into my arm or thigh because it might relieve the pain in my hip or neck (im learning that bodies are nuts).

im still dealing with this shit even when it starts getting better. if its not my neck/shoulders, its my hip flexors or entire left side, like sciatica. it feels like every part of my body is trying to hold up a different part at a different time based on which muscles have gotten the most rest from their last shift.

i treated my body like shit jumping down stairs for 20 years but this cant be normal. im going to a couple new docs on monday to see what they think but so far everyone just says something different. its starting to become wildly depressing and frustrating to have an invisible injury that won't get better. its a mind fuck on so many levels.

most of this was to just get this shit off my chest. i had today off work and laid on the floor for about 4 hours with the home screen on youtube still pulled up because all i could do was lay there and try moving into different positions to get the pain off one area (it would move to another eventually). i wasnt having a good time lol.

i dont want to do any opiates and would much rather solve the issue vs masking it with medication. aside from venting, i also was curious to hear if anyone else has ever experienced something similar or heard of anyone who did.

some days im good with saying "yea its a pinched nerve in your neck and carpal tunnel and sciatica" and other days im like "convenient that those all showed up out of nowhere at once, the week after you had covid that included the craziest muscle cramping of your life". then i worry i have parkinsons or MS. feels weird to even consider but michael j fox was younger than me when get was diagnosed.

i feel kind of crazy, this shit sucks. but doing this helped so thanks for reading. any insights/advice is appreciated.

:)

edit: i forgot to mention the pins and needles in my arms and hands, the muscle spasms in my neck, and that i am actively trying to stretch/take 10 min walks a couple times each day to make sure i dont just turn into a potato. if this is anyone's field of expertise i am very willing to pay for advice or a telehealth type zoom meeting.

if you own a bathtub, I suggest doing some epsom salt soaks. once in the morning, and once before bed. magnesium sulfate of any kind is your friend right now.

hey OP, first up don't lose heart. Last year around this time I was worried I wouldn't be able to sit or walk ( not to speak of skate) properly ever again because of sciatica/lower back pain. Had been seeing a chiropractor and various physiotherapists for years, mitigated the pain for short periods of time but didn't change anything fundamental. Judging by the pain and what several doctors had said I was convinced it was a nerve issue and I was fucked forever.

Now I'm largely fine. What happened in the meantime is that I was introduced to a different physiotherapist who actually knew what she was doing. Don't know what your problem is but mine was chronically hardened muscles mainly in the calves, thighs and hips. All the therapist did was (excruciatingly painful) massages and assisted stretching, again focusing on the legs. Taught me to stretch, especially the hamstrings, even though I was scared as hell because it felt like I was about to become paralyzed.

Took about one month to sort out the worst of it. I've been largely pain free for about 10 months, can skate and sit for hours and have started running marathons. Since then I see the therapist once a week for upkeep and spend about an hour every day stretching and doing various body-weight, yoga-type exercises. Time well spent.

Main point being: However bad it feels right now does not mean that you're done. Not at all. I don't know what the solution will be for you but I'm positive that there is one.

PM me if you want and I can send you some videos with stretches etc which  I have used. Keep your head up!

Been dealing with chronic pain in my lower back/right hip & leg for the past 3 years now. Haven’t been to a doctor because I have no insurance and the American healthcare system is fucked.
Went from being unable to bend my knee to skating again after tons of trial and error. My biggest words of advice, as others have stated, is to stretch as much as possible and strengthen your core. But, I also started doing squats with a lightweight kettlebell once the pain became manageable enough to not put me on my ass as soon as I went to squat.
I know we, as older skateboarders, view working out and all that as wack for the most part, but it’s something we have to do if we want to keep skating in our later years. I hope you can figure out what works best for your situation. I wouldn’t wish that kind of pain on anyone.

Op, I feel your pain. I’ve had a fucked up back for years now. Here are a few pointers that could help. Best to seek pro advice though.

- Quit drinking any kind of soda or fizzy. Coke is obviously the worst. There’s acids in there (even sparkling water) that your body needs to deal with one way or another and generally over consumption will lead to inflammation.

- Try taking curcumin supplements. It’s a natural anti inflammatory.

- stretch but also strengthen your core and back muscles. It really doesn’t have to be with eights or intense. Start slowly with some basic breathing reps and gentle mobility exercises then work up.

- try and keep moving as you normally should. Once that pain kicks in accompanied by the fear of pain kicking in, you’ll find yourself moving in unnatural ways which only really make things worse.

Good luck and don’t give up on yourself!

I've learned a ton about my pain recently. It's a lotta to do with my diet.

The less I eat the more the pain grows.
